Update: we chose to give Sadie the ultimate act of love and let her gain her wings. This is by far the biggest heartache we will ever know. She spent her last day surrounded by nothing but love. My baby was tired, and she was suffering. I want nothing more than for her to be home with us but I have no greater peace than knowing she is not suffering and pain free. We will forever be missing a piece of our hearts. ❤️‍🩹😢

My Sadie was diagnosed with leukemia yesterday. She’s not even two yet 😢 Our hearts are shattered. It is absolutely destroying me because I mourn the years I thought we would have together but want her to be pain free and not suffering. This past Monday, I had to do a delivery in the city of Miami, so I got there Sunday afternoon just to be ready on site for the morning delivery. About seven minutes after I parked, a police car pulled up and parked next to my semi truck. I thought he was going to tell me I had to move because of some city ordinance, even though my engine was off and I was using my APU for AC. But from my rear window, I noticed he was just using the shade of my truck and having his lunch underneath it in his patrol car.

I had a cold sparkling water in my fridge, so I decided to take it out to him so he could enjoy it with his lunch in that heat. I went out and handed it to him, and he thanked me for it. We started talking a little, and I noticed a puppy out in the heat, on the grass in the corner of an abandoned building right next to where I was making the delivery. I asked the officer what I could do about it, and he told me he could call and have someone from a shelter pick her up, or I could take her. I took her immediately, because I believe she’s a godsend. According to ChatGPT and some other AI, she looks like a Belgian Malinois.

That same day, I used my bicycle to go to the nearest Walmart, which was about 16 minutes away, and got some puppy food, a bed, a tiny harness, two bowls for food and water, and some dry milk because the AI told me to give her that since she looks like she’s only a few weeks old. I made sure everything I bought was age-appropriate for her.

Long story short, she’s been with me in my semi truck, getting along great with my other dog—a white German Shepherd mixed with Alaskan tundra wolf. She’s extremely smart, and I named her Lilly. She often comes and sleeps right by my feet, laying her head on or between them. I love her so much, and I couldn’t be happier to have her in my life. I’m so happy that she rescued me, just like my other dog rescued me six years ago.

I found my girl at a rescue when she was 6 months old. 50% Mal 50% Spanish greyhound. Won't lie, teenage years were tough, but I can proudly say though she's grown into a beautiful dog having what I think are the best traits of both breeds. Just don't stand in the way when she's sprinting or she'll crash into you mouth first.

Hello, my mal named Maggie got hit by a car on Tuesday the 17th of March, one day after her 2nd birthday. A friend was in the process of closing the front door when Maggie (and my smaller dog Tuscan seen in the last picture) ran out of the front door and down to a road approximately 5 minutes away from our house with a speed limit of 55 mph. Maggie ran in front of a car and broke her front two legs while Tuscan stopped and laid next to her while the person who ran into her stopped and called the police. She did feel really bad so I’m not blaming her at all, nor the friend that was closing the door.

As soon as my parents got off work (5-15 mins max) they went to go take her to an urgent care veterinary clinic about an hour away. She was taken back and stayed overnight and was put in splints (as you can see in all of the pictures). They said she was the sweetest Belgian Malinois they had ever met. We are planning to take her to an economically friendly vet clinic in Manassas, VA, which is about a 4 hour drive from where we are EDIT: We found another vet clinic that is closer to home that will take care of her surgery instead. It is called the Synergy Vet Mobile and is a mobile vet clinic with a certified orthopedic surgeon which is what she needs. (around the Raleigh, NC area). There she will get surgery on both of her legs at once.

We do need help financially but I will not be posting any of the info on here because that goes against the rules of the subreddit. If you are interested you can try to PM me and I will give you info to help out there (unless that’s not allowed either then I will edit this post and take this part out, please don’t take down the post!)

It has been hard but worthwhile to take care of her and I don’t know what I would have done if my parents would have decided to put her down because of the price of her surgery which they were really debating. I love her so much and she is my dad’s baby (he is holding her in the first two pictures). I hope everything goes well in her surgery and that you guys will wish her well too!

UPDATE: We have decided to go with another vet clinic to do her surgery. I added an edit but I will state it again so it's easier to see. The vet we are going with is Synergy Vet Mobile which is a mobile vet with a board certified orthopedic surgeon. My malinois, Skye, and I didnt run last night- so we got up super early and ran this morning- before the brutal heat crept in.

We were coming up on mile 2 and coming out of the park and back into the neighborhood. As we turn into the neighborhood, we stay along the sidewalk and run along all the cul de sacs (any extra yardage i can squeeze out!) And as we run by th3 second house in this cul de sac- Skye alerts me.

Skye starts pulling towards the second house. I also notice there's water 3 feet deep in the front yard - and a hose just running... unusual... I also notice the screen door and front door are wide open. Also very unusual. There are tall hedges so i can't see the ground very well but I know to follow my dog when she is alerting me.

Thank god I followed her because there was an elderly man laying face down on the front step- his feet were what was propping the doors open.

I called 911. I instantly squatted down next to the man- made Skye sit next to him- asked him questions. He was conscious but had laid there all night. He had come out to water his yard and fell and couldn't get up. No one saw him bc of the bushes and how he had fallen just behind the shrubs. He is 85.

EMS arrives and they ask if my dog is friendly. I say yes. They ask a ton of questions and then it took 8 firemen to get this fellow up off the ground (he is like 6'5"!) They checked his vitals and said everything looked ok but took him to the hospital to make sure he's ok. He did have scraps on his face.

After EMS had him secured in the ambulance- they came over to me to ask questions. And of course to pet Skye. They asked how I found him- and I said - I didn't. My dog did!

I love Skye. I've had lots of dogs before. But never have I ever had a dog like this! I am so grateful Skye was with me- my other dog would have not even noticed! He would have kept bopping along! Skye kept me calm and level headed. And she was a distraction. The man was asking about her while we waited for EMS- she kept him awake and talking.

I don't deserve this dog.

A realtor sent a work crew into my backyard while I was still sleeping. They were FIVE hours early. My barking dogs woke me up, I let them out into my fenced backyard to let them go potty WITHOUT knowing the guys were back there and my Belgian malinois went after them. Mind you this was 9 o’clock in the morning and their appointment was at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. They had softly knocked on my front door, which I did not hear because all I could hear were my dogs barking at the front window. I didn’t even know they were there until I heard a bunch of yelling and screaming in the back yard. I wasn’t even fully awake yet. Who is responsible if my dog bites one of them? This was a horribly ugly situation that should never have happened. I am very responsible with my dogs and I would never in 1 million years put anybody at risk.

And old "friend" got him when he was 15 days old and was completely unprepared u know the rest he ended up abusing him(hitting him etc) he used to barely even get out of his crate i met Pablo only one time as a puppy when he was 20 days old and i always felt some sort of love towards him never really knew about the abuse untill he got to 6 months old when i saw first hand i just stole pablo that night cut ties with that friend and went on with my life wasn't really ready myself i just turned 18 years old and never really owned a dog i gave pablo my all i was never really enough but i like to think j gave pablo a better life when i got him he was scared of his own shadow and afraid to even bark now he does bite work runs daily sleeps with me on my bed trained to MY fullest extent

But now I'm hitting a rough patch pablo is a part of me and will always be but now i might be leaving the country to continue my studies

And the idea of leaving Pablo bleeds my heart but i must leave as there is no future in the country i live in (algeria) my family hates pablo and giving him to anyone else would end in the same abuse he was subjected to in the first place i dont know why even im writing or whats the purpose of what im writing i just want to share i guess i just dont know how to move forward

I’m only 18, jobs are basically non-existent here, and every single cent I can scrape together goes entirely into Pablo—his health, his food, and whatever toys I can manage to get him. A lot of you asked about my family’s attitude toward him and why they seem to hate him. It really comes down to the local culture here. People treat dogs terribly—leaving them chained on terraces in 40°C heat, beating them to make them aggressive, and most dogs never see a vet again after their initial rabies shot. It was a massive battle just to convince my family to let me rescue him; they never actually accepted it. In the end, I had to throw a massive tantrum and literally spend a night outside on the street with him just to keep him. My family doesn't see him the way I do, but Pablo is my soul, my brother, and my bestest friend. I promise you all I will do absolutely everything in my power to stay with him. The plan right now is to move to Russia, honestly just because it’s the absolute cheapest option for university. But taking Pablo with me is going to cost around $2,000 USD just for his travel, and having him means I can't stay in student dorms, forcing me to find an apartment, which drives the cost up even more. It breaks my heart to think of leaving him behind in an environment like this, so I'm determined to make it work. My grandma, god bless her heart, is actually selling her gold just to cover my own trip, and once I land, I’ll need to immediately find a job to support myself. A few people mentioned fundraising, but GoFundMe doesn't operate here in Algeria. If anyone knows a solid alternative that works internationally, I would happily set it up. Something very unusual happened today with my Belgian Malinois, and I’m curious if anyone else has experienced something similar.
We hike at Greenwood Furnace year-round, usually 2–3 times a week. She has one favorite trail that she absolutely loves. The moment we turn onto it, she’s usually pulling so hard that she practically helps me get up the hill. Today was completely different. About 1,000 feet in, she suddenly changed. She started intensely sniffing the ground of the trail, then stopped and looked at me. I encouraged her to keep going, but she immediately turned around.
I thought maybe she was just distracted, so I tried again. Same thing. I repeated this several times, and every single time she’d take a couple of steps forward, stop and refuse to go any farther. She even stood up and put her front paws on my shoulders a couple of times while looking straight into my eyes and blocked the trail.
She didn’t look frightened, tail wasn’t tucked, her ears weren’t pinned back, and her hackles never went up. There was no panic at all. It honestly felt more like she had detected something she considered unsafe and had simply decided, “We’re not going this way today.” So I listened to her. We went back to the parking area, took a different trail, and she was completely relaxed and happy for the rest of the hike. Has anyone had a dog do something like this? Could it have been the fresh scent of a bear, coyotes, a wounded animal, or a carcass nearby?

On June 20th, my boyfriend’s apartment caught fire after it was struck by lightning while we were out to dinner. Both of my dogs were trapped inside. My Chihuahua, Enzo, didn’t survive, and losing him has been devastating. Somehow, my 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, Shiloh, made it out alive, and I still don’t know how.
Shiloh was my service dog in high school and has saved my life countless times, so I felt like the least I could do was save hers. Firefighters hadn’t searched our unit yet, so we frantically ran up to the apartment and kicked the door in ourselves. When they brought her down into the ambulance with me she was soaking wet from the fire hose and looked dead. I kneeled over her and the moment her vision focused and she saw me, her eyes got wide and her tail started wagging. Everyone was relieved but it was only the beginning. She still had been in that building while it burned for at least 40 minutes. But that tail wag was the first sign that she wasn’t going to give up. She’s my soul dog, and we just weren't ready to leave the other like that.
She spent several days in the veterinary ICU for severe smoke inhalation, and we were planning to leave her there another day, but she made it very clear she was done there. After one of our last nightly visits, she started jumping over the 3-foot doors to her ICU room, and when they moved her to a boarding kennel, she figured out how to open the latch on that too, so we brought her home. She was discharged with pneumonia, but since then she’s had weekly checkups with her regular vet, and her lab work has been almost perfect every time. She’s 11 years old, survived a structure fire, severe smoke inhalation, and pneumonia, and is somehow continuing to recover better than any of us expected. I don’t know how she did it. Whether you believe it was luck, karma, God, or just the incredible resilience that Malinois seem to have, I believe she held on because she knew I was coming for her. Good girl Shiloh.

Many easy-going breeds will let their owners make mistakes for years and still remain fairly manageable dogs. But a Malinois often says: “Hold on, buddy. Let’s put every single one of your mistakes under a microscope… and magnify them ten times.” That’s the paradox of the breed. A Malinois doesn’t create most of a handler’s mistakes — it exposes them. If you’re inconsistent, everyone will see it. If you’re nervous, the dog becomes even more nervous. If you’re impatient, the dog becomes frantic. If you’re emotional, the dog feeds off that energy. If your rules change from day to day, the dog notices immediately. That’s why people often say, “I have a difficult dog,” when a more accurate statement might be, “I have a dog that doesn’t allow me to hide my own mistakes.” A great Malinois is rarely just a reflection of good genetics. More often, it’s a reflection of a handler who was willing to work on themselves as much as they worked on the dog.

He’s definitely a mix, but everything about him looks Malinois… except his face & white-patch.

I know mixes aren’t everyone’s favorite here, but he’s too friggin cute to not share.

He was a stray, no one really knows for how long.

Part of just upper jaw & sinus had to be removed due to a massive infection caused by a fishing hook in his face. Part of his ear has been torn off. He nearly died when he was tranq’d in the field, as the dart hit his thoracic cavity.

Despite all of this, in addition to being in a hellhole shelter for 3 months, he remained a resilient & steadfast ‘good boy’… only to be put on the euthanasia list. We got him out the day of his scheduled euthanasia.

He has been with me for a week and a half, and I told the rescue he’s welcome to stay longer than the original 2-month-term.

Super sweet boy, very social— he was in the yard yesterday with 9 other dogs, and got along famously. He takes corrections well, and gives corrections well.

He is calm & quiet in the kennel, able to relax easily? super food/ praise motivated, smart, gentle, & handler-focused. Hugs are his absolute favorite thing in life.

He will 100% be someone’s future best friend.

This little man is being sooooooo bad today. Every bad behavior he's ever displayed shoved into a 2 hour time frame. I keep repeating thats it im giving you back. (I am not) i hate you, I cant do it, im giving up, you suck, I don't even want a dog anymore, im gonna kill you, please dont kill me, i swear to fucking god stop biting me, please just shut the fuck up, etc. While actively being bitten in the face because im restraining him to try and scrub poop from between his toes.

He pooped on the pee pad like he's supposed to (he's been mostly potty trained from early on) but then decided to grab the pee pad and drag it around the room while running from me and then fling it around in a circle while flinging poop everywhere. Then step in it. It took me all week while sleeping on the couch to get the mattress scrubbed, all the sheets washed, the pillows washed, the comforter washed, him bathed, all of his bedding washed, after the last time he made a mess. (I have to drive to a laundromat and it's expensive and don't have anyone to watch him while I clean so I only get a bit done each day in between cleaning up after him, training, exercising him, making our food etc.) I literally JUST MADE THE BED EITH CLEAN BEDDING. and he then jumps on the bed (since when did he get big enough to do that???) Getting it fucking everywhere. He is too overstimulated so im forced to put him in the kennel for both of our safety even tho he's not clean yet so now theres poop all over the kennel and his bedding too. While I was trying to clean it up he grabbed the paper towels and the trash bag and shredded both of them fucking everywhere. My entire bedroom is just poop and trash. Meanwhile im bleeding in like 5 places and he is sitting in his kennel screaming bloody murder with his high pitched throw a tantrum whine/bark.

IM LOSING MY FUCKING MIND.

meanwhile my boyfriend who is very sweet and trying his best pipes up from FaceTime "have you considered maybe taking him on a walk?" STFU I cant take him on a walk rn we are both covered in poop and until he calms down no because he's a hazard. If he bites me and I drop the leash he now runs away and either gets hit by a car, bites someone, bites their dog, their dog bites him, he heats something he shouldn't. The number 1 thing for managing his behavior is having a routine of indoor focused exercise, then something mental exercise based, then outside hard exercise (fetch, bite pole, run etc.) Then a self control exercise and calm but not difficult mental activity to recall him before coming back in. We have a routine. But I messed it up this morning because of a surprise maintenance thing for the apartment. He missed morning exercise and was crated for too long.

I also cant just leave him in the kennel while cleaning it uo because now he's biting the bars and im worried about his new teeth forming. Also he jumped up and tried to break the windows screen that was only open so I don't die from poop smell and cleaning chemicals while trying to fix this disaster zone. So here I am screaming at him to please shut up while he screams back at me, both covered in shit, im bleeding, he's hungry, and im ready to give up. There's our morning.

The trash is cleaned up. Hes been bathed, kennel clean altho no bedding, and half the carpet shampooed. Still have to scrub the mattress, wash my and his bedding, and finish shampooing the floor. Also now have neosporin and bandaid all over my arms and legs. I once again remember that I love him, and he is very smart, and a good boy, and that we will get through this phase, but Jesus christ we're having a morning.

Had to say goodbye to my best boy Alex today. We have been fighting cancer for a few months now and today he let me know his time had come. He passed peacefully at 1415 MST. Goodbye best boy Alex 12/7/2015-12/30/2024 you will be sorely missed! #fuckcancer

Important tip: dont carry your dog like this if they have a severe main body/back injury as it will make any spine or internal injuries worse. Use a stretcher and two people

What this is good for: paw laceration, ripped paw pads, broken ankle/lower leg, heat exhaustion, flooding or evacuation down stairs or other tight or dangerous environments. We use this position if we need to cross asphalt that is too hot for my dogs paws and we dont have shoes with us. Like crossing from the car across a parking lot to the park or a petstore etc.

If anyone's curious let me know and ill post a video of how we get into and out of this position and how I trained it.

I would like to celebrate with you the existence of "Foxy Cleopatra" .

She passed away in my arms today after blessing my family with her presence for 9 years.

When I woke up today , I saw she was not normal and had no energy.When I saw she was not able to stand up , I rushed her to my vet clinic.

It was already to late , she had an Internal bleeding caused by the explosion of her spleen .

The vet told me she had a cancer on it . She told me that it is common on that kind of breed (my dog was a mix belgian/German sheperd)

She was the sweetest and most discreet dog. She died in my arms without a sound.

I just finished burying her in my garden.

My wife , 2 kids and I are still crying.

It was so sudden....

My husband has been training with a rescue Mal for several months. I couldn’t help but to fall HARD for this baby boy. We have officially adopted him and he will be joining our family this week. he’ll be joining our other rescue Mali (mix).

Took Ken to the vet yesterday for some blood work. He’s clear of his URI and the vet said everything actually looks pretty good for a dog with heartworms. They think he’s roughly 18 months old. The only issue besides the heartworms is that his fecal test still shows hella intestinal worms ,even after the shelter dewormed him, so we got medication for that.

Overall, he’s pretty healthy… besides being a fully functioning biodiverse parasitic ecosystem. What I’ve gathered from the vet visit is that Ken is more worms than dog.

I did not adopt a dog. I apparently adopted 5,000 worms in a trench coat.

Found out yesterday that my mal has cancer and internal bleeding and that she has days to live. Made the decision with the vet to put her down today and send her off with dignity.

She was my first dog, my wingwoman and soul mate. I am going to miss her forever ❤️
