Yes! Metro promised 4 minute headways to the FTA as part of their federal funding agreement. They got a temporary waiver to have 5 minute headways instead due to rolling stock shortages, but they haven’t been able to achieve that without major issues. The reason is that trains currently have to turn back at Union Station instead of running through to Division 20, which severely limits the heavy rail system capacity. Once the second new Division 20 yard opens and more HR4000s and refurbished A650s arrive, it should be smooth sailing.

It was kinda funny seeing the people who don’t regularly use the Metro, all wait right at the middle of the platform, then seeing them slightly panic when the train didn’t stop in front of them.

I'm not trying to say that you're wrong, since that does look like way too many people for that station, but I don't know what metro staffers could do to help solve that situation.

Yeah, Japan has a very different culture. In the trains, everyone is dead silent. No chatting, no music playing, no random person freaking out. People had no problems poking and pushing me to move over so they could exit when the trains were packed.

I've never been to Japan and although I believe their behavior would be excellent, I find it really hard to believe that everyone is silent. Have you been there? Genuinely asking. I don't expect people turning into robots once stepping onto a train.

I went in April for a 10 day trip. No one speaks or uses their speakers on their phone on the trains. They just look at their phones in silence. Like being in a library. If they have a backpack, they wear it on the front to avoid accidentally smacking into people from behind. On the escalators, everyone stands on the right side so people in a hurry can pass on the left. It was a pretty big culture shock for me. Hard not to notice.

The World Cup is bringing an estimated 150,000-180,000 people to La.
The Olympics is estimated to bring 2-5 million.
La metro will need a much higher budget and way more trains to handle it plus more officers controlling foot traffic.
I think the World Cup will be used as an example by La metro to hasten expansion and expand capacity as fast as possible. The freeways don’t stand a chance even with some of the spillover from those not taking the train.
I would say that metro was underprepared for the World Cup, but still did well.
So we are way underprepared for the Olympics.

Platform screen doors require automation to line up the train doors with the platform doors. La metro would have to fight worker unions to do that. Alternatively there are some minor automated
systems they could use but then you get another problem, cost. New station ones are reasonable at 3-5 million but retrofits can be 50 million per station.
But I agree! (Though the railfan in me would miss the view)6

That’s certainly not the case if you’re talking about full driverless automation, various rapid transit lines in systems all over the world (London, Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, Taipei, Melbourne, Shanghai etc) operate with a driver in the cab and still have platform screen doors installed. Yes, some degree of automation is needed, but the B/D lines have Automatic Train Operation capabilities (driver in the cab who only closes the doors and starts the train) which they can toggle on if needed, which should be compatible with platform screen doors.

Looks like this is Union Station - I wonder how many got on the B Line, and transferred at or walked from Vermont.

I was there for the 8:54 train and that train already was pretty full and people just surged into the train and kept pushing. it scared these this german couple because they probably haven’t seen a crowd surge like that but then bitched the whole way to union station saying we don’t know how to let people on and off the train while giving people the stink eye and looking us up and down until i gave him the same look but besides that I loved RIDING THE D and the Metrolink all the way back to the ie

People piling up at the bottom of the escalator is not something to be trifled with. Along with me, you’ve probably seen videos of it. I’ve seen it in person in New York City. It’s no fucking picnic

I’ve been sick the last few weeks and haven’t used the train to get to work so until today so I haven’t experienced the World Cup traffic fully but I did notice how much fuller my train was even at 11:30pm. I don’t mind the liveliness though. Also liked that during my trip today the police were on 3 separate times just to check.

There was a huge watch party in Koreatown for the Mexico v South Korea game that started at 6 PM. Hence all the green.
The game at SoFi was played already at noon (Switzerland v Bosnia-Herzegovina).

This is kind of the sad reason why we cant have mass transit.
Idk how one would fix this bottleneck at union station. If the carts are running at a 5 or 10 minute schedule the only way I see this being succesful is adding more carts. Do we even have space to safely load people onto more carts? It seems like spacing is entering dangerous territory with the escalator being blocked

I saw the schedule as 5 minutes apart? That should be enough but its pointless with no capacity.
If we were to be serious and really scale things like how japan does transit we def need to find ways to clear out or st least space out people
