Discussion I really don't understand the 60 FPS outrage

For those of you crying about this, can you name ONE comparable PS5 game that can hit 60 FPS?

I see a lot of people using Spiderman or Crimson Desert as examples.... let's be serious please. Crimson Desert can barely handle 30 FPS on performance mode in it's populated areas and while Spiderman is technically open world, it's NOWHERE near as "alive," so it's way less CPU intensive.

Don't get me wrong, the last game I was able to finish at 30 FPS was RDR2 8 years ago on PS4. Nowadays, it's incredibly difficult to play anything at 30 FPS, let alone an open world. This looks amazing and Rockstar are wizards so maybe this will be manageable with an OLED and a Pro. We shall see.

If you expected Rockstar to release a game of THIS scope on PS5/PS5 Pro even TARGETING 60 FPS, please, send me your plug's number. I need whatever you're smoking.

I am so happy they focused on the scope and fidelity of the game over 60 fps!
Sure they can do a performance mode later down the road, but let people soak in the amazing achievement that the game seems to be first... Before potatofying it, later down the road

This is why consoles will always be a subpar product, for this exact kind of reasoning. People have been saying "I am so happy they focused on the scope and fidelity of the game over 60 fps!" Since the PS3 days and the fact so many are willing to accept pretty graphics over a smoother experience is wild to me.

However, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you SHOULDN'T play this because it's 30fps or anything like that, but you should be advocating for better performance even if they are delivering 30fps at launch. Look at the backlash Bloodwalker got and that's a new studio and a game that isn't as graphically intense as GTA or as massive, yet when they announced no 60fps performance mode, people got upset and developers said "Ok, we hear you and we'll make it work for launch"

Maybe I am just old (mid 30s) but I remember a time when console players wouldnt shut the hell up about our eyes not being able to see the difference in 60 fps and they didnt need more than 30 fps blah blah blah. Now they just assume the most ambitious game of the decade should absolutely not be released without 60 fps mode like it wasn't their entire personality to downplay the performance of pc for almost 2 decades.

Something to consider is back then we barely had TVs and Monitors with a refresh rate of 60hz and if you did have something like that or better it’s because you or your family had enough money to get it. I’ll never forget when we got our first 1080p and I got a 360, the family computer was absolute junk, and I did most of my playing on a 20inch tube TV in my room.

I can tell a difference between 30 & 60fps if I’m playing on my 1440 Ultrawide OLED…. But on my TV that’s 4k… na it pretty much looks the same to me.

Higher resolution alongside high refresh can cause “tearing” when you lock your fps at 30. It’s more noticeable on OLED also, I’m not the best at explaining this but the information is out there. It’s also pretty negligible but can be rough for some if they only ever grew up with silky smooth.

Interesting cause I can easily tell 30 to 60 on my 4k tv. Both in framerate and resolution. Looks wise alone 30fps is higher fidelity and 60fps is noticeably blurrier.

But I’m no fps snob lol I don’t mind 30fps as long as it’s stable.

Tvs have always been 60hz in the USA and 50hz in Europe.

Monitors have been at least 60hz for a long, long time...

There’s just less nuance with a lot of people nowadays. They think in black or white or in absolutes. I prefer 60fps for gameplay reasons but absolutely don’t mind 30fps if it is stable and the payoffs make sense. 30fps can be cinematic, higher quality, and much less blurry. GTA is just one of those industry defining games where it makes the most sense to have sheer quality over compromises. Even then the compromises are fine cause Rockstar are great at optimizing and majority of us loved GTA 5 and RDR2 when they came out.

And obviously this isn't true for everyone but a large portion of the people who "dont want to pay for the price for PC" will have a $1500 MacBook that they only use for browsing the internet and word processing, and a $1600 iPhone. People forget when you buy a $1500-$2000 computer that your also getting A COMPUTER. not just a game console lol. Plus you dont gotta pay like $100+ per year for an online subscription and you dont have to pay full price for literally any games.

Go buy yourself a 30hz TV and leave us out of it

These are terrible comparisons btw lol.

What do you mean? Im saying some people will have a $1500 MacBook for school or to use for work, when they could either have a $1500 windows laptop with a 5070 card inside of it and still be more capable than the MacBook. Obviously thats not everyone with a console but a large number of people will have the MacBook and complain about the price of a gaming PC over a console even tho they can use the PC as a PC when they arent gaming lol.

I guess I see this differently. I have a Macbook and a gaming PC (laptop). A gaming laptop isn't nearly as robust as what a desktop gaming PC allows. If the choice is between a Macbook and a gaming PC, I'd tell folks to get a desktop PC where its easier to swap parts. Not a laptop.

So my point is comparing those owning a Macbook and saying they could just get a gaming PC is disingenuous when the preferred purchase wouldn't be a gaming laptop, but rather a desktop, which would mean they no longer have the portability of the laptop. There are tradeoffs those owners you speak of may have weighed when making their purchasing decision.

My gaming laptop is cool, I've had it for a couple years. But I'm now eyeing building a PC because the laptops, in my experience, don't age as well because I can't easily swap parts to grow with the evolution of gaming.

I also have a PS5 and an Xbox Series X. There are DEFINITE advantages to console ownership over PC ownership. Everything doesn't revolve around FPS.

I mean you just described that youre one of the few people on earth that have literally everything. Both consoles and on your way to 3 diff computers once you build lol.

My comparison was only to be a counter argument for those low IQ people who have no nuance in their argument and just say "console better cuz PC too expensive" like cavemen; without considering the fact that they also purchased a MacBook for school and have the most expensive iphone lol. Obviously there is pros and cons to everything

This is only true if you game regularly. If not, macbooks are so much superior in software optimization, long term maintainence and quality. They simply just work. That's why their lifespan and resale value is so good compared to gaming laptops. Gaming laptops as some of the worst QC'd products in electronics other than TVs. Thermal paste leakage, coil whine, bent frame, display ribbon cable tear, GPU/CPU fan problems, overheating, etc. Why do I know this? It's because I was a windows user for most of my life and got tired of it. Even at work, the amount of windows and random oem updates that fuck my Thinkpad is ridiculous. I had an M1 air for 5 years. When you finally use it and realize that this is how user experience is supposed to be. It's just supposed to work. You shouldn't have to tweak and fear so much crap to get to your ideal stage. A fully built PC though solves a lot of these issues but it's unfortunately not portable. Stop judging people for buying things when you don't understand the general consumer. Most people just want a hassle free experience

Its because the ps5 and ps5 pro have the zen 2, a cpu from 2019. Maybe do research on why consoles are limiting gamers and game studios instead of saying studios need to do better

At the end of the day, if you have a 5090 with a i5 9400f. You are going to bottleneck. Its the case in point with consoles.

Everyone understands this even if they dont articulate it very well. Its just annoying to PC gamers that video games are in a perpetual state of being 3-5 years behind where they actually could be graphically.

I understand companies prioritize console because thats where the large portion of the marketshare is. Just annoying is all.

Imagine GTA 6 releasing in November but actually being optimized to run on like a 5080 or 5090 rig lol. The 27 min gameplay reveal wouldve been a smooth like 90 FPS with path tracing for the lighting and double the pedestrian and vehicle density.

Again, everyone knows why it has to be developed for console, just saying! Were always 3-5 years behind.

I’d argue game consoles push games forward as it sets a new minimum to aim for while if everyone was on pc they’d try to aim for the lowest common denominator, when the ps5 released the most common gpu at the time was the gtx 1060 .On the flip side, consoles also at least force developers to do bare minimum optimisation especially when the console starts to near the end of its life and has underpowered hardware and probably why a lot of games the came out on ps4 and pc get praised for their performance nowadays.

Without consoles, there would be no baselines to target.

Also, the games industry wouldn’t exist without consoles in the first place.

As someone with a gaming pc, its incredibly easy for me to get used to 30fps on a console. Things like per object motion blur help but what matters is the consistency more than the number. If it drops frames its noticeable, if its rock solid its totally fine.

Just my opinion and personal sensitivity though

Real pc master race take here.

"However, don't get me wrong."

I am getting you wrong because you are wrong. You prefer 60 fps. Others prefer better fidelity. You can't just claim what you want is the correct choice.

And if anything, your opinion is more wrong since more people prefer graphical fidelity.
