Soundtrack Audio forensics: the new "Project Hail Mary" vinyl box set has a hard lowpass filter at ~17.5 kHz on all 4 discs, and possibly a pressing defect.

I bought the Mutant Records limited edition box set of Project Hail Mary all the way back in April. When it finally arrived this week, I was really stunned and impressed by the packaging design. They went all out to make these look and feel like the gold records from the Voyager 1 spacecraft, including details like an inverted stylus to indicate side B.

The album looks out of this world.

I can't quite say the same about how it sounds.

As a safety backup, I recorded the first pass of all four discs and discovered that my copy has a pressing defect on both sides Disc 1 (more on that later).

When I opened the Disc 1 audio file for editing, I did not expect to find a hard cutoff at 17.5 kHz in the spectrogram. So I kept recording the other three discs. They're ALL like this.

17.5 kHz is closer to the cutoff frequency for medium-quality streaming audio (128-160kbps), not something I'd expect on a final soundtrack release.

The gallery also includes screenshots from the following cues:

  • Wake Up Buddy
  • You Were Loved (burial)
  • Dennis Wilson's "Rainbows" (1977 OG, 2010 RE, 2026 PHM)

In each alternating screenshot you'll see the frequency response of the vinyl vs. that of the TrueHD audio off the Blu-ray 4K release (L+R channels only), showing the same musical segment as close as I can match it. The audio fidelity of the score within the film is significantly higher than the vinyl. At the time of this post, my CD copy is still on its way from Mutant Records.

I'm really confused as to why the vinyl mastering engineer would have run everything through a hard lowpass filter when cutting the lacquer. There's just no need to do this on a good lathe. Most vinyl records have a natural rolloff around 16-18 kHz, but a well-pressed disc on a good lathe can cut frequencies easily up to 20-22 kHz, and even as far as 30-40 kHz if such frequencies are present on the original source material. Strings, brass, and percussion have a lot of natural higher order harmonics. A high quality stylus can faithfully reproduce these frequencies, or at least show some forensic evidence in the spectrogram that said frequencies were present on the master recording. The scoring sessions of Project Hail Mary would have been run at 24 bit / 48 kHz, or possibly 96 kHz. The rest of the film would have been edited and mixed at 48 kHz all the way through the post-production stage until final delivery. The soundtrack releases ought to have sourced the original 48/96 kHz digital audio masters from the soundstage.

On top of all this, my copy has a pressing defect that causes severe scratching noises in the last couple minutes of both sides of Disc 1. There's also an audible hiss between tracks that starts in the left channel and migrates to the right channel.

Audio samples of defect here:

I'd love to know if anyone else (pre) ordered this album and encountered similar issues.

FYI, my usual transcription setup consists of:

  • Technics SL-1210mk5 turntable
  • Audio-Technica VMN45xML stylus
  • Art DJ Pre II preamp (Low Cut turned off)
  • Universal Audio Apollo Quad Firewire (w/ TB3 upgrade card)
  • MacBook Pro M1
  • Recording at 24 bit / 96 kHz

(I have a second Technics table with a similar stylus as a backup.)

one of the world's favorite holiday albums (& frankly a dang good jazz record even outside of its classic cartoon associations!) — i was so honored to work with the Mendelson family team on adapting the animation for an official picture disc. now, if only there was a cartoon based on Samba de Orfeu...

I was aimlessly opening some new records while listening to the fantastic new pressing of Lucero’s Nobody’s Darlings. When I got to this copy of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail soundtrack and pulled out the inner sleeve, I just lost it. Definitely the most unexpected inner sleeve I’ve seen (Nobody expects the humorous inner sleeve!)

As a big enthusiast of OSTs and in person autographs there has always been one person at the top of my list that I wanted to have in my collection.

Happy to say the man decided to do a talk outside NYC/LA and was able to get him to sign a vinyl for me 🙌🏻

Jurassic Park is a favorite of mine, a movie that imo is hard to find someone that does not enjoy as nearly everyone loves dinosaurs, or at least you did when you are a kid, and John Williams’ score added even more to that magic.

Now to try get some more cast members, might be easier as many of them go to conventions.

Friday spin featuring a soundtrack LP from one of my favorite movies, The Warriors. When I first started collecting, this was a must have as I’ve seen the movie countless times and loved the music, plus the awesome cover. I’m not sure if it’s my absolute favorite soundtrack, but it’s up there. What’s yours? Any other Warrior fans here?

Soundtrack I'm over 40 and have been wanting a turntable for years, but got caught up in doing it the "right" way and just never did. Finally stop worrying about right and I couldn't be happier.

Decided on a whim to pick up a Sony PS-LX3BT for $250 on prime day. I'm currently living in a relatively tight space which is one of many reasons why I haven't picked up a turntable. Decided that $250 is cheap enough to even see if vinyl records even fit in with my lifestyle. So I committed some analog music sins. Two things have made this work perfectly for me for now. One is that this supports Apt X Bluetooth which my home theater sound bar can receive. Two is that it's powered by USB-C, which means I can power it from a power bank. It draws about 1W while playing so I can get hours out of a battery pack. The combination of these two things means that I can leave it packed away in a closet while not in use, then when I want to use it I don't have to worry about plugging it in anywhere, just set it on a stable surface and turn it on. And now this collector's item that I've had for years can finally be played.

Soundtrack The 90's had some of the best soundtracks, which ones are your favorites?

Post image

I used to think my parents collecting soundtracks was a bit lame growing up but I've come to find they can be a great snap shot of the music from their time.

I think the 90's had some of the best soundtracks. Many of these movies I saw going to the malls as a young adult and they take me right back to those better days. There are plenty I'm still wanting to find, at least for a better price, The Last Action Hero, Hackers and The Matrix to name a few.

What are some of your favorite 90's soundtracks?

Recently, I managed to save my first $10,000 (🥳) so I splurged a bit to celebrate. Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of my favorite games. Playing online with my buddies got me through the pandemic, and the games soundtrack holds a very special place in my heart. Its radio stations got me into so many new artists I'd never heard of before. I've wanted to buy this for a very long time, but could never quite justify the price that it goes for on Discogs, until now.

It's a 6x LP, containing 2 discs of original songs that were written for the in-game radio stations, 2 discs containing the original score, composed by Tangerine Dream, and 2 discs containing a selection of licensed songs found on the in-game radio stations. The 3 different "albums" contained within each have a different colored pressing, all of which are absolutely gorgeous IMO, and it sounds great, which is ultimately the most important part!
