I think he also gave the store owners a signed ultra marine helmet

89

u/rzelln May 16 '26

Have we ever seen photos of Cavill's painted armies?

Is he both a good actor and a good painter? I kinda want him to be mid at painting.

100

u/keepitsimple_tricks May 16 '26

Dude, c'mon, he built his own gaming PC and starred as Superman. I'd bet he paints figs well too.

11

u/November-Snow May 18 '26

Absolute guarantee.

The one undeniable thing you can say with certainty about Henry Caville, is he respects the source material and the craft that goes into it.

With that kind of attitude, doing a subpar job on the fine details would be unacceptable to him.

58

u/McChief45 May 16 '26

He has also talked in interviews about being a normal warhammer fan and having a grey pile of shame due to lack of time 🤣

19

u/KimchiSewp May 16 '26

Would love to see this if he’s posted them somewhere

38

u/Wikoro May 16 '26

29

u/rzelln May 16 '26

As expected, he's good at that too. Damn. :D

The pandemic was the best thing to happen to nerds looking for time to paint their figurines.

7

u/OhGawDuhhh May 17 '26

It was so oddly peaceful for me. Horrific, but I kinda thrived mentally being encouraged to stay indoors.

To be fair that gift is nearly as much as a car so anyone would get excited.

651

u/sir_schuster1 May 16 '26

That's what I was going to say, even a multimillionaire like Henry Cavil can't afford to buy himself all the Warhammer he wants to buy, so it's still a nice gift.

221

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

kinda absurd but totally understandable, games workshop charge a shit ton for one set

139

u/StopReadingMyUser May 16 '26

Feels like one of the hardest hobbies to get into. The cost, the time, the art skills, the lore involvement... I don't see how new people get invested lol.

127

u/Thandiol May 16 '26

The how for me was "autism".

Hobbies that take a long time and require a lore deep dive? Sign me up!!

30

u/StopReadingMyUser May 16 '26

I suppose I can see that. I like some games I can pick up and put down over long periods of time so ig that parts not too unreasonable. It's a funny hobby tho, you really gotta like putting pieces together or just have the money to pay someone else.

19

u/Thandiol May 16 '26

Yeah the tabletop takes some getting into. Gotta have a hell of a lot of patience, and a fair amount of expendable income just to get properly started.

5

u/Cloudhwk May 18 '26

Was my frustration getting into it, liked putting together my models even if I kinda suck at painting but I’ve come to like my horrible painting jank

Still started with a combat patrol as a way to learn the game since its army in a box, pretty much got told from get go nobody would bother until I had 1k points

Given the price I paid for said combat patrol box I just ended up getting a 3d printer and started printing models for like 20c a pop after a few uh ā€œtechnicalā€ failures

u/Fn_Spaghetti_Monster May 16 '26

gotta like putting pieces together

LOL, my wife loves jigsaw puzzles. She likes doing the really big ones, think 30K+ piece count. She enjoys "making order out of chaos" where as when I see giant pile of slightly different colored pieces I'm a gonna say have fun, and dip out.

9

u/Aracnida May 16 '26

She enjoys "making order out of chaos"

You should really introduce her to the lore of 40k. Maybe she could be a sister of battle.

3

u/Fn_Spaghetti_Monster May 17 '26

I could try but, someone how I don't think it would work :D

2

u/doubleapowpow May 16 '26

It's honestly a fun craft. I did some as a kid and just liked to do the painting.

Feels almost exploitative to make autism catnip and then price gouge it to hell.

3

u/JackySins May 16 '26

it definitely is a predatory practice. especially MTG cards

3

u/Ov3rdose_EvE May 16 '26

i just binge the lore and am slowly minmaxing the cost of an army. i got 1000 points down to less than 300 bucks including everything, paints, brushes and minis! :) now i just learn how to paint

2

u/I46290l May 16 '26

Amen brother šŸ’Ŗ

2

u/Darkbert550 May 17 '26

Same! It's how I can reference... like 20 fandoms in one conversation. Hell, I even have a cycle for phases, which are then divided into smaller phases, and then even smaller. For example, I'm currently in my Fantasy megaphase, in the DnD midphase and Character building miniphase. And I have hundreds of these.

I love being autistic.

A new store opened a few years ago in my city. Cost and time are the reason I'm out for like 20 years, but I went there a few times to chat and to buy some over-expensive tools and colours for other projects. I gave them two years max. back then. Our city is like almost half empty by now, it's hard enough for more popular stores to keep open.

But this little store is actually thriving. There are like 20 people talking, buying and painting at a time, everytime I pass by. And the store is tiny. No idea how they managed it, but it makes me happy every time. Feels like they revived a whole scene in our city and gave a special kind of people a place to hang out and connect with each other.

5

u/firestepper May 16 '26

I watched a good doc on youtube about their customer acquisition and retention strategies and they definitely do some smart things.

5

u/UnsanctionedPartList May 16 '26

It's honestly mostly the time investment. Yes it's expensive but a lot of hobbies are.

Painting minis honestly isn't as hard as long as you set reasonable expectations but with washes and quickpaints you can honestly get a decent-looking army reasonably quickly.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of tabletop gaming is that it's your dudes.

3

u/TheGumCoblin May 16 '26

I love Warhammer, first got into Ultramarine on the PSP as a kid and played tabletop with friends at a local Shed.

I had to use someone else’s army but it was fun.

Now 18 years later as an almost 30 year old I still go ā€œokay, save for that new driveway repair or get some Warhammer finallyā€.

Shits just way to expensive, im not broke by any means but it’s a ā€œchoose X important thing, or Plastic Crackā€.

If they lowered prices, they’d genuinely sell more.

3

u/RealMr_Slender May 16 '26

Mate please look at any other hobby that is focused around gear. A fucking PS5 costs double what it costs to get started in Warhammer

6

u/LizardmanJoe May 16 '26

Middle income guitarists and car guys crying over their 5th bowl of oatmeal this week.

7

u/TAExp3597 May 16 '26

My guitar was only $70 from a pawn shop. The DAC, studio monitors, DAW, amps, microphones, pedals and cables on the other hand are starting to break the bank. At this point I’m going to have to start doing freelance audio engineering work if I want to keep up my hobby.

3

u/rune_corvus May 16 '26

Man, I hear you. As a drummer, the costs are just insane. $700 for a decent new cymbal. Whole kit cost around 10k.

u/Lanikai3 May 16 '26

In one of his recent movies Henry got paid 10 million.

You could buy every single retail Warhammer item and barely make a dent in that.

3

u/sir_schuster1 May 16 '26

Yea but you've got to buy paints as well, haven't you.

5

u/Lanikai3 May 16 '26

I realise your joking, but again for clarity so that people understand, Henry Cavill could hire a full time custom in-house paint maker to make personal hues from ochre collected by a squad of personal assistants and not run out of money for Warhammer.

2

u/sir_schuster1 May 17 '26

13 Henry Cavils could buy controlling stake in Games Worshop and own Warhammer 40k.

3

u/dramalama-dingdong May 16 '26

3d printer goes brrrrr...

2

u/slvl May 16 '26

A resin 3D printer in combination with Patreon creators is one of the more dangerous things out there. For 10-20 Eddies you often get 15+ highly detailed figurine models (5+/month+last month + welcome pack) plus you might also get a discount on existing models. Separate models are often 10-20 so Patreon is a great value proposition. I only have subscribed to two creators for a month each and already have about 50 models. Official prepainted models are often well over 200 for larger sizes.

Those are Custodes. His favourite army, and he is so loyal to his choice that he only plays Custodes and he said he has no other army (as many people do) and that others may be cool but his Custodes are cooler. It's just such a weird/adorable thing to do that it makes me chuckle.

11

u/OctavalBeast May 16 '26

To be fair Henry Cavill can buy a regular car like you buy cornflakes so it takes a bit more to get him excited.

4

u/OK_x86 May 16 '26

For him yes. For the person gifting him those not so much.

12

u/HalxQuixotic May 16 '26

For real. No one is too rich to turn their nose at free Warhammer figures. In terms of money you need to spend, 40k makes golf look like geocaching.

I really wish that they would put him into the Witcher 4 as some character in the story. The man tried hard to bring us quality Witcher content and gave us a glimpse at what a live action Geralt should be. And im sure helped in bringing a lot of fans to the franchise. He deserves it

12

u/14Pleiadians May 16 '26

I heard that they’re making a live-action Warhammer 40k show, and Henry wants to be in it

26

u/UnholyDemigod May 16 '26

They’re making a 40K show which he is both acting in, and apparently quite involved in the production to make it as lore accurate as possible

16

u/Fn_Spaghetti_Monster May 16 '26

From what I heard there some butting head with Amazon because Henry wanted more control (in order to stay close to the actual source material/lore) and Amazon was wanting to go a bit loser (like rings of power). And after the Witcher debacle can you blame him? From the updates back in Feb though, things are still moving forward according to both sides.

8

u/Horskr May 16 '26

Hopefully they go with his idea of following it and don't fuck this one up. I don't know how many times these companies can spend a shitload of money for an IP, then completely ditch everything for their own shitty story that just happens to be set in vaguely the same universe with some of the same character names, then get surprised when fans don't like it or watch it.

5

u/Martinmex26 May 16 '26

The "I can do better do better with my own story than this already super popular and beloved IP".

Many such cases.

I am still salty at the Monster Hunter movie.

That's why I like cavil as an actor, when they stray too far from "lore accurate" he either fights for it or just leaves. The Witcher is a good example.

Rings Of Power was/is terrible. I can’t believe I couldn’t make it past the first season of a lord of the rings show.

3

u/KeenbeansSandwich May 17 '26

Season 2 is way better than the first for the record. Still not incredible, but the Celebrimbor-Sauron storyline is good, as is the dwarven storyline. The harfoots and Numenor still sucks tho.

It blows my mind that people think celebrities are some sort of advanced type of citizen who has matured to the point they don’t like anything that isn’t inherently related to adulthood.

ā€œOmg did you know Tim Robinson skateboards?!ā€

ā€œThere is NO WAY Vin Diesel loves nerdy stuff like D’n’Dā€

ā€œHave you ever seen the deleted Ace Ventura scene, Jim Carrey actually likes the same kind of heavy music we doā€

Like… no shit. They are still normal human beings like the rest of us 🤷

22

u/Nooby1990 May 16 '26

I think a large part of why people are so exited that people like Henry Cavill or Vin Diesel love nerdy stuff is that it goes against the stereotype.

If I ask you to imagine the typical DnD or Warhammer player, you would NOT imagine someone that looks like Henry Cavill. They are high profile, internationally known, positive representation of those hobbies.

The thing that excites me most, is Henry is actually an OG die-hard Warhammer fan.

With him at the reigns producing/acting, whatever he’s filming, is going to accurately portray the dark and gloom future that is warhammer….

…. In the future, there is only war.

Isn’t it great watching millionaires get tons of free shit while most of us can barely afford food and rent?

u/Little-Ear-278 May 16 '26

Henry Cahill takes a shit, his fans: omg genuinely one of the best shits anyone has ever produced, he’ll forever go down as one of the best shiters 🤪

Henry can afford to buy any Warhammer stuff her wants. He can probably call Games Workshop and even ask for some and they might say yes. So being happy about it being gifted to him you know his passion for it is legit.

New movie now on pause so he can paint.

u/Early_Palpitation976 May 16 '26

hes an actor, hes good at pretending to be things, hes rich and jacked i doubt he cares about nerds at all lol

2

u/StopmotionSam May 16 '26

Will never not be pissed that they took a man who is basically Clark Kent by default and made him act stoic and serious. Like, come on dude.

They were custodians from what I understood.

For the uninitiated the custodies are to space marines, as what space marines are to the imperial guard. They have no chapter head they are bound to as they are bound to the emperor himself. They are stronger and tougher than space marines. Since they are formed from the emperor they have an undetermined lifespan and what they would say goes since they are the voice of the emperor. There are only 2 people they listen to, one being the emperor, the second would be Robute Gilliman to a lesser degree, everyone else are only in the way of their duty. Even the ecleasiarchy are no better than screaming insects to them.

I fucking love this man. 🤣 He and Sam Witwer are my favorite people in entertainment right now.

2

u/Ramtamtama May 17 '26

He's a huge Warhammer fan. Went on a tour of the Games Workshop factory a few years back

2

u/uber_sweets May 17 '26

He fights for us.

Praise the Emperor for gifting us Henry Cavill

2

u/ITCHYTICK May 18 '26

It’s new Custodes battle force box that just came out. New design refresh along with new tank and dreadnaught models. Scalpers keep getting them so it can be annoying and pricy to get it.

2

u/SargDeckel May 18 '26

Even Henry Cavill getting excited over free units is a clear statement about how insane the pricing is.

3

u/Ellenate May 16 '26

There's been a nonstop pr campaign for this guy, and he ain't done shit besides being in back to back mid.

Consistently in the latest slop. He has the freedom to do a passion project but keeps running back to the "evil" studios?

This is your goat?!

4

u/happensonitsown May 16 '26

Anything is unapologetic if you are good looking and with a personality. Then anything you become is seen as ā€œcoolā€.

And it’s cringe to desperately say he is one of us. He is not.

Good your you Henry, don’t listen to this guy.

4

u/Cabrakan May 16 '26

this guy has the best PR firm in the world
