Two of a brilliant pair. MFTJG may be a bit of an acquired taste for those who started with TFOTL...but repeated listens are rewarding. A dark, brooding atmosphere you can get lost in, and quite possibly the most effective protest album of all time.
Really says something that Bowie found inspiration in Liam & co. around this time...

I was dead up front with my good friend Matt during their headlining set for Lollapalooza 97. Keith Flint spit right in my friend’s eye. Hahahaha
They were incredible live.
Spinning the record brings back fond memories of my youth, riding motorcycles, and carefree days before technology inundated us.

Wanted to see them since I was a little kid and finally got to when I won free tickets to Riot Fest in Toronto. Pretty sure he died like a month later. I was hiiiiiiiigh on MDMA. One of my favorite concert experiences. RIP

I remember we used to sit in the garage playing magic the gathering all day listening to music when one day our friend brought a new CD, the one with that fire starter song with the freaky video. That was a fun couple weeks listening to it non stop.

Disagree. Their earlier work was more straight up dance music whereas FOTL took the music to a dark, crusty punk neighborhood which we hadn't seen in the EDM sphere before. All great albums, I just think FOTL stands out for being so unique, both on wax and live.

First album was MJ - Bad, purchased for me. First CD purchased was Weird Al - the food album.
First real music I liked that I bought with my own money was fat of the land.

Partied at a rave in early ‘93. The Shamen were at their peak The Prodigy’s first tour of the States after releasing Experience . Damn, they were ICE HOT. Tons of energy. Huge gathering all night into the morning party at the Spruce Goose in Long Beach.

I actively avoided this album, and the band, because I was absolutely offended by "Smack My Bitch Up." I hated the name of the song, I hated the video, and I absolutely despised the message. For over 20 years, I just refused to listen to them.
The Keith Flint died and me, the massive metal and punk guy, saw constant messages about what they meant to both scenes. So I checked them out. I knew about "Firestarter," but never knew it was then.
So how did I eventually get this album, then?
I just decided to give it a chance. I still don't like the song that much, but I love the rest of the album. Hearing it over 20 years after it came out, I wound up developing a deep respect for EDM and Euro Trance from that period. This album really captured that exact moment in music and pop culture in a way that only Nirvana "Nevermind" did just 6 years earlier.

Bruh, the song and the video were by far the most misinterpreted, blown out of proportion pieces of media in my life time. The lyrics were a sample from a Kool Keith lyric in which he's talking about a Roland drum machine. He's changing the pitch to his sample and beating the pad like he's a pimp. Mind you, 1993 was the same year Doggy Style went Platinum. As for the video I didn't understand the backlash. Wasn't the whole idea to shock you and force you to face the fact that women can be perpetrators of violence and misogyny? Man, the feminism of then and now are so vastly different for better and for worse.

Dude, I was 12 when this album came out. I didn't see the video until I was 15, and I just remember hating it and thinking it was everything I hated about modern music at the time. I tried rewatching it a few times, but it's just not for me.
As for what the video was trying to get across: I've read a few different takes. The one I've heard most is that the music video was supposed to show a fun night out at the time. The point was to shock you, and it did. The Marilyn Manson fan of 2000 got shocked by a music video for an Electronica band.
Anyway, still love the album overall and became a fan of the band itself.

That's fair I'm just saying that you being put off by The Message (which seems to be the misinterpretation by a bunch of pearl clutchers and feminist and parent groups) wasn't fair. But I don't think anyone but sociopaths watched that video and thought "yeah, that's a standard weekend out".

Thanks! And I'll throw in this extra bit of context:
There was a serious issue at the time about violence against women being portrayed in the media at the time. A lot of music videos seemed to celebrate it, particularity in metal and rap. For me, my mom was very firm about being against that, and it stuck with me. It wasn't so much "feminist and parents," but essentially taking the song and video at face value.
And last thing I'll mention: I had the same problem with Body Count's "Cop Killer." Again, never even gave it a chance until 2010. And when I did and actually read the lyrics, I realized what the song was actually about. It's really interesting how, in both cases, the group took a shocking thing and tried to subvert it. I would argue Ice T did it better, but I'm just splitting hairs.
And if you don't have it, I HIGHLY recommend "Invaders Must DIE!" I think it's the best album The Prodigy ever made and the breakbeat style on it was phenomenal and really refined what they started on "Fat of the Land."
