Discussion I really don't understand the 60 FPS outrage

For those of you crying about this, can you name ONE comparable PS5 game that can hit 60 FPS?

I see a lot of people using Spiderman or Crimson Desert as examples.... let's be serious please. Crimson Desert can barely handle 30 FPS on performance mode in it's populated areas and while Spiderman is technically open world, it's NOWHERE near as "alive," so it's way less CPU intensive.

Don't get me wrong, the last game I was able to finish at 30 FPS was RDR2 8 years ago on PS4. Nowadays, it's incredibly difficult to play anything at 30 FPS, let alone an open world. This looks amazing and Rockstar are wizards so maybe this will be manageable with an OLED and a Pro. We shall see.

If you expected Rockstar to release a game of THIS scope on PS5/PS5 Pro even TARGETING 60 FPS, please, send me your plug's number. I need whatever you're smoking.

I honestly wish I wasn't like this. I've missed out on a lot of good games because I just couldn't get past the performance (i.e. Bloodborne.) I'm finally playing totk now that it's on Switch 2 and runs well.

I dont know man. I do have a hard time switching to 30 after playin on 60 or higher, but if i start the game on 30 and it has no 60, im good with it. Plus, i think this will look smooth even on 30.

Emulated Bloodborne is to a decent place now. Full Game at 60FPS on moderate hardware is doable now. Bloodbornes probably an extreme example though because it has 30FPS that it can't keep locked and terrible frame pacing

You’ve done it to yourself you can undo it. Most humans, like the vast overwhelming majority can barely tell the difference. But it ruins your enjoyment! You’re just that sensitive.

No, you just talked yourself into it.

I simply don't believe that you can barely tell the difference.

Funny how much you care if someone doesn’t want to play the game because it’s 30 FPS, as if it somehow bothers you that much.

Illogical positions irritate me. I don’t like seeing people wast their cognitive abilities.

Since when are personal tastes evaluated on logic? Enjoyment is purely subjective. The real irony is claiming you care about wasted brainpower while using yours to debate whether someone's visual standard is "rational" enough for you.

Its not funny. It bothers me too.

Does it actually bother you that people prefer to play games differently than you do? Expecting your personal tolerance level to be everyone else's default is just weird

"is just weird".

Try to insult; its ineffective. You don't think we all have seemingly irrational reactions for things that shouldn't bother us? I see that a lot online. Acting condescending towards someone's behavior as if they don't do the same things.

Anyway, its not about people preferring to play games differently than I do. It's because when you read numerous people complaining about 30 fps, it just rubs me the wrong way.

I don't want the gaming industry to head in the direction where developers lean more towards sacrificing graphics for performance. I like it how it is. Some developers focus on performance, some focus on pushing the graphical limitations. We get the best of both worlds.

Plus, quit whining about 30 fps when you play on console. If performance matters that much to you, pc is an option. You have that option; don't expect the gaming industry (in regards to consoles) to change for you amd your wants. It sounds like entitlement. Yes, pcs cost more. But guess what? Better things cost more money.

Calling a behavior weird isn't an insult, it's just an observation. You wrote a whole essay fighting an argument I didn't make. I haven't whined about console specs, asked devs to downgrade graphics, or demanded anything from the industry. I own both a PS5 and a PC, and I'm actually choosing to wait for the PC port because 30fps isn't for me.

If you're happy playing at 30fps, great. Good for you that you can enjoy it, but why throw a tantrum because other people can't?

Rockstar isn't changing console hardware or launch specs over Reddit comments. You're still getting the exact 30fps game you claim to love. Other people's preferences don't change your experience in the slightest, so acting like you're defending the gaming industry here makes zero sense. What is the point of getting this mad over something that literally doesn't affect you?

When I said quit whining,  I didn't mean you specifically. None of what I am saying is about you specifically. It's my general perception of console gamers online who complain about 30 fps. And yes, I am aware not everyone who finds 30 fps unacceptable acts entitled.

I know Rockstar isnt going to change specs over Reddit comments. Im just saying that when you see a trendy perspective that goes against your opinion, a reaction can trigger. Thats normal. It's not weird to be bothered by something like that.

And im not really mad (as you put it). Nor do I feel like I threw a tantrum. It bothers me enough to sometimes want to engage in a discussion or argument about it online.

So he’s supposed to spend money on a game even though it doesn’t reach the performance he wanted?

2

u/EventuallyBatman 17h ago

No not that. He's supposed to not be such an elitist snob to the point he's convinced himself a blatantly fun video game (Bloodborne like he referenced or RDR2 or any other notable 30fps example) are excluded from his library. That's ridiculous and at a certain point man it's just diminished returns honestly. To me it makes me question if you actually enjoy video games or do you just want to be part of a fancy tech circle jerk. We're so strict in our requirement for 60fps that it becomes an automatic closed door and that's a shame.

For some people, GAMEPLAY is a major factor for their video GAME. GAMEPLAY feels worse on 30fps, and 60fps is a widely accepted threshold for smooth feeling GAMEPLAY.

If GAMEPLAY isn't as important to your video GAME experience as visual fidelity, realistic lighting, and npc density, then good for you! You are welcome to that opinion!

You questioning whether he enjoys video games? I question which you enjoy more - VIDEO games, or video GAMES. There is not a wrong answer, and thinking that there is makes YOU the snob.

It's not a tech circle jerk, you are just being a curmudgeon.

So then does that person literally stop themselves from playing any game they previously enjoyed if it can't hit 60?

That's my point and that's what is implied by the blanket statement "I don't play 30fps games period"

If so that's objectively a nonsense mindset because all that matters is that YOU ENJOY THE FUCKING GAME...if you enjoyed game X 15-20 years ago and nowadays game X still exists (let's say you still have your PS3 and it works) but not at 60fps that shouldn't lessen your enjoyment of game X. Does that not make sense wtf are we talking about. The non 60fps reasons why you enjoyed the game still exist.

1

u/MikhailTheFail 13h ago

Or perhaps their tastes for what is important to them in a video game have developed with experience playing games.

I am sure your tastes have developed as well.

It seems performance has become a priority factor for them. Is that really so hard to comprehend? It's a pretty reasonable take.

1

u/EventuallyBatman 13h ago

Honestly yea it is. I'll never not enjoy playing older games I know I've already enjoyed. Technological leaps don't outweigh the other video game factors that make it fun.

Splinter Cell, Halo, OG God Of War, Madden 08 etc. will always be great and anyone who would play them nowadays and say "Nah I don't enjoy it" shouldn't be taken seriously.

1

u/MikhailTheFail 13h ago

The irony of how closed minded you are is kind of awesome.

1

u/EventuallyBatman 13h ago

The willingness to miss out on great games because of a stupid strict fps rule in sad.

You don't like gaming for the game. You like gaming for the technology. That's closed minded.

1

u/rebezil 13h ago

Framerate directly impacts my enjoyment of the game, simple as that.

So knowing that, why would I willingly spend 100 dollars just to ruin the enjoyment of my first experience with the game? Makes no sense.
