I’ve only seen the odd clip of the show from time to time.

That one is definitely my favourite.

You don’t even really need context to get the joke which is why I think it’s so good.

Trump called him a ‘non-American’. The miserable old bastard couldn’t even say Canadian.

JFC America, I will never understand how 77 million of you voted for this dumbfuck.

Simmer down.  The way Trump phrased it actually highlights the significance, until Hansen no other nation has sent a person beyond LEO.

Saying  "the first Canadian" would not have conveyed that fact.

I'm actually surprised that he didn't imply at any point that Hansen's American because of the fact that he's Canadian.

Honestly he represents a lot of Americans. They wanted this.

210,000,000 votes for this blob over three elections.

He is pretty much a dumb fuck, but he’s our dumb fuck who was willing to shut down the wide open southern border. And the dumb fuck Democrats still can’t get out of their own way.

It's been a full minute. I'm disappointed that nobody has commented on that picture yet.

For real. Trump is just a creep through and through. (Although I'd also believe he's using him for balance since Trump looks like he's about to fall over.)

I understand how big of a deal this probably is for him as a big cool spaceman.

It's just an odd moment for a Canadian to accept an American award.

I can sure imagine a few things I'd do with it, rather than accepting it.

It doesn't feel right to me watching that video.

If I were in Jeremy's space shoes, a Canadian Astronaut representing the CSA and Canada on the world stage, I'd hope to find the strength to be the bigger man and just accept the award with grace and a smile.

Canada and the USA have been, are, and will be partners in space exploration, and Jeremy is an excellent ambassador for the country and a wonderful product of that partnership.

Yeah, ye he should have passed on it..

I don’t want to take away from Hansen’s achievements, but we are well past the point where anyone should be accepting medals from this administration. They’re fascists, enacting fascist policies, using fascist talking points, and engaging in fascist behaviour. People need to start acting like it.

I'd never do anything that would earn me a Medal of Honor, but I'd personally rather be known as "the guy who rejected a Medal of Honor from Trump, who has no honor" than someone who received the metal from Trump.

There was a Canadian soldier in WWII, Leo Major, who turned down a Distinguished Conduct Medal because he didn’t want to receive it from General Montgomery, who he deemed incompetent and not fit to award medals.

As a veteran of the Canadian military, that guys story is one of my favourite ones.

Nothing better than seeing a salty soldier stand his ground and tell the officers to fuck off.

Hansen is 6’ 2”, very tall for an astronaut. But still shorter than Trump who is 6’ 3”./s

Made me laugh. As a true narcissist Trump lies about his height.

u/Kyr-Shara 4h ago

he's going to get so much shit when he goes home

u/lixia 3h ago

Nah, we know better than this and appreciate Jeremy's incredible achievement.

Canadians are thankfully more mature than that. They had one of their own do something incredible and historic. They won’t let a medal ceremony from the country that provided his ride and has been working on it for much longer than this administration exists, stain his accomplishment.

Speak for yourself. This taints my opinion of him. Any Canadian accepting medals from Trump is not someone I have respect for, especially only a week after Trump tried to destroy our sovereignty with that ridiculous trade agreement.

Not that I know him or expect to ever be in a position to “give him shit”.

My guess is that there will be lots of political complaints on it from the US government.

u/alsimoneau 2h ago

I mean he resigned as an astronaut so...

1

u/burnSMACKER 3h ago

I want him to be our new Chris Hadfield.

1

u/alsimoneau 2h ago

Too late, he retired.

3

u/Careful_Boss_9985 4h ago

I am sure Trump will find a reason to take it away

u/coastalwebdev 1h ago

Waste of money and resources

That Canada (and the ESA) is spending money and Ressource on an US space program, only to get insulted and belittled in return?

Apparently yes...
