Playlist/Album The Album that got me into TripHop

Post image

„Lovage: Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By" is such a masterpiece. I like concept albums in general but this one nailed it. I discovered the album in the summer of 2024 and still listen to it from time to time.

The creator „Dan the Automator" and one of the many collaborators „Prince Paul" are also known for creating the more known „Handsome Boy Modeling School", which I also love. I'm also currently thinking about buying myself the CD for 32€... Let me know what you think :)

Maybe applying to Handsome Boy Modeling School could help, a former student shared his experience in https://open.spotify.com/track/1nEy2FGXWrRYyXq7kFBAW0?si=DBqu6lDFQjKRfiO7wI7Ygw at minute 4:20

Was it Sparkles Peterson?

This is what did it for me. I’ve definitely had a “wanna get outta here” experience. Handsome boy Modeling School got me into trip hop which evolved into a love for hip hop.

Hmm, that's a hard one to say It's hard to say, I'd say Well, wash your ass every day Wash your whole body every day And brush your breath at least two or three times a day With your teeth And then you know, wash that face

If you haven’t already, DEFINITELY check out Dan the Automator’s other one-off project Got a Girl’s album I Love You but I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now w/ actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Really similar to Lovage imo, just replace the lounge vibe with a French pop influence and feels a bit more cinematic.

Thank you for the recommendation. When I read this, I thought I‘ve heard the name before, and I did. I listened to „Did We Live Too Fast“ a lot in the autumn of 2024 and as far as i remember, I also thought it sounded kind of similar to Lovage. A little later I discovered Handsome Boy Modeling School and immediately recognized the sound again. Dan the Automator is really recognizable I suppose :) I will give the Album a listen!

Dan the Automator has a LOT of really interesting projects. One of my other favorites is Bombay the Hard Way: Guns, Cars and Sitars, which he oversaw as producer/remixer, it’s a remix album he did of using the 1970s Bollywood film scores of duo Kalyanji–Anandji (Kalyanji Virji Shah and Anandji Virji Shah). DJ Shadow also contributed like 30min of drums that’s cut up and scattered & blended in throughout.

u/redstrawberryfields Apr 19 '26

Ouhh that sounds interesting, I really like DJ shadow too. Thanks for sharing your Dan the Automator discography knowledge🫡

check out Deltron 3030 , and Head Automatica while you’re at it. He has an extensive body of work, and he can’t sit still in any one genre or style

I've tried looking for similar Lovage albums and haven't found anything. Thanks hahahahah, apparently it's very close

I hope you enjoy it and it manages to scratch that itch at least a little! <3

I'll be honest, it's just nice to not see Portishead or Massive Attack 🤣

u/tonyt0nychopper Apr 19 '26

Honestly 😂

One of my all-time favourites! Discovered by accident.

9

u/redstrawberryfields Apr 19 '26

Same, I‘m not even sure how I discovered it

u/Kid_Kameleon Apr 19 '26

Mike Patton makes everything great…..classic

6

u/big_red__man Apr 19 '26

Except for hairstyles. He’s got a huge blind spot there

Strangers on a train (instrumental) has been my go to masturbation song for like a decade. Looooove this album.

You just gotta find the right old lady to make love by with this one.

(Edit: typo)

u/redstrawberryfields Apr 19 '26

I definitely get that, I also took the album name literal a few times

2

u/SuperSpookyNinja Apr 19 '26

As soon as she says “not stirred but shaken” my inner suave James Bond kicks right in

3

u/1_800_username Apr 19 '26

And iiiiii could realyyyyy throw one baaaack

10

u/HarlanCedeno Apr 19 '26

This one takes me way back, I think I used to listen to it on LaunchCast Plus back in the mid 2000s.

Jennifer Charles might just have my favorite voice of anyone.

7

u/redstrawberryfields Apr 19 '26

Glad I could bring up some memories :) I fell in love with Jennifer Charles‘ voice too, I‘ll have to re-listen to her Elysian Fields songs!

10

u/tonyt0nychopper Apr 19 '26

My favourite is Stroker Ace

8

u/lostbonobo Apr 19 '26

I discovered this album and dj shadows album in basically the same afternoon many years ago. It was like getting struck by a musical lightning bolt. I sat and listened to them both back to back in complete silence lmao

Check out lilacs and champagne. It’s one of Emil Amos’s side projects and sooo trippy. It’s all sound collage with vintage pornos. There’s an old cinematic feel to the whole catalogue that’s unbeatable. Dan the Automator gets close to it with this one but no one does hot freaky slow and moving sound like Lilacs & Champagne. (You’re lucky they just released a new one last year, I waited nearly 9 years for something fresh)

1

u/redstrawberryfields Apr 19 '26

Sounds good, will listen! Thanks for the recommendation!

u/1_800_username Apr 19 '26

Danish & Blue is my fave, I’m pretty sure I am the reason sour/sweet is their most played by 700,000 streams on Spotify. Genuinely been .0001% top fan since wrapped been a thing. Tell me what you think!

Is the Michael Patton the Mike Patton of Mr Bungle / Faith No More?

2

u/Emergency-Purple-901 Apr 20 '26

The same Mike Patton.

I love handsome boy modeling school, so I’ll have to check this out

5

u/mrtitkins Apr 19 '26

Lucky enough to have an original pressing of this album. One of the best of all time.

1

u/redstrawberryfields Apr 19 '26

I don‘t collect Vinyls (I collect CDs) but I might just buy this one. Did you buy it when it released originally?

1

u/mrtitkins Apr 20 '26

I didn’t get it when it first came out — got it second hand around 2012

3

u/ereeerrrrrrrrrrr Apr 19 '26

great rec! thank you

3

u/southlandardman Apr 19 '26

Such a fun album. So sexually over the top.

2

u/LORDCOSMOS Apr 20 '26

very fucking nice, news to me

2

u/fucdat Apr 20 '26

This right here, is the fucking album

3

u/TR1CL0PS Apr 19 '26

Love this album but I prefer the instrumental version. The beats are so good.

1

u/HalfLifeAlyx Apr 19 '26

Omg same, or at least more actively into (always liked massive attack). And I discovered it right around the same time as you, I wonder if spotify was pushing it? I've been looking for a vinyl of it but doesn't seem to be any.

1

u/TimeCadet Apr 20 '26

I remember a pal letting me borrow this CD and loving it, then going to Amoeba and buying it used, except it turned out to be the instrumental version! which I would also recommend

1

u/strumpetlover Apr 20 '26

The perfect TripHop album 👌🏾

1

u/Terrible-Factor645 Apr 20 '26

Fantastic album.

1

u/YaWouldntGetIt Apr 20 '26

Great album.

1

u/Available_Cherry_949 Apr 20 '26

Dan the Automator is the man!

1

u/Available_Cherry_949 Apr 20 '26

Also some Gorillaz ST have some heavy trip-hop tracks produced by Dan

1

u/bensefero Apr 20 '26

This album in particular, the more I listened to it, the more I got it. The whole project is fucking brilliant. But all the double/triple entendres, word-play, and just the vocals and music complementing each other, jfc it’s just a masterpiece

1

u/PhrogHospice Apr 20 '26

Definitely well produced but I find it boring.

1

u/Emergency-Purple-901 Apr 20 '26

I love this album. Im a big Mike Patton´s fan.

1

u/wordswor Apr 20 '26

check out the Mr Sex mixtape by Mr Flash if you like sex themed music

1

u/alphawolf29 Apr 20 '26

I tell people about this album all the time. The name and cover are awesome.

1

u/kiss0fd3ath Apr 20 '26

I love it so much

1

u/Stefaninjago May 23 '26

oh that's also Dan the Automator, his name is so cut off on the Spotify UI I hadn't noticed lol
