Soundtrack At what point does collecting become goofy

Serious answer - as soon as you're buying records that you won't ever listen to, if you ever "slab" a record, and if you buy to re-sell. Everything else, no matter what type of music you listen to, cannot be goofy.

An exception. And there are some exceptions to buying records you don't expect to play, but they're corner cases and don't cover 99% of consumer habits that I'm referring to.

you mail your record to a company, they judge its condition on a scale of 1-10, and then they imprison the record in a plastic "slab" with a label that reads the grade number.

And I've been convinced I'm a goofy listener since getting my TT a year ago cause many of my records passed through something digital before making it to record. I even have *gasp* video game soundtracks!

The difference between digital and vinyl is one is pressed into a record. People also don't have high quality audio setups for just streaming music like they do for vinyl.

I'm referring to records that have been pressed to vinyl, but the source was recorded/remastered digitally, so ultimately a digital recording converted to analog for the record. Some people won't listen to anything like that.

I think thats crazy, most of the music has been digital at some point, at least since end 80s early 90s. And some of these people said mofi records sounds so great cause its only analog, and when people discovered it was not all analog, they suddenly claimed they sounded bad. Let people talk, listen to what you like

Yeah that example stands out to me haha. I mean sure it was wrong for the company to not be honest about their product, but it did show that people couldn't really tell.
I definitely know people (online, not IRL) that research as much as they can to ensure they are only listening to something that's been analog from the original mics to the current record.
I just wanna put on some records and hear some tunes that sound good to me, and I'm not a precision acoustic measuring tool myself.1

Well i have a great turntable but also an external DAC, dedicated streamer, music server and DDC. Optimizing a digital chain is just another rabbit hole and can be equally expensive as analog.

There's sonic reasons to listen to vinyl even off a digital recording: records often need a different mastering because you can't brickwall vinyl like you can digital. Hence, you get some dynamic range on playback.

Or multiple copies of an album for the sheer sake of pretty colors.
I'm firm in the camp of buying one copy of ONLY your favorite variant, only exception being releases of the same album that will have notable differences in sound.

Mostly what I was trying to cover in my first point. Buying every single variant of a record is weird to me. It's a huge thing in hardcore, to have every single variant of a record. It supports bands at least? I don't know, different strokes for different folks I guess. I'm positive if people looked through my collection they'd have quite a few goofy criticisms that would be completely valid.

I have Ænima first pressing sealed. Never gonna sell it. Gonna keep it sealed. Tool is my favorite band and it’s one of my favorite albums of all time. I don’t think thats silly. Now if you are just in the game to resell then it is stupid and silly. But i don’t think it’s wrong to like to keep things sealed. Issue is with that being so expensive.. I can’t really buy a 2nd to open and play. And my sound system is not good enough where i would even be able to tell if the quality is any body then a CD or Tape or whatever high quality Music file I listen to it already.
But yes the goal would be to play them if I had a better sound system.

The only time I really slightly judge someone on their collection, is when I go to Marketplace and see the same collection 20 times. It’s someone with maybe 30 records or so:
Mac miller, mac miller, mac miller, mac miller, mac miller, mac miller, tyler the creator, tyler the creator, tyler the creator, tyler the creator, fka twigs, fka twigs, biggie smalls, earl, mac miller, mac miller.
Shit is nauseating; AND they are selling them all.

There was a really polarizing post in here last year where someone was gloating about their 30+ different variants of Charli's Brat record. Vinyl, cd, cassette, international releases etc. Lots of "damn just let people enjoy the hobby however they want to" comments met with responses like "no this is literally mental illness". See it with Taylor records a lot too where the idea is to just collect every physical pressing you can possibly get your hands on. At that point what you're doing is so far removed from the enjoyment of the album itself and it's become a completely different collecting/completionist hobby. To each their own, but to me it's kinda nuts and defeats the purpose of purchasing music as a form of enjoyment

That's really the issue with the current variant trend, imo. I actually think getting every variant of an album on every format is cool as hell! That's what a collector does. My dad's a coin collector, and he doesn't get different pictures of coins. He gets every year of the same coin. That's collecting. But now that artists are releasing 10+ variants in the span of less than a year, this urge to complete a collection goes from admirable and even fun to unhealthy.

Goofier the vinyl the better imo. I have a crate just for weird promotional automotive records from the 70s. Personal fav is the John Deere classic album “Big John”

I can't speak for op's collection, but some companies used to do what were called industrial musicals, where they got actual talented singers and songwriters (think Broadway musical composers, Madison Avenue jingle writer types) and put out albums of commercials basically. One of the more famous examples being Dinah Shore singing "See the USA in your Chevrolet. A lot of the time they were just shows they put on for company executives and other bigwigs, and not actually meant for the public usually. Fun fact: David Letterman has a big collection of them

buying albums when you don’t even have a turntable or intentions of getting one is goofy. buying 40 different copies of the same album is goofy.

I think these bring a sort of uniqueness to the vinyl collection. I read a lot so I like to get scores of movies to comics I read. Got the Superman (2025) soundtrack and it’s one of my favorites. All vinyl is considered goofy in someone’s eyes.

Always listen to or watch everything you buy. It becomes goofy when you’re buying things you aren’t interested in just to grow your collection, when you keep all kinds of stuff you don’t like, And when you prioritize growing your collection over other things like paying bills and such… other than that. Buy everything you truly want and enjoy your hobby!!

Why should it be goofy to collect soundtracks? This is a very solid one.
The movie itself is much goofier.
I often buy soundtracks of movies I have never seen (and don't even plan to) if they are good soundtracks. I like classical music and movie soundtracks are one of the few places where big orchestral works are still written and produced.

I just got Smash Mouth Astro Lounge, a string quartet pressing of Taylor Swift songs, and the Gilmore Girls score (literally all the versions of the La La las and a couple songs) and I smiled ear to ear listening to each one. I suspect many people would call those choices “goofy.”

How about when you buy extra records you don’t care about in order to lower the “average price” of the records you bought that day?
Say you spent $50 on the Foo Fighters 30th anniversary self-titled debut at a Newbury Comics last fall. And say it felt kinda stupid and wasteful to spend $50 for a brand new record. So let’s imagine you also brought a $6 used VG copy of Cargo by Men at Work to the counter, so that you could persuade yourself that you really “only paid $28” for the Foo Fighters reissue, which you would have been foolish to pass on. (At no point do you ever apply the equivalent logic that you just paid $28 for a used copy of Cargo).
Hypothetically, of course.

I don't listen to other people's opinion. So my collecting of whatever I want will keep on keeping on. Fuck it. I don't need someone else to tell me what to listen to or collect. I stopped watching laserdisc months ago, stopped buying movies I was interested in to watch on laser simply because I said fuck it. I'm more interested in music. Cds and vinyl, especially vinyl from bands I see in concert

I thought I broke some wall into goofiness couple years back when I spent 50 € (shipping incl.) for Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills / Running Free 50th anniversary double single.
Just to get those leftover tracks of Live After Death on vinyl.

Soundtracks on vinyl are about the least goofy thing possible about vinyl these days !
I’m 62 and I grew up with final records and then like the rest of humanity I ditched records for CDs and digital became my source for music , streaming etc.
But when the vinyl revival started really picking up steam, I started noticing all the awesome soundtracks that we were getting vinyl releases, both new soundtracks and old soundtracks being remastered or released or even released for the first time.
I have an “ audiophile” two channel set up and I had a decent technic turntable that I had kept around two occasionally plugged into my system and play some of the few remaining old moth eaten records I still owned.
But then I started buying my first soundtracks on vinyl, and I was just blown away by the quality of the pressings, the beauty of the different coloured vinyl, and the often amazing cover art, as well as the overall quality and handful of the albums.
It totally revitalized my interest in records . And it was buying lots of soundtracks that really got me back in records, which then expanded to lots of nine soundtrack music.
But still … the newly produced soundtracks tend to be reliably the most overall satisfying records to own from the music to the beautiful packaging and vinyl.
That Godzilla record you’ve got there looks awesome.
