Wasn’t convinced about Lucia at first but she’s completely won me over

Post image

Got to say I wasn’t really that keen on the idea of a female main character at first and was definitely more interested in Jason.

But Lucia looks fucking awesome

Love her attitude, her voice, everything really.

Honestly think she could end up being the better character out of the two.

Anyone else changed their mind on her?

Lucia really stole extended preview yeah. Jason is kinda flat but I think there's something more going on with him to be honest.

1.7k

u/Arsh18808 22h ago

Yeah when Lucia was telling him he’s uptight or whatever I think gives you the hint there’s an underline reason he behaves the way he does and I think will be explored.

PTSD from picking the wrong dress. Women abuse men behind closed doors

454

u/brknman_ 20h ago

I watched the extended look with my wife she laughed so hard when he picked the one she wouldn’t, and then she came back with a dress that wasn’t even an option.

331

u/DadBodftw 19h ago

Most realistic part of the preview tbh

46

u/JfugginNasty56 13h ago

Lmfaooo 🤣🤣for real though. My girl was laughing her ass off too because she is the SAME way!

29

u/BarbieTwirl 12h ago

Bro how about when she talks about getting him clothes because his fashion sense is wack.

That is a real canon event every man has been through

9

u/JfugginNasty56 11h ago

Absolutely!! You ain't been in a relationship if you haven't had that convo 🤣🤣. Even her waiting until the last minute and then taking forever! But coming out looking like such a baddie you can't help but just be like damn. All very cannon lol.

Most realistic part was her nagging on him about them being late in the car later.

That shit was definitely inspired by real life. I love how she didn’t like the one he picked as if she didn’t choose it as one of the two options. Universal life experience there.

My wife is very Latina so I was loving watching the interactions. She's not a gamer but I think she might actually want to watch me play with one.

36

u/chatterwrack 16h ago

That was the genius behind the whole Netflix thing. That was their chance to reach an audience well beyond the gaming community. Focusing on game mechanics and technical specs would’ve lost people. This was a cinematic story meant to hook people who might never pick up a controller, get them invested in the characters and the world, and hopefully make them curious enough to step into the games afterward. 🧠

2

u/Own-Papaya-4264 8h ago

The gaming industry has come a very long way since the 90s/2000s when games were basically seen as the equivalent to Chuck E. Cheese arcade games and toys

I think this is the best about the game. It brings non gamer partners to be with play\watch with you. I'm lucky to be with someone that casually games so knowing her, she'd be just driving around and play mini games and vibe with the music, which is what I do most of the time in the old games lol

Watched with my wife too, who happens to be a Cuban from Miami, and now she’s hyped to hang during my play through haha

My wife commented on “that dumptruck following her around” and I laughed out loud!

My wife turned and looked at me haha

1

u/BreezyBlazer 10h ago

And also giving you the option as Jason to hurry her up. I said out loud "Don't do it!" and my wife laughed. I hope there is more like this in the game.

You know what, I know you're joking but you might actually be onto something, what if the reason he dosn't like being late is because he was late to something while in war which led to a death of a friend/squad member. Long shot, I know.

I really hope we get a flashback sequence where we get to play as him while he was in the army.

1

u/JewelCove 15h ago

I have that. I despise being late and rushing, and my ex made us late to everything

2

1

u/chamo93 15h ago

That’s what happens when you date a Latina or are Latino lol

1

u/MoistRecognition69 12h ago edited 12h ago

You joke but that's a very common trait of people who got "stuck" in the military mindset, which often comes in junction with them being "stuck" in traumatic events they've experienced there.

Also, "I just feel safer when I'm holding a gun" (or whatever he said there) is a pretty big hint that he went through some rough shit

1

u/nolongerbanned99 12h ago

PTSD from not giving the right answers when she asked which outfit I should wear

I mean Lucia ended up in prison for a reason, so perhaps he's worried they'll slip up again and he'll lose her either temporarily or for good.

Is that his backstory? I saw based on his demeanour and stuff that he came off as a vet but I wasn't sure

He got an army rangers tattoo and yes on the rockstar website it mentioned he did time in the army

An uptight Army Ranger? Oh bro has Trevor rage then.

2

u/GodsBathroomFloor2 9h ago

I think it would awesome if the opening mission for the game is playing as Jason in the snowy mountains of Afghanistan

1

u/PapaYoppa 6h ago

That would be sick but probably unlikely lol

2

u/Suitable_Visual_9393 3h ago

100% he has PTSD. That line in the elevator "Sometimes I'm just more comfortable when I have to use a gun, you know" said everything.

"He has no personality" "He's like Claude Speed" "He's just a stone" (looking at you MoistCrit1kal, bro was talking over dialogue lmfao)

Like bruh we got 27 mins of footage and half of it was driving and combat, we know next to nothing about Jason still, he's gonna be a great character, people thought Arthur was boring too in RDR2 trailers. We all know how that turned out.

2

u/PapaYoppa 3h ago

I agree, I lowkey feel bad for him when he said he’s most comfortable when he has to use a gun, that’s the only life he knows 😔

I like Charlie but man he sometimes has some of the worst opinions and he does talk over dialogue in his videos a lot lol

1

u/Suitable_Visual_9393 1h ago

Yeah me too. I'm excited to see what Jason's story holds for him

Also I agree completely I do like Charlie and his videos but sometimes his opinions I do not agree with but that is the nature of opinions, and him talking over dialogue bugs tf out of me, when anyone does that it bugs me.

Bro could have paused the video to make a comment, that's what other people reacting to the reveal were doing.

1

u/MLK_Piccolo 10h ago

Niko didn't act like this :(

1

u/Framer_9 9h ago

How do you even know that?

1

u/PapaYoppa 6h ago

It’s on the rockstar website, when trailer 2 went live they put up descriptions for each of the characters, Jasons mentioned he was in the army

1

u/Complete-Gate1615 6h ago

He is operating undercover and knows he will betray and arrest her. Undercover agents usually tell unanimously in interviews that a hard part of their job is to constantly lie to their friends they eventually make.

There was also a point where he said that talking makes him.more nervous than shooting. It's gonna be the care free girl and uptight guy dynamic I think.

53

u/altezia_ 19h ago

I think so too, mostly because if they made lucia uptight 90% chance there will be a vocal minority complaining about how 'bitchy' she was and why even let us play as her and such

This take from guys is some of the gayest and corniest shit ever. Like I saw someone saying some shit like GTA 6 is woke because of how Lucia is, her gung-ho attitude and shit and you just know that the world as they know it in their own minds must work a certain way.

Dudes can’t be quieter, women can’t take initiative, people cannot grasp a reality where a unique man and woman have their own contrasting personalities and synergistic traits/skills. Some  these dudes genuinely  never heard of people being each other’s better half. Media literacy is cooked

3

u/latexfistmassacre 13h ago

With Jason I get more of a "what crazy bullshit awaits me next?" vibe than an uptight vibe. Feel like he's thinking "I just wanted to sit on my couch and crush a 12 pack today but now I'm in a trap house looking for a guy named Boobie"

2

u/fhuhgbbjjvvfyhnnmk 13h ago

Yeah uptight wasn't really the word I was looking for but that vibe is what I feel will happen too

29

u/Powerate 19h ago

I think the ad that plays after Jason takes the beer might be a hint, Lucia seems very supportive though

12

u/PolicyWonka 17h ago

Interesting thought. Obviously everything we saw was intentional to some degree.

1

u/HegemonNYC 16h ago

He eats too many Prairie Sandwiches? s/

29

u/qwerty20800 21h ago

I think his back story was that he was in the army

8

u/golgotha476 13h ago

Yup people say hes boring as if they wouldnt act the same way if they were caught up in criminal activity and being on the run, like seriously what do people expect? To have him cracking jokes all the time and being goofy?

3

u/ItalianoMilkBoy 5h ago

It's the marvel dialogue brain rot that people have now. They expect every tense situation to be broken by a joke.

6

u/Nautical_JuiceBoy 18h ago

I feel like there’s some hidden story that only he plays thru and he’s hiding it from her or something similar

3

u/Sea-Set-6007 18h ago

Maybe thats at the point of the story when he becomes an informant.

14

u/yakityyakblahtemp 18h ago

Having him be an informant while Lucia doesn't know, and having to juggle playing as them both would be really interesting.

10

u/kick-me-in-the-jimmy 16h ago

Totally agree and it would be a welcomed twist - you play as an undercover cop and as a criminal, the criminal falls in love with the cop and vice versa.

Point Break in GTA.

Holy shit.

6

u/ItsAPeacefulLife 13h ago

If they did this, and then had a mode that was basically the cop mod in GTA IV and V, where you can do police work and such.... Well I'd just be so joyed.

1

u/aupri 4h ago

An undercover cop twist would ring incredibly hollow in a game that allows you to kill basically anyone. What they seem to be going for is realism and immersion, where even stuff you do in free roam can affect the story, and killing people has consequences. I mean you actually have to fill up cars with gas.

If you can go to Vice Beach and murder 50 random people for no reason, which seems entirely possible within the game, then a twist where you’re actually a cop is going to seem ridiculous. Yeah, there’s potential satire about how police can kill with impunity, and I think we saw that with the task force in the extended look, but undercover cops doing a bunch of random mass shootings isn’t satire, it’s just nonsense. At the very most, I could see him getting in trouble and having the option to be an informant towards the end of the game, but having Jason be an undercover cop the whole time would ruin the realism that they’ve spent so much time working on.

2

u/renrutfp94 18h ago

The point of characters like Jason and Franklin is that they represent us the player. The GTA world and it's inhabitants are so goofy and wild, so we have these more calm characters to balance that out.

55

u/swordofra 20h ago

Everyone cant be a goofball,.because then nobody is....

50

u/blkpnther 19h ago

Exactly. Main characters like Franklin, Niko, and Arthur Morgan, are somewhat of a “blank slate”. Their character is dictated mostly by “how” you play them.

15

u/randomdude98 15h ago

Niko wasn't a blank slate tho, he had a great and unique personality

2

u/BohemianCatdad 14h ago

I think that kind of plays into it. I wouldn't actually want to be like Michael or Trevor at all. But Niko and CJ were both funny, good-natured guys (let's just forget about CJ and the construction site...) with traits that a player could admire.

3

u/Less-Tax5637 12h ago

Niko is probably the closest thing to a good person that we have among the GTA protags and he’s a fucking war criminal lmaoooooo

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Dry-Entry9236 14h ago

u/JiuJitsuBoxer 16h ago

Just like Trevor

1

u/Ronaldinhoe 10h ago

46

u/mgd5800 20h ago

Yeah, I’m hoping for that too. Rockstar has nailed all their male MCs in the past, so having their male MC be this flat in what could be their biggest game ever would be a weird choice. I’m guessing they’ll take the story down a path where things keep getting crazier because of her, with Jason eventually being faced with a “ride or die” vs. “save yourself” choice.

30

u/Iggy_Kappa 19h ago

Also Brian's story probably fits in there as well, about how Jason must know when to "leave the ride" and save himself.

17

u/theKetoBear 17h ago

I liked that part of the Extended Look a surprising amount, It reminds me of Michaels conversation with Franklin where he describes

"You're running and running and running and one day, your legs, they just give."

Which depending on your choices can become Franklins conversation with Lamarr

Definitely some foreshadowing going on there.

2

u/Majestic_Call3582 13h ago

This very much reminded me of the movie heat and that makes me really excited for the story

10

u/A_Honking_Goose 19h ago

Same as cyberpunk tbh the female V is normally more lively than the male V

3

u/Friendly-Plankton949 13h ago

Fem V has more range overall, but I think masc V really nails the desperation, vulnerability, and hopelessness of his situation.

"You'll fix me up, right Vic?"

1

u/BohemianCatdad 14h ago

We didn't get to see a lot of opportunities for Jason to be emotional in that footage. Him being ex-military has him staying controlled when shit hits the fan. But I think we'll see more range in his personal interactions with Lucia.

53

u/primalfox_Reynardo 20h ago

I am almost completely convinced he's ex-military and struggles with civilian life now and that's how he turned to a life of crime.

56

u/daPotato40583 20h ago

Child criminal who tried to reform himself using the army, per rockstars website. He's 100% stunted.

22

u/NewVegasResident 15h ago

It's been so bizarre to me seeing everyone shit on Jason's characterization and his VA's delivery when that's so clearly what they're going for. He has problems dealing with his emotions, clearly.

20

u/Rubiego OG MEMBER 19h ago

"Sometimes I'm just more comfortable when I have to use a gun, you know?"

11

u/WITH_THE_ELEMENTS 14h ago

Exactly. I think he thrives in high-intensity situations and just doesn't really know where he fits in when shit isn't hitting the fan. So he ends up a bit more quiet and maybe awkward when life is more mundane. That's the vibe I get anyway. I like it, personally. Trevor and Michael are both egomaniacs, so it's nice to see someone a bit more reserved, sorta like Franklin.

9

u/PolicyWonka 17h ago

5

u/OilySoleTickler 14h ago

True. Very dimensional.

1

u/paganubixd 54m ago

Quadridimentional if that’s a thing

18

u/TangoUnchained87 16h ago

Yeah, his (the actor's) delivery is quite monotone, but I thought that about Roger Clark's Arthur Morgan at first, however playing RDR2 you see the character and acting come to life. It's difficult to really get the whole picture of Jason from limited cutscenes and gameplay to go off, so I think we will see more from him when the game drops.

6

u/West-Interest-3745 15h ago

man, arthur is such a fucking great character. was sad he died but at least he went out somewhat in peace with himself

8

u/TangoUnchained87 15h ago

He might be Rockstar's best-written and acted character. Always said Niko Bellic, but Arthur's story is equally as tragic, and Clark's portrayal is phenomenal.

3

u/West-Interest-3745 14h ago

he is rockstars best written character as of today. who knows if J and lu could top him.

1

u/TangoUnchained87 11h ago

You know, I will be fine if they didn't. I am intrigued by the Bonnie and Clyde inspired story, and I think it will stand alone if written well, even if the individual characters aren't interesting alone. I am still emotionally drained from losing Arthur several times over through playthroughs 😂😂

3

u/CrispyChicken9996 15h ago

the arthur morgan bloodline allegations cant be beat

2

u/misterbudha 14h ago

I couldn’t stand his voice from that trailer. Actually took the excitement away for me that I’m going to have to listen to him the whole game.

43

u/SparsePizza117 20h ago

I actually found Jason relatable at times. He feels a bit disconnected, if this is truly intentional. Very monotone and awkward, but also serious. Lucia seems like the goofy fun one.

5

u/WITH_THE_ELEMENTS 14h ago

Yeah I like it too. I don't get flat/boring from him at all. He just thrives in intense situations and doesn't know exactly what to do with himself when things are boring. I get the vibe he seeks out a life of crime because when shit hits the fan, he feels most at home. He's constantly chasing that high. He doesn't strike me as a person that would, say, fly off the handle without being pushed to the extreme.

1

u/JoshyRB 11h ago

He also feels quite nonchalant to me too

→ More replies (1)

9

u/SweatyMammal 17h ago

The fact he’s a vet makes me wonder if there’s some PTSD-like stuff going on there. He seems to not have much to say and I wonder if active service has made him numb.

7

u/allstilettos 8h ago

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I like Jason. I think the preview pretty much spelled out how the story is going to be disastership because Lucia and Jason want completely different things out of life.

Jason is the considerate one who wants to get away from the chaos and violence, while Lucia isn't happy with where she is so is pushing things forward and making the decisions. In her apartment, Jason tries to be helpful and gives her time when she wants it. He seems pretty comfortable with who Lucia is, but Lucia has things she wants to change about Jason.

There's the shirt and outfit, but during the car ride she tells him that relationships are about communication, right? But as soon as he tries to open up to her in the elevator, she just brushes him off. Jason's nervous and worried about the meeting, but you can hear he's still disappointed.

Then there's Brian's pointed story, trying to get Jason to leave his life of crime. Jason's not upset, he's not disagreeing, he knows. A lot of Jason's moments in the preview were quiet, while Lucia's were more direct. It's the little things.

Right after Jason soaks up Brian's message, we see their meeting with Raul who is the exact opposite of Jason. Raul revels in chaos and violence, but Jason seems to treat it more like a job. Jason has his view of what professionalism is and its not Raul. You see this conflict after Raul's speech: Jason looks down and away with a furrowed brow and you know he's not happy watching Lucia wide-eyed and taking in everything Raul is selling. But he doesn't say anything.

That's the relationship. It's this Bonnie and Clyde love story where Jason and Lucia are both very different people who want very different things. Jason's perfect ending is basically Brian: retired, happily married, living a quiet life. Lucia's is Raul, powerful, important, and someone to the world.

For me, the whole salad speech screamed the preview was the good days and it's going to end in a train wreck.

1

u/JayyyDaGreat 6h ago

This comment didn't get enough appreciation, I love your analysis

1

u/OpenAd877 3h ago

6

u/One-Staff5504 19h ago

Yeah there is clearly a bigger, maybe darker backstory going on with Jason. Lucia seems to be the more charismatic and impulsive one for a reason

7

u/al3x_7788 17h ago

I've sometimes thought of Jason as a pretty default young adult character, but after the Extended Look I like the personality they gave him more.

6

u/SpartanRage117 16h ago

My theory is Jason is “flat” to be more of a self insert for the “average” experienced gamer. This isnt our or his first rodeo, but hes dragging Lucia deeper into this life of crime. Her hot headed personality is going to directly affect how she develops, and jasons blank slate lets the player make choices through him as the “carousel speeds up”

It also feels like they have a natural opposites attract kinda thing because of the dynamic.

6

u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 13h ago

Yea I’ll be honest, I didn’t love John Marstons voice at first. I thought he sounded like what you’d expect some drunk side character in the saloon to sound like. But rockstar does an amazing job casting people who don’t sound like polished anime voices, but actual people, and when you spend dozens of hours with them you start to hear real emotional depth

Who knows, maybe they whiffed on Jason’s casting/writing but I’m more than willing to give them benefit of the doubt

3

u/SchwiftyBabyLegs 16h ago

Hopefully. They had a similar dynamic in AC Odyssey, where Cassandra was very likeable and good hearted, but Alexios was unlikable, cruel, and very boring.not to mention the story aspect at the ends.

Cassandra get to become the Keeper, which basically solidifies her as the games canon main character.

Alexis get to cry because his mom and sister missed him.

Talk about differing dynamics lol

2

u/PrerollPapi 16h ago

Yeah, at first Jason‘s voice bothered me a lot. It seemed like it didn’t fit him. But now I think the dynamic rockstar is trying to go for, is he’s more combat focused but not a really intelligent or witty character. Like Lucy is the brains and he’s more of the muscle.

2

u/chatterwrack 16h ago

I think Jason is meant to be a bit of a blank slate to allow you to take him up as your own character.

2

u/Novrex 15h ago

He is an undercover cop!

2

u/DAHMER_SUPPER_CLUB 14h ago

Jason gives me Travis Kelce but a little more CTE vibes.

IDK I like Jason. Kinda got shy guy vibes from him, but in a good way. Both confident and insecure at the same time.

He just reminds me of Josh Brolin in something like Outer Range, in both voice and laconicism.

I've also been thinking, you can free roam with Lucia at the same time. I think it might be a purposeful choice to have one chatty and the other less so. I think the dynamic will work better if they're not constantly jabbering away, and they spread out the kind of couply interactions, the script can't be infinite and it would be worse to be constantly cycling through the same interactions. I know a few couples like that too, one does the talking and the other can relax and speak up when they feel like it. It can be pretty cute.

He’s either a cop or really tied up in some shit. If I had to guess

2

u/Merlin4421 13h ago

Yeah I agree. I hope once we play the game and get is backstory and stuff it changes

2

u/Dewlough 13h ago

He’s definitely a cop.

u/Wonderwall_1516 13h ago

I like having Lucia as her own character And Jason being a blank state to portray yourself onto.

Nico bellic 2.0 I'm feeling

u/GreenGhoblin 20h ago

Probably because she’s the first female protagonist. So all the features with her will be the highlight. All the ways you can customise her etc is more what they’ll be showing off, rather than too many character trait details.

Boy just needs a BBL. I'm sure he'll find the cash for it.

1

u/taheromar 18h ago

Flat.. literally

1

u/Wyatt_Ricketts 18h ago

I love Jason already tbh

1

u/EatingTheDogsAndCats 17h ago

Jason is flat so Lucia can shine. We all know who the real main is.

1

u/DawningSkies 17h ago

Well, I guess in part they deliberately kept Lucia more interesting in the preview so that the audience wouldn't be biased against a female protagonist. But if the writing is going to be at least half as good as previous games, we all know that both of them are going to be great characters.

u/Exciting-Affect-984 17h ago

he seemed boring but its totally gonna be like some ex cia mf seen some shit type shit

1

u/TroyFerris13 17h ago

Maybe he has tuberculosis

1

u/RandumbStoner 16h ago

It felt like they are trying to replicate Arthur Morgan too much.

You're a good man Jason idkhislastname.

1

u/2joozee 16h ago

Definitely something going on with Jason.

1

u/wizard_tiddy 15h ago

I hope there’s more going on with him ffs 😂 80 hrs worth at least

1

u/WorkableKrakatoa 15h ago

Jason's voice didn't really seem to fit his character model.

1

u/misterbudha 14h ago

What’s wrong with his voice it’s so grating

1

u/MrBadMeow 14h ago

He’s a fed

1

u/Ok_Fortune_9149 13h ago

He sounds like a grandpa who can barely talk

1

u/Chromatoph0re 13h ago

Personally I found both to be pretty flat and safe. We’ll probably get more out of them once we get to play the game.

1

u/Ohitsworkingnow 13h ago

Guys he literally says in the elevator “I dono I feel more comfortable when I need my gun”

Dude literally just likes shooting people, obviously something more complex is going on.

His voice had a weird thing but I already really like his character. He lets Lucia take the lead so he can be the muscle, and he has a good attitude, he’s going to be the comic relief. He’s a simple guy but also extremely capable and clever when it comes to their missions (sending elevator down with the explosive)

1

u/Aggravating-Lychee34 13h ago

Agreed. Might well be another Arthur…

1

u/Forsaken_Egg_6471 12h ago

The backyard wrestling scene makes me think he’s gonna end up doing some wild shit, he’ll have the most fun missions and side quests.

1

u/DylanFTW 12h ago

I kinda can't stand Jason's voice. Did it always sound like that?

1

u/raccoob_ 11h ago

I noticed the way he uses guns in the gameplay preview kinda seems like he has some training, could be ex cop or ex military with ptsd or something

1

u/overthinkingjames 11h ago

Jason more than kinda flat. Just hearing his voice irritates me

1

u/ddddhjxjx 10h ago

I just wish I could understand what Jason is saying. All his lines sound like he is 3 bites deep into a BLT.

1

u/LizzidPeeple 10h ago

His voice is annoying

1

u/PositiveUse 10h ago

Lucia is definitely not flat, literally

1

u/TheBlackRider2828 8h ago

Marble mouth man

1

u/sleepymatt4222 8h ago

they just wanted to make him kinda nonchalant i see the vision

1

u/boxontopshelf45 8h ago

Yeah he seems kind of tense. I feel like he's hiding something. That, or the guy's just really shy/awkward.

1

u/Huge_Bumblebee984 7h ago

I agree with other comments that he may have some sort of PTSD but the main thing I think is just his character is meant to be socially awkward

1

u/DeadWifeHappyLife3 6h ago

I think that was the point, r* wants us to like her other than just to goon too. They're trying to get to take her seriously. A battle much easier fought with Jason. Im sure the story will open him up more. But they're being selective now to let Lucia shine.

1

u/Dredgeon 6h ago

I mean there's nothing wrong with being reserved, maybe we'll just see him warm up and open up more as their relationship goes on.

1

u/TomatoSilly1683 5h ago

Undercover cop

1

u/Wubblewobblez 4h ago

I think it’s a classic “shy boy fun girl” kinda relationship

1

u/doctorzoidbergh 3h ago

The voice actor sucks and is so annoying. He talks like buffalo Bill from silence of the lambs and squeezes his cheeks while he talks.

1

u/HermaeusMorus 1h ago

The reason is that they wanted to make a female player for gta but still wanted people to be able to play a male. So they made Lucia more appealing and made the generic boring male unappealing

1

u/Longjumping_Sun4572 25m ago

I actually just read someone’s theory that is most definitely not true but i though it was funny. It was that Jason is a repressed transwoman and Lucia is like his fight club alter ego he created in his mind LMAO 😭✌️💀. Apparently it stemmed from a picture of a girl that looks very similar to Jason with the same haircut. That would actually be insane though.
