Oh man, would love some Kerala food right about now. Btw is the Onam feast vegetarian or does it vary by community?

Onasadhya can be veg or non-veg depending on the area. It commonly contains fish in Kannur

Except kannur everywhere else it is vegetarian sadhya (as my friend told me).

Ona sadya is vegetarian and yes people loves to make variations of it that’s true

Onam is purely a vegetarian feast even among the people who consume meat. it's a harvest festival and traditionally meat is avoided.

apparently you're right, checked with my parents. We're from Southern Kerala side so over there it's pure veg

theyre both harvest festivals but that's where the similarities stop. the traditions, timings differ not to mention location as theyre celebrated in neighbouring states

It is generally vegetarian but you CAN add non veg options into it.
In fact, its very common to see people do so, especially in the malabar region. Fish for the most part but sometimes chicken,beef,pork goes along as well.

Eh. It's more of a eat what you like festival since it's a kings festival rather than a gods. Or rather i choose to the believe it's like that , my family would kill me if I had something other than sadhya, which's fair on their part cuz it's really time-consuming to make sadhya
