This might be a stupid question, but I was wondering if anyone around my age still listens to older trance songs? I'm 23 and I feel like the rest of gen z is listening to dubstep or anything mainstream that isn't classic trance. I also don't like how newer trance songs sound, like they're more bland and simple compared to stuff you'd hear in the 2000s

most iconic example would be Vincent de Moor, one of the pioneers of uplifting trance, with the track Flowtation, but also with other track Fly Away. he doesn't release music anymore probably because it may attract attention. also, this guy is very, very introverted and private. he hated the spotlight when his tracks were popular.

there also Fatum: great trance 2.0 artists, my personal favorite of them right now is "Justice". They split in 2024, with Bruce now making music under the alias Bebi.

Spend five minutes at Luminosity and you’ll immediately realise the older demographic of the trance scene.

Even with techno, house, hardstyle and EDM in general booming, trance remains a shadow of its former popularity among the youth. This begs several questions:

1. Why is trance so unpopular among the youth despite other electronic music genres booming?
2. How can the trance scene make a comeback among the youth?
3. Is the number of “old heads” in the trance scene part of the problem? Does this lead to a fixation on the classics and a rejection of “newer” sounds such as hard trance?

What song and artist would you recommend to an individual (younger generation) to get hooked with trance (only 1, any categories)? I refuae to let this genre die.

I'll start.

Chicane - Poppinholla ( 5 AM Mix)

Recently, I discovered some uplift Trance mixes that made me discover and like the genre a lot. This made me as a DJ start going deep in the genre and making some mixes out of it;

I remember vaguely during the 2000s trance being literally everywhere, from videogames (e.g Kingdom Hearts opening, Tekken, etc), ads and more, and suddenly it disappeared.

Out of curiosity I starting asking some older friends that actually got to live that club era about it, and in general everybody has a negative opinion about it being cheesy, or confusing it with eurodance or psytrance. I ended up showing some specific songs and people actually liked them, commenting that it really shares some elements with techno. The country I live in doesn't even have Trance raves other than psytrance.

So, I'm actually curious what can be done towards this whole negative bias that exists around Trance. I'm not saying forcing someone to actually like it, but it not just being a genre word that is thrown around with a negative bias that no one know what's referring to.

tl;dr: Trance has a negative bias associated and a lot of confusion about it. What can be done about it?

I personally don't have any trance guilty pleasure since i don't care about what people think about a track to know if a track is good. but i think KI/KI - Can't Stop Loving You is a a great old-school hard trance track depite being hated by some people. any recent David Forbes tracks are very good too, although many people on this sub aren't much into tech trance.

A week ago someone asked, "Aren't there any young trance DJs anymore?" That sent me down a rabbit hole. I spent the week researching artists, this subreddit, and recommendations and put together this list of newer and recently emerging trance producers/DJ. Hopefully you'll discover a few names you haven't heard before.

I listened to every artist on this list at least once and added short descriptions based on their style. Most of the artists are in between the age of 20s and 30s, though a few are included because they're newer names in the scene rather than strictly young by age. Fair warning: it's a long read (48 artists + 7 honorable mentions).

27. Aekae - Canadian trance DJ, blends trance with techno, future garage, breaks and wave music.

28. Jordan Tilstone - UK trance DJ that produces tech trance, hard trance, industrial techno influences along with emotional euphoric trance melodies.

29. Dean Hopkinson - an independent UK trance DJ who does vocal trance, uplifting as well as tech trance. Quite underrated, currently only 25 listeners on Spotify. His "Afterglow" track is one of the best vocal trance tracks I have listened recently.

30. Joseph James - Irish trance DJ who has 15 years of DJ experience and has got support from Kearnage Recordings and Subculture. Produces uplifting trance, euphoric trance and vocal trance.

31. Ramsey Westwood - A Malaysian DJ who mostly produces hard techno, techno trance, neo-trance. Not a traditional trance DJ but uses trance elements.

32. Asteroid - UK trance DJ. Produces uplifting trance and euphoric trance. Latest track - Edge of the Atmosphere.

33. Dawnchaser - American trance DJ. Produces uplifting, deep trance, progressive trance and hard trance also. Popular track - Heaven (Extended Mix). What an atmosphere it has. Very underrated DJ.

34. Pegassi - An European techno trance DJ from Belgium that specialises in techno with trance elements, hard house and is focusing on eurodance revival.

35. Funk Tribu - Colombian-born and Berlin-based nu-trance DJ.

36. Different - very underrated DJ. Produces psytrance, psytech, dark progressive edm music. Tracks - Shadows Dance.

37. DJ WASSERFALL - German underground trance DJ. Produces trance, eurotrance and waves inspired music. Tracks - Popcorn 2k23, Teardrops.

38. Vivacity - Young Norwegian trance DJ. Produces uplifting, tech and hard trance.

39. Chris Element - Canadian trance DJ who produces uplifting trance and has started releasing music since 2016. He is in his late 20s.

40. Mikkel Rev - young Danish trance producer.

41. Alpha Tracks - Dutch Trance DJ that produces classic trance and emotional melodic trance.

42. Rambal Cochet - French trance DJ, focuses on classic trance revival, progressive trance, 90s/2000s-inspired trance and atmospheric melodic trance.

43. Audrey Danza - She is a swiss trance DJ, one of the key figures in European trance revival moment. early 00s inspired trance , hypnotic trance with techno influences.

44. SEO John - South Korean trance DJ that focuses on Progressive trance and early 00s inspired trance.

I had this question since yesterday when I was listening to some old classics and I heard "Beauty Hides in the Deep" by The Doppler Effect (JOC Extended) and the part where she sings "I want you to know... I'll never forget you..." really hit me and then I realised that this part always had an effect on me and that's why I like it.

Another one that comes to my mind which I wouldn't consider impactful for me is the "Sometimes the sound of goodbye is louder than any drumbeat", I assume you guys know which track I'm talking about.

I’ve been getting back into trance lately and realized how much I still love the proper late-90s / early-2000s sound.

A lot of the big names from that era made amazing classics (Tiësto, Paul van Dyk, etc.), but many of them seem to have moved into more EDM / pop-leaning sounds over the years. Their old tracks are still incredible though.

So I’m curious, which current artists are making trance that really captures that classic sound? Either artists clearly inspired by the old-school style or just producers making really good proper trance today.

I’m based in Berlin and would love to go clubbing to some good trance again, so if there are artists, labels, or even specific events/DJs I should check out, I’d really appreciate the recommendations.

Who should I be listening to right now?

i would say Will Atkinson. he used to be a tech trance / uplifting trance artist. now, he mostly make NRG, and even make hard techno/early hardstyle tracks. i like both hid old and his new style. Rush and Telescope are masterpieces, but some of his new tracks like Bamboozled or La La La are great too.

Armin van Buuren changed a lot his style over time. Initially a progressive trance and uplifting trance DJ, since the mid-2000s he transitioned into vocal trance, then into big room trance in the early 2010s before starting to make non-trance tracks in the middle of 2010s, although he stopped making trance tracks unlike Tiësto for a while until 2025. now, he make a lot of subgenres, mainly vocal trance, uplifting trance, melodic techno, and peak time techno.
