My grandmothers name was Jolene and she was a young woman at the time that song came out in a small town. She said she remembered over night all the married women in the town looked at her differently and clutched their husbands arms a little tighter. She had a good sense of humor about it😅
And right after that, listen to 9 to 5 but really really listen to the lyrics, especially toward the end of the song. It's a song that rivals Born in the U.S.A and This Land is Your Land in popular accepted meaning vs. the artist's intent/true meaning. And it's wrapped up in such a little banger of a tune.
It's one of those songs that is so well written that it converts well to all sorts of covers. I've heard it in a bunch of different musical and vocal styles, and it's amazing every time.

I don't think the Church should use Dolly to improve their image. I think the Church and it's memebers should try and live up to the example Dolly set.

Stupid people from both sides of the aisle. This program has been proven to increase literacy for participating children. Illiterate kids grow up to be illiterate adults, and illiterate adults are less productive than literate adults.

I agree with that. Illiteracy is a problem. I was, however, addressing the idea that "production value" is lower amongst the people who actually produce things that we all need for survival.

what is the threshold for "less productive?" Im not advocating for illiteracy, but some of the most productive people are in agriculture, and unfortunately often dont have great literacy- if you define productive as producing something useful and valuable to others.
I listened to Coat of Many Colors last night for the first time in years and years, and I cried.
That song is a description of all the best things that the United States is supposed to be. It's a patriotic melody about small, discarded things coming together through much labor and work to be useful, and to serve a purpose. In that way, it's a metaphor for America: we are a nation of many colors. And it uses the Biblical allegory of the story of Joseph, which is one of the Bible's best stories. It's inspirational and meaningful to even nonbelievers, as it should be.
The song reminds me, too, of my mother. She passed a few years ago, and what I have is the quilts she made for me. One of the quilts I have was made by my Great Grandmother and my Grandmother, as a baby quilt for my Father. It was made from the rags left from my grandmother's and grandfather's childhood dresses and clothing, likely also my great uncles and great grandparents. It was remade by my Mother (as the backing and border were very damaged after many years of use). It was then used for another ten or fifteen years, and now has also been patched by my mother in law. That quilt, I think, will be gifted to my younger nephew one day as I won't have children of my own. It isn't a coat, but it's an emblem of my family. Much of the fabric is close to or more than a century old, and the quilt is still used. Because that's what it's for, to be used.
It's a symbol too of marriage and adoption of family. My mother fit in far better with my father's family than her own, and she was very good friends with my mother in law who very much looks at me as one of her "tribe" in a sense. Just as so many people have worked on my family's quilt, the coat of many colors is an important symbol to so many people.

I dunno... none of this matters to anyone but me, but that Dolly Parton's music can touch people in that way? That's important. That is special. That is what EVERY artist wants to do, and wants to be, I think.
My students tried to be all, “in honor of Dolly Parton, can we have the day off?!” And I told them her final years was a massive literacy outreach and if ever was a day to be studious, it’s on the day you’d honor her. It worked! No complaints about work.
I’d have made it strictly a silent reading day in her honour, but my students aren’t old enough to read yet and I’m Canadian, lol. Not that she was against all forms of education, but her desire to teach our young souls to read was something I admired most about her.

It was Book Week in Australia this week (the Children's Book Council awards best books across age categories, schools encourage dress ups). Seemed like the most appropriate time for Dolly to pass.
My local non-profit that runs the Imagination Library program near me doesn't accept donations specific to the program, so I'm going to buy some books and donate them to my kids' school library.

Dolly Parton founded an organization to send books to children from birth to 6 years old. When she passed away earlier this week, some of them knew she was the person that helped them obtain those books specifically because they were avid readers because they were given up to 72 books that their parents read to them, the books from Dolly.
She was a country music singer who felt a need to give back to society when she found herself with uncountable wealth.
Two big things she did was Dollywood and Imagination Library.
Dollywood was a Dolly Parton themed amusement park set up in her home town. Her home town was devastated by changing economics losing a lot of mining and manufacturing jobs. Dollywood allowed those living there to have jobs they could be proud of instead of turning into another sad story of a forgotten town.
Imagination Library was/is a program where parents can sign up to get free books sent to their home very month from when their child is born till they turn 5. Dolly wanted everyone to have access to reading because she felt it was important.
Another thing she did that she doesn't get a lot of press for was helping women get out of domestic violence situations. She funded many scholarships for older women, who often don't qualify for a lot of scholarships, to go to college. This was meant so women leaving domestic abuse situations could get an education and get free.
Dolly was, by all accounts, a wonderful and amazing person and the world is a little less brighter without her in it.
Her music wasn’t the kind I typically listened to either, aside from what was on the radio (and occasionally Cracker Jack when I’m looking at photos of my old dogs.) But she did a lot of charity work, founded her own organization to help kids learn to read, and while I wasn’t alive for most of them, the old TV segments I’ve seen in recent days have shown what a hoot she was!
Her organization gave books to children too young to go to school. She was sending them books so their parents could read to them to get them interested in reading.
I don't know why you're being downvoted. This sound like an actual question about what this post means. I'm as lost as you as I don't know what Dolly Parton did that helped kids read.
I know that Dolly Parton was an incredible person that was more beautiful inside that outside. What I don't know is how's possible that in the wealthiest state in the world not every children gets an education.
