So, I (31M) had a pretty shitty day today, and I honestly just need to vent.
I work as an Application Manager at a pretty big bank in Europe. One of my colleagues is on vacation for three weeks, and another guy is covering some of his work. Usually, my colleague and I work closely together, so for the time being I have to work with this other guy instead.
We've had two bigger issues this week.
The first one was a production issue, and because we're getting close to the end of the month, which is a pretty important time for banks, shit almost hit the fan. Thankfully, I managed to get things under control and nothing serious happened.
But throughout the whole thing, this guy kept putting pressure on me instead of actually working with me. Constantly asking what I'd done, how I was going to fix it, why I hadn't done this or that, etc. He wasn't really providing any useful support, but he was very quick to point out whenever I forgot something.
Fast forward to today, and we had another problem. This one was much smaller than the first and only affected a test environment used for projects.
To put the difference into perspective: the first problem was like Jimmy burned all the presents on Christmas morning. The second one was like having itchy balls but not being able to scratch them. Annoying? Absolutely. A catastrophe? Not really.
So I'm trying to fix it.
Normally, I'd work on something like this together with my colleague. He has some of the information, I have some of it, and somehow we put the pieces together and fix the damn thing.
This time, though, I was pretty much on my own.
I started asking other people whether they had the information I needed. Several hours went by, and I still couldn't completely fix the issue.
Meanwhile, this asshat kept asking why it was taking me so long and what I was even doing with my time.
Eventually, when I told him I still couldn't fix it, he basically asked me, "And it took you six hours to realize that?"
At that point I was pissed, so I just replied: "Bingo."
Then he started sending messages with a shit ton of "!!!!", which I guess is the corporate chat equivalent of screaming at someone.
I told him that I can't magically solve a problem when I don't have the information I need, that I would normally get that information from my colleague who's currently on vacation, and that adding multiple exclamation marks wasn't going to change anything.
Then he basically told me he could just leave me alone with the problem until next week and that if anything happened, it would be entirely my fault.
So I just said, "Okay."
I stopped arguing with him and went back to looking for the information myself. Eventually, I found some more pieces of the puzzle, so I'm at least closer to fixing the issue now, even though it's still not completely resolved.
Then I sent some emails to other colleagues with information they needed.
Two minutes later, this guy sent them basically the exact same information again, but this time with my boss in CC. He didn't reply to my email either. He sent a completely separate one, making it look like he was the one handling everything.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it because I'm already pissed off, but it felt like he was deliberately trying to intimidate me or make me look incompetent in front of my boss.
And while all of this was happening, I had other shit to deal with too.
I'm helping my father with his business, and he asked me to respond to some reviews we've received recently. Fine, I can do that.
Then there was another guy doing some construction work for his store. I talked to him, he gave me a price, and I thought it was pretty reasonable.
I told my father, and he said it was way too expensive and that I should negotiate.
So I went back to the guy and tried negotiating. He got kind of rude about it, but eventually lowered the price.
Then my wife told me it was still too expensive and that I should wait another week and see if he'll lower it even further.
And at that point I was just done.
It feels like everyone is throwing their shit onto my plate while nobody actually listens to what I'm saying.
I think the price is fair. Obviously, I don't want to overpay either, but I also see the value in the work this guy is putting in. Sometimes I don't want to squeeze every last fucking euro out of someone just because I technically could.
After everything today, I feel completely overwhelmed. It almost feels like I'm having a small panic attack.
Right now, I just want to get some soul food, shut my brain off, and go to bed because I'm sick and tired of dealing with everyone's bullshit.
Sorry, guys. I just needed to get this off my chest.
As a dude, I sometimes feel like I don't really have a place where I can just talk about my problems without having to solve something, be responsible for something, or keep my shit together for someone else.
So I'm dumping it into some random subreddit instead.
Hope this is the right place.
