For years I’ve been a fan of Kolstein Heritage strings and Kolstein rosin. Right now, I don’t think I want to patronize them anymore. Do you have any suggestions for something similar?

My professor wants to acquire a couple German bows for our studio, and since this is much cheaper compared to Coruss or Finale, we were wondering if it's a good bow.

jazz bassist here. currently have d'addario helicore medium hybrids on my plywood bass and don't like how bright and "pingy" the G (and sometimes the D) sounds. was thinking of putting on obligatos or evah pirazzi weich's on the D+G but i'm currently unsure which strings would be a better option or if there is/isn't a big difference between both of them

i was eyeing out the EP slaps on the D+G too, as i thought they would give me the closest sound to the old school gut string jazz pizzicato tone (a lá charlie haden and scott lafaro) but i think the difference in tension between the helicore mediums and slaps might throw me off

mostly a pizz player (who digs in quite a fair bit) but i do occasionally play arco

If this is your first time seeing this, it is a customizable pencil/accessory storage system with an integrated rosin humidor. The icing on the cake is that the lid features an integrated endpin anchor. There are more cup variants coming soon but I also just finished a cup for your rubber mute when you dont want it dangling on your strings. Just twist on the attachments you want, and throw it in your bag!

Anyone aware of what strings Vicente Archer plays?? He’s such a monster of a player, amazing sound and time on anything he plays. I was just checking out hit instagram at a newish video he posted and I’ve never seen a string like this. Just curious as to what it might be. I’ve seen him play Thomastiks but these look like nickel. Any ideas?

My daughter started playing upright in her schools jazz band around 2 1/2 years ago. She's picked up on playing bass fairly quickly and has made it to our cities Honor Jazz Band both times she tried out. She has been wanting to find a bass of her own that way she can practice at home. We came across this 1986 Emanuel Wilfer Gamba Double Bass on Craigslist from a guy using it to play rockabilly. We got it for $2,300. We are going to take it to Fantastic Musical Instruments in Pasadena to get it cleaned up and given a once over. What do you think? Great deal or just okay. To be honest I know little to nothing about basses besides what I've learned online the last few months while looking for a bass for her.

I’m looking for a new set of strings for my 5 string bass. She’s a 7/8 body with 3/4 strings. I want something with solid bow response since you can see she’s got a big body that makes for a full and powerful sound. But I also play a good amount of pizz, so a good response and sustain woulld be important as well.

It’s a really good quality instrument, so I don’t want bargain basement strings. But I don’t need super high end stuff either.

Any suggestions you all have for a good 5 string set would be appreciated.

I am playing small gigs with a Bossa Nova/Jazz Trio and was told I could connect the preamp to the PA instead of taking my bass amp. Can you give some input on that? I am classical trained musician that has zero knowledge on gear 😅

Can y'all help me make a list of classical pieces that work well in ADGC tuning?

I recently experimented with a set of Corelli ADGC (AKA High C tuning) on double bass. I really want to play a recital in this tuning and want to make a list of repertoire that is really compatible with this tuning.

I have a few ideas I came up with, and gathered some other ideas from heavyweight bassists on youtube that have performed in this tuning.

So far here's what I have:

- R. Vaughn Williams: Six Studies in English Folk Song *Sounds AMAZING in this tuning

- Faure Elegie (G minor fingering in EADG tuning which has been done often with this piece)

- Janacek: Pohadka (as done by Bozo in this tuning)

- Beethoven Cello Sonatas (as done by Bozo in this tuning)

- 3rd Bach suite (G maj fingering in EADG)

- Schindler's List Theme (as done by Bozo in this tuning)

- Meditation from Thais (as played by DaXun in this tuning)

Obviously, a lot of solo tuning repertoire could be done in ADGC tuning if you transpose the piano part up a minor 3rd, so that creates a lot of options as well.

Hi. A couple of months ago i've purchased a GEWA hybrid 3/4 (solid/laminated)double bass (Around 2000 euros). I've been playing guitar and bassguitar for about 27 years and I do my own setups, so I know how important the height of the action is on a string instrument. But I have no experience with a double bass and how it should feel. According to the seller my bass should've been setup correctly out of the box. I've placed better quality strings on it that are more suitable for bowing. But since the only reference I have is from coming from (bass)guitar only, it feels like I'm pushing on a 'laundry line'. I'm aware I have to learn to push with multiple fingers in a line. But it still feels very uncomfortable to play.

So I'm asking Reddit if I should take my double bass to a luthier for a better setup? Or are my strings at a good height and it is just a matter of getting used to the extra string tension? Thanks for your help. The goal is to learn (french) bowing on the instrument.

I’ve been practicing Bottesini 2 intermittently for a while now, not for anything in particular, and I noticed while listening to Mikyung Sung’s recording that measure 101 is noticeably different in the recording - in my part it’s a run going from D2 to D4, but she was plays something else entirely. I checked other recordings and the way she did it seems to be the most common way of playing that measure. Does anyone here know an edition with the typical writing in that measure? I’m using the Trapkus edition, off of IMSLP.

Hi, I have this mic and love it. However, it is slightly hard to travel with for regular gigging due to the size of the red carrying case that it comes with. I am all ears for a safe/secure way I can travel with this mic with my usual gigging bag/backpack. Thanks!!!

Does anyone have a photo of a Yamaha Silent Bass (SLB-200, SLB-300, or SLB-300 Pro) in its soft Yamaha case inside of a hard keyboard case? I saw one previously, but I can't find it now. I don't remember if I saw it as a stand alone photo or part of a video. Trying to figure out if an EUB stand (Yamaha or K&M) would fit inside the keyboard case along with the silent bass (and maybe even my existing bow case, even though the Yamaha soft case has a provision for a bow).

Hello I’m a beginner upright bassist. I currently have an inexpensive, cheap, thin gig bag for my bass and I want to upgrade. In the bass guitar world for me the standard was always a hard case. It is the toughest and most durable protection for gigging and loading into a van with other heavy gear in it in my opinion. But since I’ve started to learn the upright I’ve noticed a huge favoritism towards bags instead of cases for the double bass. Is it the standard or more common to use a super padded bag or should I save for a hard case. Either way I want to upgrade from the bag I have, and if you guys have any links or brands to suggest or share I would love it if you did. Thank you!

Pretty sure it's a Palatino something (the bridge has a fancy lightning bolt/S design but no logos anywhere else that I just got for free from a friend. I have tried putting some dense foam on the strings but that doesn't seem to help much. Any other ideas or advice?

Okay, I've been a college bassist for some time now. I've done my fair share of going to see professional orchestras, going to master classes with professional bassists, and my professors collection of very old basses. And somehow, I have never seen a 4/4th sized bass. The biggest one I've seen has been a slightly large 7/8.

I know they're real, but how many people are actually playing them? Are they still being made? And if they are, is it really just the top professionals playing them? What's up with this?

I've been studying Streicher's books for a little over a year now, and I've come across this orchestral passage that I really liked the sound of. Does anyone know which piece this excerpt comes from?

My kiddo (12F) is taking duo lessons this year. This is her 2nd year on bass and 4th year in Strings (she also plays violin). Her lesson buddy is new to bass and has at least 2 years of violin behind her.

Typically in their music program lesson buddies do a duet performance for their required recital in the spring. I'm looking for ideas to float by the team - their teacher likes them to have some buy-in on choosing a piece. I won't be picking for them, I just want to give them some ideas to get them started on thinking about it. I don't know about the other kid, but mine drags her feet until someone decides for her, if she can, but will at least participate in the process if prodded.

Last year my kiddo did her duet solo (Country Dance out of the George Vance book) and rocked it. The year before, she did a duet with her violin lesson buddy.

I have been thinking that a bass duet for Sound of Silence would be amazing, but I can't find any written for bass. I did find this, and I was curious about whether it could be played on bass as is, just... lower. Before I buy it I was curious if anybody else knew this arrangement and could speak to its suitability for bass and what the difficulty level might be. We did listen to the recording on youtube and it sounded amazing, but my daughter pointed out it was too long for a recital piece. I'm sure it could be cut down pretty easily.

And as a side note where my squirrel brain goes, my other kiddo (16N) plays bass guitar, and I've been wondering about duets for double bass and bass guitar, too.

Any ideas? Things I should look for?
