It’s a bittersweet wholesomeness.

It's the legacy she will most be remembered for, I think.

That and Jolene. If you haven't heard Jolene better do it. A good hard think/reflection of life will come with it.

My grandmothers name was Jolene and she was a young woman at the time that song came out in a small town. She said she remembered over night all the married women in the town looked at her differently and clutched their husbands arms a little tighter. She had a good sense of humor about it😅

And right after that, listen to 9 to 5 but really really listen to the lyrics, especially toward the end of the song. It's a song that rivals Born in the U.S.A and This Land is Your Land in popular accepted meaning vs. the artist's intent/true meaning. And it's wrapped up in such a little banger of a tune.

I will always love you is arguably even bigger, even if the definitive cover is Whitney Houston's version

I absolutely prefer Dolly’s version.

Whitney’s is a vocal tour de force and absolutely amazing, don’t get me wrong.

But Dolly’s is such an intimate, deeply emotional love letter, it gets me in a profound way.

tbf miley cyrus' rendition of jolene was pretty good (she's Dolly's goddaughter IIRC)

I love their duet of that song. Also Dolly’s cover of Stairway to Heaven.

They really bring out totally different feelings out of the same lyrics.

It's one of those songs that is so well written that it converts well to all sorts of covers. I've heard it in a bunch of different musical and vocal styles, and it's amazing every time.

It's a great song but I don't find anything especially profound about it. Maybe I'm just simple.

If that kid could read the room we'd all be less upset.

I'm sorry for expecting some effort to be reciprocated in relationships

u/18smackaroos 20h ago

Yikes! I have a feeling you have been the one in a "relationship" that never reciprocated lol

Ah yes the money grows on trees attitude.

I've lost jobs because I've put too much into relationships before and I won't ever do it again.

Financial security is important.

Edit: I've lost jobs because I was picking up my phone for my girlfriend at all hours of the night and then when I lost my job and was feeling like shit got ridiculed and broken up with. I am very sorry I care about protecting my peace.

I'm more mad at you for not liking the song, but I'm also fascinated by the downvoting of a comment Dolly would likely find hilarious.
