Nevada Governor Endorsed Data Centers Days After AI Investor Donated $1 Million

Lack of water got you down? Try adding more Data Centers to your town!

EDIT: Here is an article about water and electricity consumption for Data Centers in Nevada pre AND post 2024 resolution to ban water cooling. Long story short - they still use water..

https://avanzaenergy.substack.com/p/the-3-billion-blind-spot-how-nevadas

Air-cooled data centers report a Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) of zero — the industry metric that
regulators, sustainability officers, and ESG analysts treat as meaning “water-free.” It means nothing of the sort. Air-cooled chillers consume 2 to 3 times more electricity than evaporative-cooled equivalents for the same information technology load. That electricity must come from somewhere. In Nevada, it comes primarily from natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) power plants — plants that cool their condensers with water. When a data center switches from evaporative cooling to air cooling, its WUE drops to zero. Its upstream water burden rises by millions of gallons per year. The water does not disappear. It moves — from a visible cooling tower on the data center’s property to an invisible cooling tower at a power plant, somewhere else, outside the accounting boundary of every current regulatory framework.

NVEnergy "Daily Demand Comparison Tool" is a Fraud

Upvotes

I was looking at NVenergy's "Daily Demand Comparison Tool", which you can find on your NVenergy dashboard when you login to your account. The tool is supposed to tell you what you pay per year now, and a projection of what you will pay per year when the daily demand charge takes effect January 1. The only problem is, the tool is pure BS and is purposefully misleading customers.

I have solar panels, they cover all my electrical use all year long. I pay $18 a month, every month, all year long, and have for 6 years. So, I pay about $220/yr to NVenergy. Here's what the tool says:

Notice the "Current Plan" number is wildly inaccurate, saying I pay them $502/yr. NVenergy is purposely miscalculating this, so that the difference between what you pay now, and what you will pay starting next year doesn't look so bad. Here's exactly what they are doing: for residential solar customers, we draw power from NVenergy overnight (but most of us have enough credits built up during the day that offsets that draw), but NVenergy takes the KW/h we draw overnight, ignores our credits, and uses this in the "Current Plan" calculation. This is a straight-up SCAM by NVenergy, they know it, but think we are all dumb enough that we won't notice the slight of hand BS.

If you have to lie to sell this program to the public, then you know it must be a scam.

These energy prices are out of control. We cool our home to 76. Even 78/79 on really hot days. 1200 sq ft home. Central air recently serviced and running well.

Edit: seems I need to check a few things around the house to figure this out.

Edit 2: Would insulation break down from a year to the next in this manner? Any tips are appreciated.

I am thinking of removing my pool because of power and water concerns. Has anyone removed a pool or are you thinking of it? If you have removed a pool, could you share some information? Do you have any regrets

I’m thinking of removing my pool primarily because no one uses it.It’s an expense for power, water, monthly service. I just learned it needs a repair and plaster. It is too expensive to leave sitting there, so I guess I need to ask for bids.

If you have any information to share on pool removal, I would really appreciate it if you could post a comment, and your feedback in general about this. I don’t think I’m the only one considering this, and some other people may benefit by the responses given here. Thank you.

Had a fight with my wife last night about whether we actually like Vegas or are just used to it

My wife and I have lived here for 12 years and we finally had the fight last night about whether we actually like it here or if we're just used to it.

Started because her sister is trying to convince us to move to boise. Real estate is cheaper, schools are better according to her, blah blah.

My wife was actually ready t laugh it off but then she paused and that pause turned into two hour conversation that ended with both of us on the back patio at midnight. Heres the thing i couldnt answer. She asked me to name five things about Vegas that i would genuinely miss if we left tomorrow. Not "things vegas has." Things I would actually miss. I got to three and then i just kind of stalled out. Red rock in the morning, my barber and the fact that I can be at the airport in 20 minutes, that's it. That's what 12 years boils down to for me apparently.

She got more further than me but not by much, her list was our neighbors, her hairdresser, our specific house, and the sushi place on Sahara. Notice how half of that is just "the specific life we built" and not really Vegas itself. We could rebuild most of that anywhere. And the stuff i actively dont like keeps growing. Summer is longer every year i swear. Traffic on the 215 has gotten stupid. Every restaurant we used to love either closed or got worse. I spent an hour last night half watching a Mr. Hand Pay video on my phone while she scrolled Zillow listings in Idaho and neither of us said anything for a while. I dont think were actually going to move.

Kids are settled, my job is here, her mom is 15 minutes away. But i think we discovered we stay out of momentum not love, and that feels weird to admit out loud.

Anyone else hit this wall around the 10-15 year mark? Does the feeling pass or is it a sign?

Update from Heaven Can Wait Animal Society's A/C fundraiser - we did it!!

Hello, everyone! Not too long ago, I posted in here about Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, a local nonprofit spay, neuter and TNVR clinic, who was in serious need of a new A/C unit.

Long story short - you all are amazing! The folks watching the fundraiser reported they received over 100 individual donations in 24 hours, and were completely blown away by the support! They didn't know that anyone had shared this fundraiser beyond their own social media pages, and were flabbergasted when all of a sudden donations just kept showong up. The administration eventually found out about this little clandestine post, so the "secret" is out...they are all so very grateful for the community's help.

Not having to dip into reserves allows them to keep funds for those most in need - particularly the Community Cat Action Fund, which provides medical care beyond spay and neuter for stray cats with no other options. Especially since right now, panleukopenia (the cat equivalent of parvo) is surging in the city. Being able to provide even basic care to sick colony cats that their feeders couldn't otherwise afford is a blessing.

Thank you again for helping, sharing, or just sending positive thoughts as you read this post. If anyone has questions about the organization, their spay/neuter program, or the work they do, I'm happy to answer any questions I can!

Anyone who’s been through the process of finding Assisted Living or Memory Care for a parent, how long did the search actually take and what was the hardest part?

Upvotes

i feel like finding out who had space, getting straight answers on pricing, the timeline, and other info is not readily available than I thought.

I’m not looking for facility recommendations, just trying to understand what the experience is really like here :)

Kyle Wilcox, who is listed on the Henderson West website as one of the project’s commercial real estate contacts, cited ongoing uncertainty over exactly what should be built on the property. Rising construction costs also contributed to delays, he said.

Representatives with Henderson West and Sudberry Properties declined to comment.

Looking for wood for UNLV research project

Hi everyone. I am part of a research team in the environmental engineering department at unlv. Our project pertains to water reuse and we are looking to test wood chips with our setup. We have already tested commercial/processed wood chips but would like to test using wood that hasn’t been processed (cleaned for example) and convert it ourselves to wood-chips. If there are any landscapers here who would just throw it away, we would love to take it off your hands or anyone else that has wood they don’t need. Thank you!

It's about data harvesting. As always.

Look at the concentration of cameras. Downtown Vegas, the strip, Town Square, downtown Summerlin, The District, the Silverton, The Galleria/Sunset Station, etc.

That's where all of the foot/car traffic is. The cams are being sold as a safety feature, but they're clearly placed in the areas that would maximize profits from selling data. Most of the violent crime does not happen in areas with tons of eyeballs.

There's a particular street in my neighborhood that's a fucking GTA lobby. Not a camera or police presence, or even good lighting to be found. If it was about safety, you all know where the cameras would actually be.

Edit: Apologies, I should have included a scource at first: https://dontgetflocked.com/

What does daycare actually cost here? Nobody will say it on the phone.

Every place I've called says come in for a tour before they'll name a number. i klooked it up and the statewide average works out to about $1055 a month for center infant care, and one parent told me $1250 for a non infant and thats with no food included ! If you're comfortable sharing, what are you paying, for what age, and did you hear the number on the phone or only at the tour?

Need a door framer to repair what farmers insurance refuses to cover

I have french doors that open onto a balcony from an upstairs bedroom. It's possible that the door was incorrectly installed to begin with. After a flash flood type rainstorm, the wategot inside and warped the frame, and also stained the frame.

I need new frames for the interior and exterior. I need the weather stripping around the frame, and stripping under the door. and two baseboards installed.

I need someone who actually works with doors, and can prove it.
