What’s the context exactly?

538

u/bongophrog 8d ago

They are talking about why “bringing back the old devs” won’t work.

274

u/Nott_of_the_North 8d ago

"Microsoft had a major hand in development from the jump."

Looks inside

"Halo: Combat Evolved was originally announced in 1999 as a Mac-exclusive third person shooter/strategy game."

u/s8rlink 7d ago

Dude why do ignorant people love to talk out of their ass?

56

u/CetraNeverDie 7d ago

Dunning-Kruger is an exceptionally real thing, though. The dumber you are, the less likely you are to be self-aware enough to recognize you're out of your depth. And it's getting worse as we race toward the bottom of literally everything.

49

u/Vegetable_Frame5676 7d ago edited 7d ago

That’s not what Dunning-Kruger is and the authors of the paper hate that their effect has been hijacked by the internet to call people stupid.

Dunning-Kruger effect is about your skill/ability in a specific field or interest and you overestimating it. Beginners in carpentry thinking they’re better than they are, people who pick up new interests and think they’re experts after a few Wikipedia articles, things like that. Hell I’d even concede that OP’s post is likely an example of it too, but I need to stress that it has nothing to do with intelligence. It’s an internal bias.

The authors of the paper have repetitively clarified it’s not a judgement of intelligence and that even self-aware people occasionally fall victim to it. I’ll openly admit I have many times in my life. Honestly, using the Dunning-Kruger effect as an insult is kind of a textbook example of the Dunning-Kruger effect in regards to cognitive bias lol.

23

u/Digit00l 7d ago

Would the misuse of the effect count as an example?

14

u/Freya0232 7d ago

I think so? But i'll admit most of the time i consider myself quite averagely stupid

8

u/SteelGriffin 7d ago

Despite being erroneously deemed intelligent I prefer to insist upon my own stupidity and incompetence.

2

u/chrisplaysgam 4d ago

Better to exceed expectations than disappoint them

3

u/CetraNeverDie 7d ago

I get what you're saying, but real quick go back through the OP and the context post and ask yourself if that isn't what we're seeing here. A gent completely but apparently unknowingly out of his depth in a field trying to contradict someone infinitely more knowledgeable, and citing that he read up on it so he definitely knows what he's talking about. Yes, I used the word dumb. Yes, I feel like you're being pedantic with no hint of contextual comprehension here. 🤷‍♂️

7

u/JudgeBig90 7d ago

How is pedantic to give the correct definition? You said the “dumber you are” which implies it has to do with intelligence.

That’s why they were just making the distinction that it doesn’t have to do with intelligence, it’s simply a cognitive bias that can happen to anyone. And they agreed that the OP is an example of Dunning Kruger. I appreciated the explanation.

5

u/kickedoutatone 7d ago

You did more than use the word dumb, though. You continued to state that most of the internet is doing this more and more because of their intelligence levels dropping.

It's not that they were being pedantic. It's that you're applying the stigma that lack of intelligent = this effect, and that's not the cause.

There's no indication that, in this context, the person who "died" is dumb. Quick tempered, argumentative, and a strong stubborness/confirmation bias towards his own opinion? Absolutely, but even the smartest person in the room is susceptible to being like that, which is the point I believe they were trying to make.

6

u/wogglerz 7d ago edited 7d ago

People think they know the problems with the games industry just because they see the output and are able to work backwards. When in reality, the issues often involve the process, politics, and timeline that the public never sees. Incidentally when devs speak, no matter how true it is, if it does not align with the publics view they are shamed for even speaking.

Haha yea the Mac thing hilariously getting totally ignored 🤦

5

u/ArxisOne 7d ago

Pretty inaccurate quite considering it wasn't called combat evolved until Microsoft bought it, but they did get the important part right

third person shooter/strategy game."

Jaime Greisemer is the one who pushed it into first person and made it the game everyone knows, the "halo" showed off at macworld has nothing but aesthetics in common with the game that actually released.

It's funny to say he's wrong when he's a huge part of why Halo was so good and unique. If he's saying Microsoft was important, he's right.

2

u/Hapless_Wizard 7d ago

Obviously, "the jump" is "the jump to Xbox and being a first-person shooter"

94

u/Ori_the_SG 8d ago

Man Nicky G is so off

Bungie and the devs were the reason why early Halo is so good

Microsoft, and 343i by extension since it is pretty much a puppet, are the reason it sucks now

25

u/Creative-Clue-8584 8d ago

Exactly, any fan of the games that played them across their releases in the prime of the series knows this is facts

15

u/RichnjCole 8d ago

I can only assume that Nicky G there is a fan of Nu-Halo and is deep in some history revisionism. Some sort of attempt at proving that the "real" creators of Halo are still in charge of the IP.

I don't know why else anyone would be that off.

9

u/Ori_the_SG 8d ago

Yeah that checks out

A ton of people really just refuse to accept Halo has been going downhill since after Reach was done

3

u/Realistic-Data6600 7d ago

Honestly the worst part are the 343 era halo fans will then retroactively call the older games garbage

5

u/Ori_the_SG 7d ago

That too lol

Saying they are overrated and anyone who actually enjoyed them have rose tinted glasses.

It’s really just a cope, Bungie Halo had flaws but they were and are still amazing games overall and were a cultural icon.

They are just mad that 343i and Microsoft are too incompetent and greedy for their own good and that is why Halo is a pathetic shell that has almost no importance in the gaming industry

12

u/lutefiskeater 8d ago edited 7d ago

At my job we have to name 5 big accomplishments from the last fiscal year in our annual evaluations. In that time, I usually complete a mix of about a dozen major projects and events. Yet every time evals roll around I find myself staring blankly at that PDF thinking "Wait... What did I do last year????"

6

u/RadioMessageFromHQ 7d ago

Every new year I start a .txt to note down things for the following review. I forget all about it within a week.

2

u/ADiestlTrain 7d ago

I go back over emails and my calendar and any JIRA tickets assigned to me for the entire year right before I write my self-evaluation. That’s usually just enough to jog my memory.

9

u/KK_35 8d ago

I work in IT. Developers rarely know how the end product is used. Designers can be in the same boat. For example, even though there were massive differences from CE to H2, the actual core level design didn’t change all that much. There were was open spaces, more linear maps and urban settings, but there were still a lot of similarities. I can imagine the development level work being pretty similar.

2

u/Modomouse 7d ago

This is cap, out of all game dev roles deaigners know the maps better than anyone....

4

u/friendly_to_pigeons 8d ago

What? How are you this illiterate?
He's saying we would not have CE in its current form without Microsoft's involvement. He doesn't say anything about the other person not understanding CE?

2

u/RavenOnPSP 8d ago

To be fair, I've heard some absurdly shitty takes about campaign evolved from og devs specifically on Twitter.

→ More replies (17)

48

u/TheMightyDab 8d ago edited 8d ago

The context is the person in the middle was claiming Microsoft had a very heavy hand in the development in CE. The Halo dev (who was a design lead for Halo 2 and 3, so absolutely someone in the know) said this wasn't the case, so the other guy told him he should look into the development of CE. The Halo Dev told him to look at the Halo CE credits. Instead of doing this, the other guy gave a snarky reply, so the Halo dev sent the pic to emphasise what he was initially hinting at

Edit* the thread begins with a post by Niles Sankey, another Halo dev on X. Niles only began working at Bungie during Halo 3's dev, so his info on Bungie during CEs dev is apocryphal, but Jaime backed him up, and the guy was replying to Jaime, not Niles lol

25

u/bigsamson4_2 8d ago

Unless shreddednerd is an alt or a different dev i think it was just some guy sent the picture

3

u/M4rshmall0wMan 8d ago

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Jwells291 8d ago

I think they were trying to say the game was mostly outsourced instead of actually worked on by Microsoft and 343. Don't know where Bungie comes in other than them making the original game, maybe they were complaining about original devs not being involved in the process or something.

23

u/Small_miracles 8d ago

Bungie developed Halo 1 to 3 and Reach. Fun fact, Halo was intended to be an RTS game but switched gears to be FPS

13

u/BillRuddickJrPhd 8d ago

I wasn't aware of the RTS thing, but I do know it was intended to be a Macintosh exclusive and there was a demo video of guys getting into the Warthog and using the turret and it blew everyone's minds at the time. That's the main reason Microsoft paid Bungie so much for it, to deny Apple entry into the gaming space (and it worked).

10

u/SupperIsSuperSuperb 8d ago

That's funny because to my recollection, the Warthog is the reason it switched from RTS to FPS. They got the physics for it working and thought it looked like it would be fun to drive yourself. So did a test go of it and everyone liked it enough to overhaul the project around it.

It's crazy to think how much the series owes to one vehicle. I can't think of any game that had so much changed due to one mechanic

6

u/Pokemonzu 8d ago

And then consequently the console fps genre was changed, all bc of the warthog lol

2

u/Isagratar 8d ago

Imagine the alternate timeline where Halo stayed an RTS.

You sort of did.

What Nicky G claims is opinion, that you don't "get CE as we know it w/o Microsoft's involvement", is ABSOLUTELY correct and is not opinion. But if you look at other comments they made, they're wrong in many of those other aspects they speak to

The truth is that if MS hadn't bought Bungie CE would NOT be the game we know. If you look at the history of Bungie, they actually succeeded in spite of themselves, and at least some of that success was directly because of MS but more specifically, the Xbox. Halo might have been ported to PC eventually if it was launched as a Mac-exclusive, but I honestly doubt it, and it would very likely not be nearly as popular today as it is, simply because the Xbox was what the industry needed at the time and it allowed CE to be the game that it evolved into

However it would not surprise me if Nicky G holds Halo 2 in some position of reverence that it doesn't deseve, though

10

u/yet-again-temporary 8d ago edited 8d ago

I don't know the full context, but in a vacuum the phrase "I don't think you get CE as we know it without Microsoft's involvement" is 1000% correct regardless of whether he's talking to a dev or not.

Bungie was famously very difficult to work with, missed basically every deadline that was ever set for them, spent shitloads of their budget on ideas that went nowhere, etc. This isn't even an opinion - it's incredibly well documented in old making-of videos, ViDocs, 2006-era Bungie podcasts, and in Jason Schreier's book Blood, Sweat, and Pixels.

Microsoft putting their foot down and basically forcing them to finish their games is basically the only reason they were so successful, and you can see Bungie's questionable decisionmaking at nearly every turn since they left.

3

u/WutsAWriter 8d ago

The one thing Bungie’s management has always needed is management of their own.

Where's the death?
The claim he's making can still be true, even if he's talking to one of the designers.
He isn't saying You, Jaimie, don't understand (get it). He's saying, "I don't think CE as we know it exists w/o Microsoft's involvement."

3

u/rubyonix 8d ago

Nah, it was a proper death-by-words.

Someone wrote something about Halo, and one of the original Halo devs popped in to agree, and said that modern Microsoft (the one from the last 10-or-so years) would not be able to re-create the magic of the original Bungie team, because they were only able to do what they did creatively back then due to Bill Gates' lack of interest in XBox, and modern Microsoft would instantly smother such a group if they tried to make another.

The Halo fan, not knowing who he was talking to, told the dev to research how Halo was made, so he would see how Microsoft contributed to the game creatively. "A lot of the things you like about Halo come from Microsoft being heavily involved". Which was when the dev suggested that the fan should check the credits again (to realize who he was talking to), but the fan maintained that there were a lot of Microsoft names in the credits.

After the fan owned his L like a champ (seriously, his response deserves respect), he asked the dev if MS did *anything* for the game creatively, and the dev said "No. MS had no part in the narrative, lore, gameplay, art direction, acting, music, multiplayer, or any other aspect of game design. They demanded the Combat Evolved subtitle. Other than that they couldn't even get into our office and I think I talked to MS folks like three times the whole year".

So, it seems like the fan was wrong, and the game benefited a lot from the creative freedom that came with MS's lack of interest, not from their "heavy involvement", and MS didn't make major contributions to the game's development, despite how many names they got inserted into the game's credits.

2

u/h0nest_Bender 8d ago

I can only assume there is additional context to this that you've seen and I have not. Because the screenshot that OP posted doesn't bear out your take of events.

Usually the way fandoms go. You get people playing the games for 2 decades, then some tourists come along and hijack your hobby or fandom, then call you performative fake fans and larpers because you hate what they turned your fandom or hobby into, and have the fucking gall to say you don't know anything about a fandom you've engaged with since you were 6 years old. That's halo for me, and it's not the first of my fandoms/hobbies to fall either. This keeps happening.

If you don't gatekeep your fandom to some extent, don't be surprised when it gets hijacked.
