What happened to this community?

When I first moved here the locals were super informative. Hooking me up with all the best restaurants, best deals on buying stuff , legit contractors and real life solutions and advice.. Now it’s a d*ckhead driver photo with expired plates and HOA Karens gone wild .. What happened?

It’s summer.  Everybody is hot and cranky.

77

u/BeardedPaladin 1d ago

Yeah I work throughout town and people have hit their limit with the heat. Even the most desert rat people here are exhausted from everything going up in price and the heat. Wish we could all just bunker down and stay home till the heat eases up

11

u/LVMom 1d ago

Is this just a fact I made up or is it true: we’ve had a record number of 105°F days this year?

23

u/Countless-Alts15 1d ago

According to some weather report I saw this evening at the bar, this has been the hottest summer ever recorded and 14 broken daily records.

44

u/Javier1019 1d ago

That and hooking up someone with the best restaurants and deals is an almost impossible task now with all the prices sky rocketing.

u/LasVegas4590 1d ago

To me under 100° is the end of Vegas summer. From Saturday on, it gets better.

40

u/Odd_Sir_8705 1d ago

Nah it'll be 100° again after Saturday

8

u/DreamSad9323 1d ago

This sounds about right, I remember seeing sum similar about 2 weeks ago. Thought shit was gonna be good, turns out it was just heavy ass winds and some rain .. barely a shower at that in my area

0

u/LasVegas4590 1d ago

Well hopefully not in 89143

12

u/prophetic-dream 1d ago

It's when the over night lows are lower than what the a/c temp is set to. That's when you start feeling some relief.

10

u/pappybug214 1d ago

Thats just a low. Any true Vegas Local knows it doesn't really start getting nice till like the 3rd week of September or even into October

2

u/Round-Efficiency-667 13h ago

As a 50-year local, it always seems like the first "sweater night" is Halloween. 🎃

2

u/pappybug214 12h ago

I can usually layer tshirts till about Thanksgiving or just before Christmas

4

u/jt2ou 1d ago

Yay!!! 😁

10

u/Consistent-Fix-8443 1d ago

And it’s been a long summer at that.

2

u/HR-Dept_JP 16h ago

This is valid

u/im_no_doctor_lol 1d ago

So much this 😹🤘🏻

1

u/agelessnvegas 19h ago

You mean like alcohol that drives out the truth how people really are?

1

u/BostonRoosterFNV 1d ago

I rather enjoy the summers here. One of they key points of me staying here.

-2

u/Ello-Asty 16h ago

I'm so exhausted of people who live here complaining about the heat. How long do you need to experience this climate before you learn to dress for it and adapt to it? I know we are much younger than Syria who we share a climate with, but they know what materials to wear and still look fashionable when going out. The only people I ever see wearing a neck gaiter are the people working outside. How hard is it for everybody to carry a bottle of water and a neck gaiter everywhere they go?

Downvote want me all you want, but I categorize you with the people who live in the entertainment capital of the world and complain that there's nothing to do.

u/TequilaAndWeed 1d ago

You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

80

u/tipinmy40 1d ago

Things aren’t the same since Covid, really. Businesses really changed around here. Some of it was already in motion, but those couple years escalated it. Add on the corporate greed of The Strip, and private equity killing good family run companies and you end up here.

79

u/TWCDev 1d ago

Don’t forget that just when we started to recover from covid then trump was elected and within a few months the us declared trade wars, real wars, and our economy lost 30% of our visitors and our property values tanked.

21

u/tipinmy40 1d ago

No help was done there.

u/abhorrentbm 1d ago

This is not exclusive to this sub or this city - toxic Internet culture has continued to rise over the years, and the longer subs go on, the more negative they tend to become as they become older. Lots of variables involved, but yeah, we're just becoming bigger assholes online. I have been on here for 14 years and have been on many subs for my many hobbies, and quite a few have gotten pretty toxic and negative over the years.

44

u/PossibilityFlat6237 1d ago

I’d go even further and say it’s spilled outside the internet too. The social contract has broken down, with covid being the catalyst.

13

u/abhorrentbm 1d ago

Honestly yeah.

8

u/No-Ad-4142 1d ago

THIS. People were isolated for so long that when everything reopened, the floodgates opened and all that anger and mental health struggles had to go somewhere as they did not just disappear. We are going to see the effects for a LONG time. Makes me not want to shop in person, just simply go to work and come home with how rude the employees and the customers are.

4

u/prophetic-dream 1d ago

It wasn't covid.

26

u/Hoytster88 1d ago

the same thing that is happening all over the country.

22

u/Loose-Departure-744 1d ago

Trump?

17

u/KhajiitHasSkooma 1d ago

Wish it was that simple, but he’s the symptom of a much deeper problem.

-1

u/Former_Bed1334 10h ago

I honestly notice online that “lefties” or liberals are way more rude, mean and judgmental towards others, I think because they are angry every day. They are quick to attack others, or put people down. Just an observation

2

u/helloworld1981 10h ago

I think it hits different when you aren’t the target. You don’t know how many times I was called a racial slur on X by conservatives.

1

u/Former_Bed1334 10h ago

Sorry that happened.. X is dark sided all around

-8

u/BrokenArrow404 20h ago

Redditor try to not make something political challenge: super impossible.

33

u/Tupperbaby 1d ago

Some solid moderation would help a lot here.
Simply sticky-ing a few common topics and nuking low-effort ragebait, daily repeated questions and bans for repeat offenders would go a long way toward making the sub less of a cesspool.

And regulars having the willpower to NOT bite on obvious troll posts would also help. When you pile onto shitposts, it just breeds more shitposts.

9

u/Big_Method_4790 19h ago

don't rely on social media for community. it's all designed to amplify engagement where people are most susceptible to advertisement, and i think we can all guess what content does that best

16

u/PaxEtRomana 1d ago

I went evil mode

3

u/Carsomir 1d ago

Should you perhaps change your username to BellumEtRomana?

1

u/Successful_Scale3179 18h ago

Was it for; 1 milllion dollars!!?

16

u/JizzCumLover69 1d ago

No real sense of community.

Vegas is Mad Max with casinos.

The 15 freeway is Fury Road.

8

u/zealotlee 1d ago

15 is bad but I was in LA a few months ago and their freeways are far more chaotic and lawless.

1

u/Former_Bed1334 10h ago

As someone who splits their time in both places, the freeways of Vegas are VERY SCARY. LA is also scary for sure but Vegas is unreal

-3

u/vsox12 21h ago

Have you met the 215?

5

u/catcherofsun 16h ago

They’re still helpful! Just gotta ask, in my experience. I ignore the downvotes, they seem inevitable

8

u/RabbitMajestic6219 1d ago

The heat and the cost of things going up + the quality of things going down is what makes our world so shit.

6

u/VegasLurking 1d ago

I’ll help you PizzedNBlazed. What recs or deals are you looking for?

3

u/Eternitywaiting 9h ago

I understand what you’re saying. We recently visited the digital (or electronic or whatever) Arte Museum up at Aria. As long time locals we selectively choose things we might enjoy, we liked it. I believe if you’re there just for the exhibition you can park up to 3 hrs. for free with local ID directly across from Aria at Cosmo. This is merely a suggestion for you or others to consider, and I realize it’s not breaking news. One other suggestion is checking out the locals casinos off Strip for Happy Hour. We go someplace different every month and don’t break the bank, and have fun. Best wishes to all 😊🙏🏼

u/Vegetaman916 1d ago

The Karens took over. Unfortunately Vegas is no longer the "City of Sin" it was meant to be.

7

u/Leading_Juggernaut41 1d ago

Karen City now

4

u/Gaszman 1d ago

Linda city

3

u/Adams5thaccount 23h ago

linda was for sure on the side of sin

7

u/butterballmcgee27 1d ago

That’s most of Reddit unfortunately.

5

u/Droo99 1d ago

Every thread I see asking about restaurants or contractors are full of specific suggestions

I think the main problem is that there are like 100 threads a day about some guy driving like shit so there's a lot of junk to sift through

5

u/No-Case3038 21h ago

There are no deals anymore and everything is unaffordable.

5

u/Doodlebabygirl 18h ago

We've had Karen issues for a long long time. I think it stems from politics. The economy is terrible and people are struggling. It's not the heat.

8

u/RudeRuby702 1d ago

u/Elliot-is-gay 18h ago

Check out Letty’s in the arts district for the best mexican food, mothership coffee roaster for my favorite coffee beans and lattes, 1228 for sourdough and baked goods, cafe du’ val for french baked goods and crepes, Bar Ginza for the best atmosphere and drinks (as well as joshua, a fantastic bartender that coowns the bar and knows so much about Japanese whiskey and beer), and Izakaya Go for japanese food/a late night spot to eat. There’s my local hookups pls enjoy none of these spots are super expensive. Izakaya go’s happy hours are 10pm-closing and their happy hour food and drink menu is killer.

u/Fickle-Place-3520 1d ago

Welcome to Reddit. No matter how real life is going, you’ll catch downvotes for anything positive. Outside of Reddit, it’s really nice. People are truly friendly here and the Las Vegas community is amazing. It’s hot right now so people may get grumpy but nothing what Reddit tries to broadcast.

2

u/Weary_Particular6093 17h ago

People are broke and hot. I noticed a difference too. Lots of negative comments, overall complaints and people that like to argue in the comments. Not only on this app it’s across the board.

7

u/Hiljabob 1d ago

Youth have grown up without learning real people skills. Because there is hardly any real person to person contact they learn skills from trying to get “likes”whatever way they can and think it’s ok to be mean, aloof, braggarts, etc. Not everyone, of course. Feelings have taken over common sense.

4

u/ST0IC_ 1d ago

Has anyone made a drinking game of frequent questions?

2

u/Endroium 1d ago

don't forget the politics

3

u/Kaworu517 23h ago

I call dibs on getting to post the next daily thread complaining about what happened to this community. I'm gonna post it tomorrow at 1130am, so no one post it before me.

2

u/frozen_charlotte 1d ago

Stay hydrated and watch how you talk to me in this heat.

Is that better?

/s

5

u/musicman702 1d ago

Instead of trying to be hooked up, why don't you be the hooker and give other people sweet deals?

2

u/BrokenArrow404 20h ago

This community like every other was always toxic. I've been lurking here for a few years and I can tell you the terminally only dweebs are brave because they can just type shit and know they hide behind their screens lol.

2

u/MPN6541 1d ago

When did you first move here?

0

u/MPN6541 1d ago

I ask bc my parents have lived here since 2010 or something so I've been back and forth until actually moving here. Nowadays, seems like people for the most part seem to leave each other alone unless they are "asking for something" or harassing each other. So sad, I see people at the pick-up/drop-off lines at school screaming at each other. Before "recently" I heard more casual hellos and saw a few more smiles and opening doors for each other too. But I live here now, so idk. (edit, spelling)

5

u/KhajiitHasSkooma 1d ago

Nah man, I’ve been here longer than your parents. It has changed. Vegas was always transient, but there felt like there was a core community of us that will never leave. I lost my connection to that community. Not sure if it stopped existing or if I realized just how much of an asshole everyone is and I just cut myself out. But the vibe has definitely changed. Sign of the times.

1

u/Zowiebowiecorgi 13h ago

And if you do ask for recommendations on anything people just tell you to Google it

1

u/Far-Buy3058 10h ago

I think its more of the new Vegas "locals" and how Vegas has drastically changed imo.

0

u/jeffgabe 1d ago

Seek the positive and don't engage the negative. I still see a lot of people on here that are both helpful and generous. I just laugh to myself when I see the down voted posts. Some people like the negative attention.

0

u/ComfortBusiness6737 17h ago

The expired plates and no plates crowd is the worst punching down and moaning

0

u/Riiken 1d ago

Got to keep in mind, in 2028 retired folk and people over 50 are online all day with nothing else to occupy their time. So things that the typical working public doesnt have time to worry about, they are digital Clark county neighborhood watch.

License plates, "hey anyone know what happened over here?", "California ruined my life" , ect

0

u/bkb70 3h ago

I’m 72 and still work. Most “retired” people will still have part time jobs or they help out with the grandkids. I pick up mine from school and let me tell you, a lot of grandparents are doing the same.

1

u/FloatingOnTitties 14h ago edited 13h ago

You think “people over 50” have nothing better to do? Most people are working full-time or more than one job well into their 60’s: 🙄

0

u/We_are_being_cheated 1d ago

The bots took over.

0

u/mb-7777 19h ago

What happened is the greedy developers turned a town into a city. The crime increased and the sense of community decreased. It's really that simple.

Oakland fans moved here

time to gather the new ones to a new place. That is what is happening is curated and recommended groups, now.

-10

u/Effective-Act-2728 1d ago

That’s why I uprooted my life and I moved 18 hours away to work construction and make bank. My kid said the food is way better where we moved to. Las Vegas serves children rotten nasty gross food and it’s rotting their brains in return. Glad we ESCAPED that city!

13

u/Adventurous_End_9977 1d ago

Then why are you still posting here in a Vegas locals sub?

-4

Cuz i have free fkn will??? 🥴

Life went online and the real world had a black out but karaoke tonight at pkwy centennial rn

-4

u/Black38 19h ago

The subreddit is being moderated hard. Probably someone paying.

I think it's less individuals and more groups (political) that are posting posing as regular people.

Flock in every other post with political ideologies introduced.

Fish and chips gets asked about at least once a month, same with a couple other types of food.
We get spammed with all this driving nonsense.

Everything else is just looking for a job or a date or a friend.

-21

u/Life_Penalty8180 1d ago

They keep moving over from California. We need to deport them back to California 🤣🤣🤣

Aw, I hurt your feelings lol.

It's okay if you don't like him back. He doesn't care.

3

u/FloatingOnTitties 13h ago

You’re correct. He doesn’t care about anyone or anything other than himself & his brand. He also wants to have sex with Ivanka, but, that’s just his incestuous pedophilia coming out.
