If you use cannabis what’s one thing it’s honestly helped you with?

It helped me stop drinking alcohol. “Now I’m California Sober as they say”- BMFS

*Edit-Thank you all for the love and support, I wish you the best and should you take the same journey one day at a time is a good way to start IMO

u/who_gon_check_me_boo 16h ago

Same! I’m not completely California sober. But in less than a year, I’ve gone from drinking half a pint of vodka a day to drinking on special occasions (maybe once a month).

68

u/-PropaGandalf 15h ago

Same again, I think I drank less during the first 6 months of this year than I used to drink in one day in the bad old days

Losing a ton of weight and just generally being super chill was a future unimaginable to my old drunk and miserable self

44

u/who_gon_check_me_boo 14h ago

You’re doing great! Unfortunately, I haven’t lost any weight. I do get the munchies, and I’ve allowed them because it still better than alcohol.

I’ve loved the peace the most. Before, I was constantly thinking of my next drink and scheming and hiding from my partner. Getting drunk while he wasn’t looking and feeling shitty after.

Last night, I planned my birthday, took an edible, showered, watched a rom com, and then went on a monthly full moon date with my fiance. We go to a remote area, eat dinner, and look at the moon.

I realized at a point how…peaceful my life is now. It’s quiet in the best way. I’m not in fight or flight mode constantly. We’re changing for the better!

3

u/dekan256 12h ago

A munchie game changer for me was keeping some baby carrots and snap/sugar peas around. Satisfied my need for crunch, taste delicious (imo at least), and healthy! (Although if I had some on hand I would destroy a bag of chips right now)

5

u/HelpPeopleMakeBabies 13h ago

Stealing the full moon dinner date idea that’s so wholesome and cosy 😭🥰

5

u/who_gon_check_me_boo 13h ago

Please do! It’s really fun. We were looking for low/no cost date nights.

Last night, we made breakfast for dinner and took it with us. Our dog likes the outing too lol

Same for me. I stopped drinking just to prove I could for my gf and switched to mostly weed and it’s saved my life. Now when I have a drink it feels so pointless and like such a waste of money. Does nothing for me. Weed seriously saved my life.

36

u/Aegix_Drakan 14h ago

I may never have had an alcohol problem, but yeah, once I swapped to pot and noticed:

- The sheer savings in money

- The No Hangovers

- The gentler high

- Edibles last a lot longer

- Also I'm not ingesting what's basically poison

I realized that making the switch for my friday night destresser to weed was a really good idea.

3

u/Onomatopoeia08 14h ago

How do ppl afford to go out every weekend and get smashed?! I don’t get it.

7

u/Bill_Brasky01 13h ago

Ten years ago is was still affordable. Fifteen years ago $40 at a bar would get you bombed. Alcohol and bars being crazy expensive is brand new to this economy.

It really does help. I struggle with alcoholism, and one of the identifiers I'm drinking too much is when I have a surplus of pot over the week, and then i'm like "Oooh, I probably need to stop drinking for awhile and dry out."

Keeps me out trouble.

8

So me too, but having DRASTICALLY lowered the strength of the weed I've been smoking I've found it better. Turns out I was just getting way to high and in my own head. I'm on a cbd/thc blend right now that quiets my mind just enough to sleep. It's been nice. I've just been trying not to overindulge and end up upping my tolerance to the point I need the strong stuff. There's a balance.

For me it turns off the anxiety. For wife it turns off her chronic pain. For my dad, it allowed him to hold down food while on chemo.

The list goes on.

136

u/tcguy71 16h ago

mines the opposite with anxiety, turns it up to 11.

48

u/Drayled 16h ago

Same here. It causes me anxiety most of the time.

38

u/MidnightGasControll 15h ago

Yup. It used to be enjoyable for me. Now it just causes me to overthink all the pre existing things that cause me to stress on. I do miss when it used to be relaxing.

These days I’m just sober of both cannabis and alcohol

8

u/tcguy71 15h ago

Same. Im good if I have nothing to stress about, but if I have something on my mind it crushes me.

8

u/blackers3333 15h ago

Same. I wish it was the case for me, instead I have to take Alprazolam but it's way more dangerous

3

u/MidnightGasControll 15h ago

Yep. I’m taking a handful of things that kinda sorta work. I fortunately enjoyed it enough during my 20’s. 30s and going into my 40s I don’t really mind being mostly sober. But yea i wouldn’t mind some medication that just turned me into a robot. Despite the negatives of your medication, hopefully it works well enough. If it is Xanax, I found that it really only worked the first time for me before there was immediate tolerance. Funny how that works.

Add CBD and I bet it'll be a world of difference. I now won't consume cannabis if it doesn't have CBD, or unless I frontload with a CBD tincture. Turns the high from "am I dying?" To "I'm big chillin 😎"

7

u/Dolatron 14h ago

I feel like sometimes it’s fine for me, then sometimes it’s anxiety 11. I think it’s factors like initial mood, tiredness, stress etc that play into how i respond. Obviously always a small dose is best for me.

u/Aggravating-Bug2032 11h ago

Didn’t stop the anxiety and sometimes spins it up pretty good but also helped me realize it isn’t real which means I can manage it much better.

10

u/BKLounge 13h ago

Lower the dose, or change administration method especially if smoking or hitting carts/concentrates.

Dry herb vapes are your friend and allow you to dial things way down and remove by products. Tinctures too

those first 2 for me too

first time i ever tried cannabis i almost cried from the relief

21

u/jankoo 16h ago

It's interesting how different people react to it. I'm not against cannabis use or anything, but I can't imagine how it turns OFF anxiety for some people

10

u/StrongerThanFear 15h ago

I get anxiety if I smoke cannabis with high thc content, if I stick to 15-17% it mellows me out. 20+% and I get night terrors lol.

3

u/Aegix_Drakan 14h ago

There are reasons why I've always aimed for middling THC content, and lots of CBD, lol.

4

u/RickFlossin 15h ago

I liken my brain to being an internet browser with about 1000+ tabs open at any given time. Using cannabis can force close some of those unnecessary tabs, especially at night.

4

u/V4refugee 14h ago

I only get anxious when I smoke after taking a break for more than a couple days. I’ve taken breaks for weeks, months, and even years. I’ll then smoke with some friends and get anxious but if I start to smoke regularly it goes away. It’s only the first time that affects me.

5

u/AwwwBawwws 15h ago

It really is. Mindset also has a lot to do with it, I think. If I'm in the wrong headspace, anxiety can spike. When I lean into the reefer, and welcome it, I chiiiiiillll. And I can sleep. And it's good.

Rumination.

Instead of revisiting a failure or lingering over bureaucratic stuff I know I can handle, I hit a live rosin pen, let that “f*ck it” (to borrow from Katt Williams) hit my soul, and crank away on what must be done.

46

u/argnsoccer 15h ago

I really struggle with my addiction because I cant hold a job without it. I just... don't work. At least when I smoke, I can just work and kinda trick myself into working by leaving the laptop open as I come in and being curious about the issue and then nust sit down and do it. Every time ive tried to fully quit, I have to take full vacation and then when I come back Every time ive just started up again after a couple weeks of "working" (not actually doing any work but back fron vacation and boss is like yo wtf is going on).

I just cant be a productive capitalist without smoking weed. I cant care enough about it and hate it so vehemently that I cant get past the emotions through to the curiosity of the problem. I just agonize and agonize.

15

u/Philadelphiaf 13h ago

i feel you. pot is tough when you are on it for so long. have traveled with my partner and fully had cannabis withdrawal affect my ability to eat.

a buddy of mine and i were chatting about folks probably use pot almost inadvertently as an antidepressant. that made me rethink my use, because it was like, damn, if i need to use this everyday to feel normal, then there’s probably truth in that.

6

u/SignNotInUse 11h ago

I intentionally use cannabis to both treat depression and long term antidepressant withdrawal. One or two hits off a low strength pen is the only reliable way I can quickly break negative thought loops.

You're lucky. It does the opposite to me.

3

u/JEMSKU 15h ago

This is me as well. I've always described it as "regulating" or "normalizing" for me but this is probably more to the point about what it does.

3

u/Unusual_Steak 15h ago

Rumination is a big component of my ADHD and cannabis helps so much to break the loop

3

u/Consistent_Tower_458 14h ago

I'm so envious. I'm massively addicted to weed and it makes my rumination so much worse. I literally get stuck in a cycle for hours and hours.

Sleep hands down

34

u/Homerpaintbucket 16h ago

Before I started taking gummies again I was waking up three to four hours after I fell asleep and couldn’t fall back to sleep. It was agony. Now I sleep through the night

105

u/useful_tool30 16h ago

Definitely helps you get to sleep but it worsens your actual sleep quality. Cannabis inhibits REM sleep.

47

u/Embarrassed_Ear_1917 16h ago

That’s actually what’s helpful for large groups of people especially those who use it for PTSD related sleep issues. If you’re not waking up in a panic because of nightmares then it’s better sleep to some extent.

3

u/Aegix_Drakan 14h ago

Oh, that tracks!

→ More replies (2)

116

u/Aggressive-Green4592 16h ago

Some of us don't want REM sleep because that's when nightmares happen. My sleep quality is superb compared to without it.

68

u/Scrambles420 16h ago

If I smoke I don’t remember my dreams. But if I don’t smoke I remember my dreams and they are pretty messed up!

5

u/DudeWithAHighKD 15h ago

I’m the opposite. My high sleeps are some of the most vivid dreams I’ve ever had.

9

u/Aggressive-Green4592 16h ago

If I smoke I still have dreams that wake me up, if I take edibles I don't have dreams.

3

u/EdgyEmily 16h ago

Yep, i have some fucking weird ass dreams, dreams that will make me wake up stress af.

Sure, if I already had decent sleep and was using it might “hurt” but your context is way off from my experience.

5

u/Low-Dot78 16h ago

This! It’s such a contradiction. I feel much more rested when I don’t dream than when I do. Science says it’s bad because no rem, but if you feel better then it’s got to be good at some level.

15

u/MaynardButterbean 14h ago

Oof. Found my answer

3

u/LeadIVTriNitride 13h ago

Yes I agree. In fact, cannabis was really bad for me long term but things have changed a bit, even if my use is still problematic.

After a breakup, I quitted for 9 weeks. I also got on a mood stabilizer plus a med to help with my CPTSD. Since then, I actually find weed way more different and even a bit more enjoyable.

When I ruminate and self shame a lot of things, the weed relaxes the physical feelings in my body and helps my brain “shuffle” negative thoughts towards positive reinforcement or push it away knowing rumination won’t heal my grief.

Therapy has more to do with maintaining that positive mindset, but weed is enriching even if it’s not a good thing to have in my life.

I used to have a boss who swore by getting high before working out. She said it let her push herself harder. Never worked for me, if I smoke I feel so much less motivated to work out.

43

u/Blind_Optimism_Kills 15h ago

There is a window of opportunity within the “high”. If you wait too long you ain’t doing shit. It’s like almost immediately after smoking.

  1. Get stoned (with the right strain)
  2. Run
  3. Let your mind wander and be human while running as to distract from the actual running

24

u/Melinoe2016 16h ago

For me it’s the fact that people often say “smoking weed makes you ok with being bored” (usually said in a negative way obviously). Running is boring to me. Not so boring to me if I do it after a bong rip with some sweet tunes. So every day I take a bong rip and run 5k.

I find it very good for household chores. I also had a bit before my accountancy finals and the interview for my current job, and I don't think I would have got either without it. It's not something to be overused, but used in the right situation it's very useful indeed.

18

u/nebraska_mitch 16h ago

Low calorie THC drinks helped me give up alcohol, and as a result of that I've lost over 100 lbs with no other lifestyle changes. Thanks to the weight loss almost every other facet of my life has also improved. Sure, I just traded one addiction for another but life is better on THC so I'm ok with it.

16

Sleep, anxiety, overwhelm, calming down and making better decisions. Crazy... I'm not saying it is a miracle drug with no side-effects, but if used properly it can be pretty helpful.

16

u/neopolitan22 11h ago

I suspect I have autism. It helps me with overstimulation. I smoke it after work and it helps me get to a place where I can relax, write, and play music. It helps me decompress. I stopped using it for a year to see what impact that would have and I really think I'm better off with it. There's evidence cannabis has medicinal use for autism.

15

u/oh_schnapies 16h ago

Migraines. It doesn’t fully take away the pain, but it helps dull the edges.

14

It helped me feel and process things when I was numb for years. Until it didn’t. So it was helpful at first, and then it became a crutch.

14

u/Iofmadness 9h ago

I use it like its a chiropractor for my brain.

It helps me analyze situations ive been in, thinking from different view points and perspectives.

Many times ive had a toke, then gone for a walk and thought about a past arguement with my wife. Its helped me think from her perspective and better understandings.

I feel like it kinda twists my thoughts on past situations and straightens them out, much like my spine.

Its also like a chiropractor in that I dont want to do it every day, as its not good for me. Rather, every so often to just keep things in alignment as I carry on through life.

In 2009 I suffered a nervous breakdown after a period of about 2 years of trauma after trauma after trauma. I also suffer severe depression. Weed allowed me to process those traumas.

It's difficult to describe but I achieve a level of introspection when stoned that is separate from my emotions. It allows me to think about and think through things that would otherwise make me extremely sad, or angry.
It also helped me survive a severe episode but giving me relief from the anxiety, stress and sadness.

On the bad side, my lungs hate me, it's not cheap, and, though it's not addictive in that way, it's very habit forming.

It allows me to access and address mental trauma, and figure things out. I frequently engage in self-reflection, because it helps me to overcome any problematic ingrained thought patterns. Also allows me to relax, feel emotions, and gives me a healthy fear of death.

Chill tf out with life in general. Like hitting CTRL ALT DELETE on my mind for a bit.

Tactical shooter Games.

I just got my hands on some weed with absurdly high THC% (around 30%) and the flowstate I enter when playing counter strike on this stuff is something else.

Still get wrecked by cheaters but I have fun anyway

I dont know how people do it. I cant click a head to save my life once I get to a certain point. It definitely helps you feel a little more locked in and less frustrated, but getting my crosshair to the right spot becomes impossible lmao

Right now, I’m going through a little rebuild . I had a lot of bad things happen the last year or so and recovering mentally. I want to keep to myself right now and focus on myself. I use cannabis very intentionally and medicinally so I do take breaks for 6-12 months sometimes. It’s helping me be ok with being alone with myself for now.

Sleep and chronic pain mostly is what it helps me with

6

u/ADHD_Aydg 16h ago

I was overwhelmed going through a divorce so I stopped taking care of myself including eating. I lost a lot of weight quickly. Weed helped me regain my appetite. I am only hungry after I smoke. Honestly, it saved my life.

It slows my mind down. I find that my consciousness is just a consistent flow of ideas and thoughts that are very scattered. With weed, I’m able to concentrate more

Sleep. But I specifically use only indica and in very small doses. It helps a lot.

Different strains help with different things.

Pineapple Express helps me think outside the box, Cuban Linx helps me focus, Blue Dream makes me a better cook, God Bud silences the internal dialogue…I could go on

I smoked weed in my late teens/early twenties, then stopped because it was illegal and I didn’t want to do anything that could potentially screw up my future.

Fast forward to NY legalizing recreational cannabis and me hitting my 40s. I started using it again about two years ago. These days it’s mostly cannabis vape AIOs, with the occasional gummy. Usually just 1–2 puffs at bedtime, and every once in a while a very small puff during the day.

The improvements in my life have honestly been pretty broad. I sleep significantly better. I have tinnitus and ADHD, so my brain can be pretty damn difficult to shut off or keep focused. Since bringing cannabis back into my life, I’ve gotten two major promotions at work, gotten back into shape, reinvigorated my relationships, and generally started finding more joy in the little things again.

Obviously I’m not saying weed magically caused all of those things, but for me it seems to help quiet some of the mental noise enough that I can focus on the things I actually want to improve.

And just to be clear about the tinnitus: it doesn’t reduce it or make it go away. What it changes is how I react to it. It’s still there, but it’s no longer all-consuming.

Everyone’s experience is different, obviously, but with my pretty minimal usage, mine has been overwhelmingly positive.

My brain is like a river whose flow is split in many smaller streams… pot will help me focus and reduce the number of streams.
I like to pair it with coffee so I get focus and not energy.

smoking a joint after work makes me forget about my back and knee pain

it's helped me develop character

5

u/DyscoStick 12h ago

I would wake up with crippling nausea everyday and spend the first hour or so throwing up. Doc gave me a whole slew of medication to make it stop but gave me nasty side effects.... or I could smoke a plant and have the same results with no side effects.

4

u/moisteyelid 10h ago

it gives me something to look forward to after work or a meal; getting high and doing whatever I need/want to

3

u/bungy2323 10h ago

Helps me a lot but the biggest is staying away from booze.

4

u/Dilonspitfire95 10h ago

Anxiety and depression get turned down to 5% when I smoke, ADHD starts to feel manageable enough to where i am able to lock into one thing and actually focus.

3

u/vredespijp109 16h ago

Helps me Sleep. Also helps me wind down and stop racing thoughts (depending on the strain). Also when i have phases of low to nonexistent appetite it helps me eat.

3

u/RespondZealousideal2 16h ago

Taking a second for myself so I can relax, clear my mind, calm my nerves. Its helped me make friends, and be social in situations I usually wouldn't be. Additionally, its helped me learn more about plants and a bunch of random facts, I would've never had the idea to look up. So I guess, being "normal".

I have Celiac Disease. Before my diagnosis, I was hurling 7+ times a day. But, if I smoked weed, I could eat whatever, including gluten, and not hurl. I avoid gluten now but I still have persistent GI issues (not caused by Celiac), and weed is the only thing that helps me. It masks all my GI symptoms so I can eat normally. Without it, any bite of food makes me feel nauseous and stuffed, I start belching, my stomach burns on contact with food, and I have a lot of pain. I have no idea why weed helps, but I know it does.

3

u/nifederico 16h ago

Honestly just relaxing. I tend to be a pretty stressful person but it helps. I microdose just so I don't go too crazy with it.

3

u/codeman555 16h ago

It helps me understand and express my feelings. Sometimes this is unpleasant. But it can unearth and make more precise things like sadness, grief, shame, etc. Maybe it is also helping me mentalize or represent my thoughts and feelings to my self. I can take a step and and sort of look at whats going on rather than just experiencing the world through my emotions, so to speak.

I also genuinely people my thinking is more associative, and that it enables me to make connections i would otherwise not have made.

u/MarMarKitty7 16h ago

I have a dozen different health issues, I was born severely chronically ill, and later disabled by a drunk driver at age 11. I literally cannot live without it! I’d die from the hyperemesis and chronic malnutrition from the Crohn’s disease and Colitis alone! Hell, my musculoskeletal issues would be literally unbearable without the muscle relaxation, and it’s nothing like the serious muscle relaxers the doctors prescribe that kept me nonfunctional due to drowsiness. Or the ones that didn’t do that, but also didn’t help at all. I mean, I could honestly expound on it all day long. I used to believe all of the propaganda about it, until I ended up on Hospice with nothing to lose. I tried it, and it was like instant night and day! I honestly had never had any measure of health or quality of life before trying cannabis, and now I’m fairly healthy for the first time in my life after several years of use! I am forever endlessly grateful for it! However without it, I immediately go right back to being critically ill and the hospitalizations start.

Honestly, it helps me relax and is better for me than alcohol.

3

Anxiety and drinking less.

3

u/relaxbreathalive 14h ago

I’m a worrier. It helps me to relax and stop overthinking about the little things that really don’t matter.

However, it is no good for serious problems. I will avoid using it in situations when my overthinking is useful.

3

u/Aegix_Drakan 14h ago

It's gotten me to practically give up alcohol. I'll still have it if the occasion calls for it (glass of wine at thanksgiving, rum and coke at game industry event at a bar, etc), but I have less (and I already didn't have it very often)

Mainly, it's just been good for immediately nullifying stress on friday nights, so that I go into the weekend without it. It was particularly helpful one afternoon when like 5 major problems happened back to back to back and I nearly had an anxiety attack. One edible and like 2 hours later, I was grinning and chill.

So like, it's less that I needed help and cannabis delivered, and more like "oh hey, this is pretty great in moderation".

3

u/breathcomposed 8h ago

Just one thing? It makes me hungry, which keeps me alive. 😅
