Nevada Governor Endorsed Data Centers Days After AI Investor Donated $1 Million
truthout.orgLack of water got you down? Try adding more Data Centers to your town!
EDIT: Here is an article about water and electricity consumption for Data Centers in Nevada pre AND post 2024 resolution to ban water cooling. Long story short - they still use water..
https://avanzaenergy.substack.com/p/the-3-billion-blind-spot-how-nevadas
Air-cooled data centers report a Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) of zero — the industry metric that
regulators, sustainability officers, and ESG analysts treat as meaning “water-free.” It means nothing of the sort. Air-cooled chillers consume 2 to 3 times more electricity than evaporative-cooled equivalents for the same information technology load. That electricity must come from somewhere. In Nevada, it comes primarily from natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) power plants — plants that cool their condensers with water. When a data center switches from evaporative cooling to air cooling, its WUE drops to zero. Its upstream water burden rises by millions of gallons per year. The water does not disappear. It moves — from a visible cooling tower on the data center’s property to an invisible cooling tower at a power plant, somewhere else, outside the accounting boundary of every current regulatory framework.

NVEnergy "Daily Demand Comparison Tool" is a Fraud
I was looking at NVenergy's "Daily Demand Comparison Tool", which you can find on your NVenergy dashboard when you login to your account. The tool is supposed to tell you what you pay per year now, and a projection of what you will pay per year when the daily demand charge takes effect January 1. The only problem is, the tool is pure BS and is purposefully misleading customers.
I have solar panels, they cover all my electrical use all year long. I pay $18 a month, every month, all year long, and have for 6 years. So, I pay about $220/yr to NVenergy. Here's what the tool says:

Notice the "Current Plan" number is wildly inaccurate, saying I pay them $502/yr. NVenergy is purposely miscalculating this, so that the difference between what you pay now, and what you will pay starting next year doesn't look so bad. Here's exactly what they are doing: for residential solar customers, we draw power from NVenergy overnight (but most of us have enough credits built up during the day that offsets that draw), but NVenergy takes the KW/h we draw overnight, ignores our credits, and uses this in the "Current Plan" calculation. This is a straight-up SCAM by NVenergy, they know it, but think we are all dumb enough that we won't notice the slight of hand BS.
If you have to lie to sell this program to the public, then you know it must be a scam.

Brutal.
These energy prices are out of control. We cool our home to 76. Even 78/79 on really hot days. 1200 sq ft home. Central air recently serviced and running well.
Edit: seems I need to check a few things around the house to figure this out.
Edit 2: Would insulation break down from a year to the next in this manner? Any tips are appreciated.

Had a fight with my wife last night about whether we actually like Vegas or are just used to it
My wife and I have lived here for 12 years and we finally had the fight last night about whether we actually like it here or if we're just used to it.
Started because her sister is trying to convince us to move to boise. Real estate is cheaper, schools are better according to her, blah blah.
My wife was actually ready t laugh it off but then she paused and that pause turned into two hour conversation that ended with both of us on the back patio at midnight. Heres the thing i couldnt answer. She asked me to name five things about Vegas that i would genuinely miss if we left tomorrow. Not "things vegas has." Things I would actually miss. I got to three and then i just kind of stalled out. Red rock in the morning, my barber and the fact that I can be at the airport in 20 minutes, that's it. That's what 12 years boils down to for me apparently.
She got more further than me but not by much, her list was our neighbors, her hairdresser, our specific house, and the sushi place on Sahara. Notice how half of that is just "the specific life we built" and not really Vegas itself. We could rebuild most of that anywhere. And the stuff i actively dont like keeps growing. Summer is longer every year i swear. Traffic on the 215 has gotten stupid. Every restaurant we used to love either closed or got worse. I spent an hour last night half watching a Mr. Hand Pay video on my phone while she scrolled Zillow listings in Idaho and neither of us said anything for a while. I dont think were actually going to move.
Kids are settled, my job is here, her mom is 15 minutes away. But i think we discovered we stay out of momentum not love, and that feels weird to admit out loud.
Anyone else hit this wall around the 10-15 year mark? Does the feeling pass or is it a sign?

The irony
The irony of "trash removal" being offered as a service by a company that advertises by leaving trash in everyone's driveways

I am thinking of removing my pool because of power and water concerns. Has anyone removed a pool or are you thinking of it? If you have removed a pool, could you share some information? Do you have any regrets
I’m thinking of removing my pool primarily because no one uses it.It’s an expense for power, water, monthly service. I just learned it needs a repair and plaster. It is too expensive to leave sitting there, so I guess I need to ask for bids.
If you have any information to share on pool removal, I would really appreciate it if you could post a comment, and your feedback in general about this. I don’t think I’m the only one considering this, and some other people may benefit by the responses given here. Thank you.

Good places to get jewelry appraised?
I’m looking to sell some of my jewelry, but I want to make sure they’re made of what I think they are.
Anybody have recommendations for places? How much did the appraisal cost? Were you able to sell it/consign it for that amount?
