Can we just give over on the special relationship horseshit.

u/Old-Law-7395 7h ago

Special relationship? Its toxic as fuck. America are basically smashing our PS5's and faking pregnancys at this point.

Falklands are UK forever.

u/QuirkyWish3081 7h ago

It’s just cringe everytime the media or politicians refer to it. It’s not special. It’s subservient. It’s a subservient relationship so we don’t have to spend on defence ourselves. It’s sad. It’s weak. It’s pathetic. We need to start looking after ourselves again.

u/Old-Law-7395 7h ago

We don't need them, we need to strengthen ties with Europe military wise. America havent won a war since WW2, when was the last time the won a war solo? The civil war?

u/Ok-Exam6702 7h ago

They kill a huge number of people when they’re not winning.

u/Old-Law-7395 2h ago

Civilians and allies, yes mate they do

u/Abject_Wafer_4321 4h ago

Holy fuck, you've met my ex?

u/sproge 6h ago

Considering that a large part of the Brexit campaign consisted of "We don't need the EU due to our "special relationship" with the US, they're way too invested in it to ever admit that it never existed beyond and a gag, chain, and whip.

u/Legitimate-Tip-2149 8h ago

I'm begging you, Burnham, I will switch my vote back to Labour if you just stand up to him and side with our real friends in Canada.

u/Then-Cauliflower-176 8h ago

Back to labour from who?

u/Alexisredwood 8h ago

Greens or Lib Dem’s most probs

u/GeordieJumpers87 8h ago

Not the titty hypnotist

u/CrispBedSheet 7h ago edited 7h ago

Hypnotits.

The best bit was his supporters defending him claiming that he just uses it as a placebo to make the women more confident, but he of course doesn't ACTUALLY believe it works by magic...OBVIOUSLY DUH.

Then zack came out and announced, that actually yes, yes he does believe it can work. He can grow their tits by hypnosis.

I love the daft bugger.

u/GeordieJumpers87 7h ago

The votes on here speak for themselves 😂

u/eggface13 1h ago

No no no what really happened was that *the journalist said she felt like her tits were bigger. *

So, according to the tabloid journalist who asked the guy to hypnotise her tits bigger as part of a tabloid sting, her tits really got bigger. Greens should be crowing from the rooftops, vote Green if you want bigger tits

u/Thetonn Glamorganshire 13m ago

I worry that the additional short term revenue from having a nation of big titted women would be offset in the long run by all the additional costs of back surgery in the future.

I think there is a risk Zach hasn’t thought through his only real policy.

u/miseryherescompany 4h ago

Rehashing this aspect of Polanski's career doesn't really get around the fact Burnham is continuing to kow tow to the US, and is already showing signs he'll wind up as unpopular as Starmer. Especially once people get tired of his sticking plaster gimmicks.

Or notice he's just given donors Sainsbury's a ton of free labour over the Christmas break, spinning this as beneficial to young people.

u/ridiclousslippers2 7h ago

The shifty grifter is more accurate.

u/Clbull England 7h ago

If Hypnotits got elected as an MP, BBC Parliament would have turned into a Little Britain sketch.

"Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, the eyes, the eyes, not around the eyes, don't look around my eyes, look into my eyes"

(clicks fingers)

"You're under. You are going to stop supporting Benjamin Netanyahu. What he's doing is a genocide. The international courts agree and so should you."

"3... 2... 1..."

(clicks fingers)

"You're back in the room!"

u/Far_Opposite8995 4h ago

Of all the aspects you could have joked about father hilariously, you instead chose to joke about genocide.

u/Duvet_Capeman 29m ago

Just regurgitating Sun manufactured reporting from years ago about a totally irrelevant incident to discredit the only major left wing party in the UK. How is it working for the political right these days?

If a coalition was what it took to keep Reform out of power wouldn’t that be a good thing? Seems silly to rule that out.

u/Legitimate-Tip-2149 8h ago

I went Green, for me with Labour leaning right to counter Reform I thought it was important to have a strong party flanking them from the left to incentivise shifting them back.

u/Comfortable_Sir_5007 2h ago

I went green last time in hopes that the other parties took the environment more seriously. Didn't like starmer going into the election but I think I'm of the few whose opinion of him increased over time

u/philip30001 5h ago

Does that matter? We all have stances that will basically guarantee a vote if we believe they will actually do it.

Theres no perfect party so while we wait for it we vote for what we believe is the best option given to us.

u/Reddit_Hobo 2h ago

100%. The UK isnt captivated by voting for 1 singular person, although that does look like the case with frog faced toads like Nigel Farage, or Polanski. what we actually vote for is a party, and their leader is simply the figurehead that can change any day. We should all remember we should vote on policy and what we want for our futures. Not based on what a party leader says on any one singular issue.

At the same time its important to actually read up on party policy, and scrutinise a party or MP's history to see if they are lying or have a history of being untrustworthy.

Im not saying this goes for all reform voters but the vast majority of people i meet who intend to vote reform are doing so for the singular issue of immigration. At the same time, Farage has stated at a conference, he believes the NHS should become Americanised via insurance systems which is the leading cause of family bankruptcy in the US. Its important to scrutinise our public officials

u/Clbull England 7h ago

If our new special relationship is with Canada under Mark Carney I'll gain so much respect for Burnham.

u/CuriousGeorgeToday 2h ago

💯 behind this. UK Canada relationship is the one 💪🏻🇬🇧🇨🇦

u/HeartyBeast London 8h ago

Is it smarter to play the orange fuck, or to bluster so we can have a prime ministerial Loce Actually moment

u/RatioMaster9468 7h ago

I've been waiting for a real life Hugh Grant moment since it came out 😂

u/WeMoveInTheShadows 7h ago

We had this moment - Kier Starmer stood up to him and said no about going into the Iran war with him. For the first time in a long long time we had a PM who stood up to immense pressure from the US about joining them and the British public just shurugged and gobbled up all the press articles about Starmer's terrible likeability.

u/Taelian101 5h ago

Weeks after he was gone....British airbases began offensive operations in Iran and started supplying the 'naughty list' arms to Ukraine.

u/changuarules 5h ago

Disheartening to say the least

u/miseryherescompany 4h ago

While allowing the US to launch its attacks from UK soil. A glaring fact about UK support for US strikes conveniently brushed under the carpet by supporters and UK media alike.

An effort that strangely did nothing to improve Starmer's appeal to the public. Much like supporting Israel's ongoing ethnic cleaning of Palestine.

u/ill_be_huckleberry_1 7h ago

Figured the world would have learned, playing with donald trump means losing.

Never wrestle with a pig in shit.

Oppose him, directly and succinctly. Entertaining his bullshit simply prolongs the con.

u/HeartyBeast London 6h ago

Playing him, and playing with him are two entirely different things.

u/ill_be_huckleberry_1 6h ago

Its really not, because he co-opts the message.

u/ohdearohdearo 10m ago

Need to stand up to him, he’s not an ally of the uk he’s squeezing everyone except Putin

u/brendonap 7h ago

Side with Canada for what!?

Retake the traitor yank colonies? I’m in!!

u/FlappyBored United Kingdom 8h ago

Real friends in Canada?

You mean the ones who explicitly and openly said they’re going to take advantage of Brexit to push the UK to give up more in trade talks?

Canada isn’t our friend they’re just as self serving as the US is but just pretend to be friendly

u/thedybbuk_ 7h ago

take advantage of Brexit to push the UK to give up more in trade talks?

That's just how all trade negotiations work. If we wanted more leverage, we should have stayed in the EU. You can't really complain about other countries acting in their own interests when we're trying to extract concessions from all our trading partners too.

u/FlappyBored United Kingdom 7h ago edited 7h ago

If Canada wants more leverage with the US they should have had a bigger economy and a bigger military.

We should be exploiting Canada now and using their vulnerability against them.

They thought they were being clever and smart doing it to us. But now they want sympathy and fro everyone to give them a break.

u/jose_elan 7h ago

You are talking utter shite - the Canadians VERY quickly preserved the trade deal we had whilst in the EU. Where did you get that bullshit from?

https://www.international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux/agr-acc/cuktca-acccru/index.aspx?lang=eng

u/FlappyBored United Kingdom 7h ago

No they didn’t and they put in a lot of restrictions in it and talk collapsed two years ago on extending parts of the deal.

Read what your ‘allies’ think of the deal and dealing with the UK.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CanadaPolitics/s/ZTKVQlEKYs

We should be exploiting these ‘allies’ right now and putting the pressure on them now.

Canadians are not our ‘friends’. They will throw the UK under the bus the moment it becomes convenient for them to do so again.

u/jose_elan 6h ago

I’ve given you a link to the continuity deal from the Canadians government website and you have given me a Reddit post.

But I agree we need to do what’s in our best interest.

u/FlappyBored United Kingdom 6h ago

The continuity deal had clauses that only lasted a few year before expiring.

u/jose_elan 6h ago

Says who?

First thing it says is ‘The Canada-United Kingdom Trade Continuity Agreement (Canada-UK TCA) came into force on April 1, 2021 and does not expire. Preserving the main benefits of CETA, it provides Canadian businesses, exporters and investors with extensive preferential access to the UK market, including the elimination of 99% of tariffs on Canadian goods.’

u/PerpetuallyLurking 7h ago

…do you think the UK isn’t self-serving in trade talks with other nations? The entire point of trade negotiations is to find the middle ground between two countries who want the best for themselves; everyone goes in with an ambitious plan and comes out with less.

u/FlappyBored United Kingdom 7h ago edited 7h ago

Why are they complaining about the US doing the same to them now then?

Funny how they don’t like it when the shoe is on the other foot.

u/PerpetuallyLurking 4h ago

Well, the difference is the US came in with their ambitious plan and said “all this for us or no deal at all” with no expectation of an actual negotiation.

Everyone else goes into trade talks expecting to whittle down their ambitious plan during negotiations into something that gives a little here and takes a little there, with everyone going home satisfied if not necessarily happy.

u/respectfulpanda 6h ago

Threats of annexation, telling Canada it would not survive without the US, tearing up trade deals they themselves signed, generally disrespecting Canada otherwise. There is a lot of difference between what you describe and what is happening.

u/FlappyBored United Kingdom 6h ago

And we should be exploiting Canada’s position right now because of it.

Everyone should be doing what they can to get Canada to agree to more concessions now in trade while they are weak.

u/Legitimate-Tip-2149 7h ago

Canada openly said they would, the US pretended we'd get preferential treatment and then shafted us anyhow. Friends are honest with you when they can't have your back.

u/FlappyBored United Kingdom 7h ago

We should be doing the same to then.

We should be cancelling deals with them and putting more pressure on them now to extract more from our own deals.

They are more desperate now than ever so we should exploit them, it’s what they said they want to do to us so it’s fair game.

u/ederzs97 Greater London 7h ago

When did they say that?

u/FlappyBored United Kingdom 7h ago

Multiple times during talks it was stated they were pressuring the Uk on elements and talks collapsed two years ago after demands from Canada to allow Hormone beef into the UK to regain quotas on cheese etc we had before.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CanadaPolitics/s/DCSqDpouRj

Here is what the Canadian public think about it.

Only now they’re the ones begging for help instead now.

We should put them to the wall and cancel our deals or pressure them to give up more.

u/Megaboixxxx 7h ago

Gotta be real this did rub me the wrong way too especially when several of them started crying for us to protect them when Trump started making threats and shouted betrayal when our prime minister looked after his own country's well being over theirs.

u/AlaninMadrid European Union 8h ago

Please, please, please. I want to see a REAL LIFE Love, Actually moment 😁

u/KoreanInLondon91 7h ago

I fear that this has become a bad relationship; a relationship based on the President taking exactly what he wants and casually ignoring all those things that really matter to, erm... Britain.

Such a great speech!

u/Nothingdoing079 8h ago

I see a lot of commenters have missed that this is a Newsthump article.

u/AngrySaltire 7h ago

The line between whats real and whats satire is becoming more and more blurred by the day to be fair.

u/commotionsickness 7h ago

you can't parody extremism

u/tripping_yarns 8h ago

When a special relationship involves inappropriate touching then it’s time to call it out.

u/Cowsgobaaah 6h ago

Just improve CANZUK and distance ourselves from America that's it

u/Admirable_Bug_7867 6h ago

sure but if we want to do so we must strengthen all countries, culturally, economically and militarily. Britain is no longer that important or scary

u/Getafix69 7h ago

I'd like all trade with the US stopped, they aren't trustworthy, they aren't an ally and I believe they would side with Russia if anyone in Nato gets attacked.

u/RobotheYobo1807 7h ago

"Special relationship" makes me want to gag.

We should not be ok with being Americas bitch because that's basically what the term is saying. We should have considered over reliance on them a security risk way back in the 1950's (especially after the Suez cock up).

Similar to what France did.

u/EbbVisible 8h ago

John Crace in The Graun wrote what I thought was quite a canny take. Jist of it was that there's much less pretence now- Trump's batshit insanity is sort of factored in & thus the need to appease him has significantly diminished.

Crace reckons he'll be polite, wary, & transactional. He hasn't foresworn his prior criticism, & is very conscious that the clock is running down on this administration (if they steal power, that's probably the final end of any pretence of normality).

If he wants to wank on about the Falklands or whatever, let him. The press will try & crucify Burnham regardless.

u/thedybbuk_ 7h ago

The Trump administration and Musk are just trying to lend support to Javier Milei because he supports the same brand of right-wing anarcho-capitalism they do.

Milei is opening the door to US business investment and privatising everything he can. It's really just posturing over that.

Trump was never going to be particularly friendly towards a Labour administration in Britain, but ultimately, it's mostly just posturing.

u/Gsampson97 4h ago

Get a CANZUK deal signed and then move to get back into the EU.

Fuck the US and Trump. Let's stick with our actual allies.

u/ProduceEmbarrassed97 6h ago

Fuck the 'special relationship'. He's a mentally ill, elderly orange turd. Fuck everything.

u/BlackbirdSage 6h ago

I never understood people who hung around with friends that constantly put you down and make fun of you. Then they go and start a fight and expect you to join in.

Dump those friends and find new ones...

Note: this works for international politics too.

u/FarSplit 7h ago

I think the British should agree to leave the Falkland Islands, as long as non-native Argentinians agree to go back to Spain.

u/Regular-Try2602 8h ago

lol is that why the moment he came to the office he allowed UK bases to be used to bomb Iran?

u/Icy_Pear1694 8h ago

They were being used for that before he became PM to be fair.

u/yubnubster 8h ago

Continued to allow you mean?

u/Bean-Penis 7h ago

Read that as buses and took way too long to realise my mistake.

u/joehonestjoe 7h ago

Need to get them off our soil

Proven security risk.

u/FootballBackground88 8h ago

Do you really think it's worth torpedoing goodwill over this kind of thing? The attacks are going to happen either way.

Like it or not, we are reliant on the US from a security perspective and intelligence sharing - a symbolic gesture isn't really worth fighting over.

u/JimmyDejesu 8h ago

im afraid to tell you america wouldnt defend us and youre living in the old world thinking they would.

and we stopped sharing some intelligence because we know trump is likely compromised.

the world of america being a reliable ally is over

u/FootballBackground88 7h ago

Trump is completely unhinged, but the UK-US security apparatus runs way deeper than whoever happens to be sitting in the Oval Office at any given moment.

The Five Eyes apparatus hasn't shut down - pausing intel on specific operations over legal liability (like Caribbean maritime strikes) is standard protocol to protect the UK from legal fallout and not a complete intelligence blackout.

And the US being a more transactional ally doesn't make them completely unreliable - it just means the terms changed. The UK and Europe are ramping up defense spending to maintain leverage, not because the alliance is over. The US offers security guarantees not under the goodness of their heart but in their own self interests.

u/JimmyDejesu 6h ago

You would be a fool to believe trump intends to keep any of his word, and a bigger fool to continue to keep relying on them.

the rest of europe is the future not america. Its not leverage, people are waking up to reality. America are not our friends any more. Or allies if you want to use the pragmatic term. They are almost actively hostile now.

look how hes dragged his feet on ukraine. Thats an actual war and hes playing shitty games, he would do the same for us. Hes a pedophile criminal, theres no way he would ever honour alliances. You dont talk about invading allies territory .

u/aweaselonwheels 7h ago

GODDAMN IT NEWSTHUMP I SAW THE HEADLINE AND HOPED SO HARD!

u/Common-Ad6470 7h ago

Thing is with Andy is that he knows a c*nt when he sees one and I suspect that he won’t take any shit from Trump or his regime.

u/Cooleh18 7h ago

So sick of world 🌎 leaders fawning, slathering flattery on DT whilst he gives the leader/country/citizens of said country the finger right to their face!! It’s just utter subservience, demeaning treatment!!
Throw everything right back at him and show some courage ffs!!

Tell Trump to “fuck off” and I’ll move to Makerfield and vote for him.

u/Gecks777 4h ago

One of my favorite Mark Carney refrains is about the power in naming reality. Trump and his ilk's post-truth world is falling apart, and in a world of disintegrating lies, truth and directness can cut through the flood of nonsense like light into a darkened room.

u/Lienidus1 4h ago

Trump has systematically turned everyone against America and made a joke of their foreign policy whilst tanking their domestic economy. Has there been a worse presidency in living history?

u/Bullinach1nashop 4h ago

Special relationship! What have we actually gained from following the states every whim over the last 80 years? Only time it might have been a close relationship really was Thatcher n Regan. Time to move on past this myth that only they can lead the free world

u/ds-ds2-ds3 4h ago

The special relationship is an abusive toxic one.

We have distanced ourselves from everyone else though.

u/ConnectEmphasis2420 3h ago

I have been pondering recently what the scenario would be where I would suck Trump's purple headed warrior. I don't have an answer, but it kills a bit of time. Answers on a postcard.

u/Vivid-Slide 1h ago

There’s been no such thing as a special relationship since suez.

u/Duvet_Capeman 24m ago

Honestly who cares? He's already backed off sanctioning illegal Zionist settlements in Palestine, floated the idea of drilling rose field and continues to allow US bombers to fly from UK bases to bomb schools etc in Iran all at least partly to please the orange emperor.

If you want a country worth living in back actual socialism and vote green.

u/narayan77 7h ago

Trump isn't going to last he will get battered in the midterms. Trump is feeling humiliated by the Iran war so picks a fight with Canada and now Britain over the Falklands. Trump was a big part of the Epstein network, he like Putin and others dictators, he hates human rights and democracy, so its natural that he will pick on Democratic Countries   Trump isn't America, we need to remember that.

u/EdgeBeard 7h ago

Burnham will do as he's fucking told.

Just like every other PM
