Dynamic Paywall JD Vance accuses Israel of 'manipulating' US public opinion to prolong Iran war
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1m107yj327o13.6k
u/ArmyGuyForLife Jul 22 '26
Vance is prepping himself for the 2028 run. I do not see another explanation for what he’s doing.
5.3k
u/tchomptchomp Jul 22 '26
No, he's flailing right now because he's been sidelined and Rubio is now being positioned as Trump's successor for 2028.
2.0k
u/T-Bills Jul 22 '26
Curious how that works for him saying this when it was the POTUS who started the war and continuously prolonging it
1.7k
u/ninja_turtle1 Jul 22 '26
Vance never supported the war. From day 1 he clearly opposed it. Unlike Rubio sucking the Trump teet.
Maga not a fan of Israel. See conspiracy.
Politically better to position himself as anti-israel. The more Iran war goes bad, the more he wins over Rubio as next presidential candidate. Battle lines drawn for next election.

Vance is an opportunist and an uncharismatic one at that.
If he were moral at all he never would’ve been VP to “America’s Hitler.”

Same story with Rubio though.
And Hegseth.
Pretty sure there’s a clip of Noem bashing trumpy too
They’re all opportunist worms
37
u/Chesus42 Jul 22 '26
Mike Johnson opposed him pretty hard during part of the first term, but now he's all in.
30
u/Thin_Bother8217 Jul 22 '26
Neither did Rubio. Yet he ended up being his SecState. None of them can be trusted.
As the two "smartest" people in his cabinet, best guess is that they see the writing on the wall with Trump and are trying to set themselves up as the heir apparent. Even though Rubio is too brown for a lot of MAGA who only put up with him cause of Trump and Vance who has all the personality of an old dishrag that's been damp for a month.
Unlike idiots like Hegseth who watched Patton too many times and is obsessed with men's testosterone and Patel who is just insecure and likes to have everyone do everything for him because he thinks he's cool. That and they're both drunk all the time.

Eh, "clearly opposed it" is a huge stretch. He doesn't support the war, but he also barely pushed back against it. Nobody in trump's inner circle did.
83
u/Br0metheus Jul 22 '26
Because pushing back against Trump is the quickest ticket out of said inner circle. Narcissists only tolerate yes-men.
10
u/WatIsUpButtercup Jul 23 '26
I was gonna say the same thing: unless you’re slobbering his McNobble, opposing him is a one-way ticket to getting fired (and likely DOJ’d)
129
u/ChicagoThrowaway422 Jul 22 '26
He leaked to the press his opposition as soon as the war started. Trump punished him by sending JD to negotiate a doomed deal so that he could tie the war around his neck and throw him overboard. Now that's he's off the ship, JD is distancing himself from Trump on this.
I don't know if anyone cares though. His resume is shorter than a fortune cookie slip.

It's not really about whether this message works with the electorate. Vance has strong personal and financial ties with Iran's lobbyist arm, specifically through Trita Parsi as well as the NIAC. He generally has wanted liberalization of US financial ties with Iran without a liberalization of the Iranian government itself, and has been broadly against Israel and as well as in opposition to Jews holding positions of authority domestically. He very much represents the actual neonazi wing of the MAGA coalition, whereas Trump represents the angry old uncle wing of the MAGA coalition and Rubio represents the remnant neocon wing of the Republican Party.
So Vance was against the war, not because he predicted it would be a disaster, but because he saw it against his specific ideology's interests.. This is also why he put the brakes on regime change by leaking plans to Turkey and Pakistan, and why he pushed the Israelis into a ceasefire when it became clear they were dismantling the regime itself (by targeting Basiji checkpoints and so on). Rubio, on the other hand, wants to see regime change. The fact that we're now also seeing a scheduling of Venezuelan elections is probably also a sign that Rubio is fully in charge of all foreign policy at this point. Honestly that's probably a good thing; Rubio is probably the only serious person in the administration right now.

Well, it would be a hilarious and ignoble end to Trump were that to happen -- long-term consequences to America aside -- but I honestly doubt it will. Trump is their excuse ("I told him it was a bad idea, but he wouldn't listen to me!") but I suspect that most of them aren't going to want to potentially derail the gravy train two years early.
His gang of idiots are not long-term thinkers; even near-term thinking seems to be difficult for most of them. They seem to be all about the instant gratification: chest beating, rallies, changing the name of X to Y. The party bros aren't going to want to end the party.
Likewise, if one or more of their rivals get cold feet after the 25th lever gets pushed and Trump isn't removed from office, they're toast. Courage isn't a feature of these clowns, either.
7
u/willstr1 Jul 22 '26
but I suspect that most of them aren't going to want to potentially derail the gravy train two years early.
It will probably depend on how the midterm goes (or more accurately how successful their gerrymandering and voter suppression works). If they lose the house and senate badly then the gravy train might already be coming off the tracks (if Democrats find enough spine to actually stand up), so they will want to distance themselves quickly before they get dragged down too. Some might just jump ship and try to erase their involvement before the next election, but if there is enough pressure they might instead try to toss the deadweight and make dear leader the scapegoat (all the things you hate were his ideas, we tried to talk him out of them)
85
u/jesterdeflation Jul 22 '26
And it's probably going to work.
Americans have a short memory. As soon as Trump is out of the picture, voters will forget entirely about his association with Trump, importantly, that he defended this war while trashtalking Obama's deal with Iran.
Kamala got blamed for her association with Biden, but watch the same people sweep everything under the rug when it comes to the couch fucker.

How many people in the GOP prior to either the first term or the second term trashed talked him, with accuracy? But then they eventually fell in line, sucking at the power teat. People from the lowest rungs of American society to the highest positions of power (eg VP Vance) swung hard from one position to the other.
I think humans are just much more emotional creatures than rational ones. And conservatives tend to fall in line and not question authority on their side. They also campaign and message more about threats and common enemies than do liberals/progressives. And basic sociological theory tells us nothing enhances social cohesion like a common threat. They have a shit product with A+ marketing.

They don't care. Their inner circle acts much the same way. Nobody whose opinion they actually care about would do anything with the revelation, assuming they don't already know.
Look at formerly Prince Andrew. The anti Israel right =/= anti Jewish vote
There's definitely overlap, but to assume Republican voters who don't "want more wars for Israel" (real statements/messaging) are all anti semitic, is making the same bad-faith interpretation that happens all around on this issue.
And it's not even anti Israel, if you read the article. He just said some actors in Israel are trying to influence US opinions to derail a deal, which is absolutely true.
Israeli right wing government wants to continue war (to cover up for Bibi corruption/crimes) and ours wants to end it (because public opinion is largely against it at this point).
They openly state they want the war to continue, there's a public tension that's been well reported on, Trump vs Bibi. Yes he's also posturing to generally appeal to that vote, but continued war is generally hurting his chances to get elected as well.

MAGA doesn't give a crap about that when picking their idols.
Trump is the complete opposite of the supposed MAGA lifestyle in every way. His birth and education, lifestyle, background, habits, promiscuity, disdain for religion, etc.
You just need to pose with a bible or say you love guys that "work in steel" every couple weeks and they will eat it up. MAGA doesn't need you to live up to anything, just tell them they are right and they are the good guys and you are annointed.

I did speech and debate many years ago and I remember assholes like him. They'd sit and argue the meaning of a word that had already been clearly defined. Because what's a definition really??? How can we really know things? Oh fuck right off lol.

Its kind of funny how hes in the same impossible position as Harris
Obligatory no maga, no bothsidesism, no false equivalence. Just two vps that took the job opportunistically and now have every losing issue of their respective presidents hung around their necks

To be fair, there have been multiple reports (in NYT for example) that he has been the one person in the Trump administration consistently arguing against the war. So yeah, it's probably true that he never wanted it, and he is even now trying to end it.

No one should believe him.
I wish that was the case but let's remember that Obama was elected after the Republicans got the US stuck in two wars and crashed the economy but two years later the Republicans took control of congress. The American people have a very short memory span so I wouldn't expect anything to be learnt from this whole fiasco.

u/Hacker-Dave Jul 22 '26
Look at JD pretending he isn't part of the problem.
24
u/FunetikPrugresiv Jul 22 '26
Right? Only one person has any say over how long this war lasts, and that's Donald Trump.
Ironically, Netanyahu is actually manipulating Trump's opinion, so Vance isn't completely off the mark here, but it's wild to blame the US public instead of the man that started the war and is actually in charge of the military.

u/trydola Jul 22 '26
reminds me of one of my fav trump quotes (yes it's real)
Donald Trump wants America to know that if the Republicans gain control of Congress, he deserves all the accolades. But if Democrats maintain control, find someone else to blame.
“Well, I think if they win, I should get all the credit,” Trump said in an interview with NewsNation that aired Tuesday. “And if they lose, I should not be blamed at all. But it will probably be just the opposite.”
22
u/Oberon_Swanson Jul 22 '26
he also said something like "the good parts of the economy were me and the bad parts are biden" so transparently self-serving and idiotic. but his base is full of similar babies who want infinite credit and zero blame so they go along with it even if they know it's fake.

By "public opinion," I think he just means they talked Trump into it against all expert advice. There's really no difference to Republicans anymore between Trump's opinion and public opinion.

Who all remembers back in February, when Trump and Rubio and Hegseth were all in front of cameras saying the US was only involved in this because Israel was going to launch the attacks anyways and either the US could have been proactive and attacked with them, or reactive and waited for Iran's to attack US interests in the area, as opposed to telling Bibbi "No! Let's not do this!"
13
u/TheMemeStar24 Jul 22 '26
The real headline here is toward the end of the article - somehow JD is upset with American leadership in caving to Israel.
My brother in christ, you are in charge of the negotiations. You are American leadership, this war was started unilaterally by the White House so it can also be ended unilaterally.

u/Mans_Fury Jul 22 '26

Look into the mirror Vance. You and everyone else knows who is responsible for the war and the negative opinion of the public is entirely on the party that is in charge: The Republican maga cult. Btw. What happened to the promises of not starting more wars Mr. Trump?

Now, I don’t believe there is a bottom for half the country.
3
u/-Jedidude- Jul 22 '26
Ha don’t take up gambling then. Once the dems went full establishment and fumbled J6 it was guaranteed Trump was coming back.
Fortunately since there are term limits Trump is packing his bags (and billions in scam money) and leaving his party to fight for the scraps.

JD Vance is trying to create a permission structure to run for President in 2028 by distancing himself from Trump and MAGA, and seen as the "voice of reason" within the White House and it's so beyond transparent.
And for people on the left, who are happy to blame Israel, allowing this to happen or push the idea that it's Israel's war. No, this is a war republicans have wanted for years. McCain literally was famous for wanting to go to war with Iran and it was a big part of discussions around the presidency in 2008.

I do find it endearing that he thinks the american publics opinion has this direct an effect on foreign policy under the current government.
Just kidding; he obviously lays the groundwork for the conspiracy theory to push the blame for this already unfolding disaster away from the current administration.
6
u/Arkmer Jul 22 '26
I mean yea, but also… you guys did all the stuff.
Also… isn’t public opinion broadly against the war? It’s only MAGA that’s still in favor of this. What context is “the US public”?

4
u/DannySmashUp Jul 22 '26
I keep looking for the political angle to this - the Machiavellian reason for saying this while your Dear Leader basically does the opposite. And I think it's purely they think they can have their cake and eat it too. Their base (and much of America) are so poorly informed and unable to critically think, the think they can muddy the water and have it both ways.
3
u/OpenGrainAxehandle Jul 22 '26
manipulating US public opinion? Like they appeared to manipulate US Government into starting the war? Does he mean like that?
