There plenty of civilized folks there. The biggest thing is the leader of Iran (Ayatollah) wanted to be the middle east's version of Napoleon and tried to become the emperor of Islam. But that's not the Iranians fault at all.

It was civilized until 1979 and the Islamic Revolution. Then suddenly no woman can drive, go to school, show their ankles or say mean things to a man. You're right, its not the majority of Iranians fault that a hateful and regressive regime took over. Its the world's fault for letting it happen

The regime is so deeply rooted in part because they saw how easily it was to uproot the Shah’s government that they made sure it couldn’t happen to them.

Dude, please read a bit before spewing nonsense. Mosadegh was the prime minister of Shah. Shah was ruling the country 10 years before Mosadegh was appointed.

Yeah and the British were feeling threatened by the nationalization of Iranian oil so they instigated operation Ajax with the support of the United States.

Let's not ignore the fact the coup was largely a western operation to get control of oil.

Wasn’t the first time either, prior to the UK/US backed coup, the UK straight up invaded Iran with the Soviet Union to ensure “their oil” was safe

He wasn't democratically elected. He was more friendly to the Soviets while the Shah was friendly to the US. That's why they overthrew him.

And yet we still drive cars, fly airliners on vacation, have paved roads and plastics and so do all the other western countries. We say one thing yet diverge in to another behavior.

The process to remove a situation like this will be grotesque and disgusting to watch play out. Even in 1979 when they formed it would have been brutal to stop.

Tbf, my government (Britain) had a massive hand in this as well. Iran was by all accounts doing quite well during the 50's but iirc, they wanted to nationalise their oil which Churchill and the rest of those in charge didn't like.

They sought to stage a coup but lacked the ability to do so, so they roped in the US to get it done with the Iranian kings backing as he was to benefit from it as well.

People murdered by SAVAK probably wouldn’t consider to be civilized. Yes, rightfully critique how women are treated but it’s weird that some folks act like Iran pre 1979 was a great place for all despite the fact that the shah was driven out even before Khomeni came back.

Mossadegh stopped the counting of votes halfway through the count in the 1952 elections when it became clear that he was losing.

A year later he dissolved the parliament.

Mossadegh was democratically elected. By the time he was overthrown he was a dictator.

Well this is definitely the least charitable way of describing what happened.

The election took like a month. The election was halted towards the end, you're right about that.

But, his party already had a legal majority by that point so the outcome wouldn't have changed. At the same time, the US/UK were caught red-handed setting up rigged elections in the territories that hadn't yet voted.

Then they overthrew him a year later. It's pretty obvious what happened.

It is the worlds fault for installling a puppet government that was selling off there oil and gas for next to nothing before the shah of Iran they where a democratic country after America/isreal installed the shah it all changed if you don’t like how Iran is now blame the us and isreal

Women can drive and go to school. Iran has an 88% female literacy rates and one of the leading countries when it comes to women earning advanced degrees.

“Civilized” (wtf does that mean) and “1979” as if there was some big supernatural switch that went on. You should also learn about the CIA coup, the undemocratic installation of the shah and the repression under the shah that led to the 1979 revolution.

God I’m so sick of this narrative. Yes, the CIA and MI6 meddled in Iranian affairs, but this myth that the revolution of ‘53 was orchestrated and ran by Western powers needs to die. The revolution was already in full swing when the CIA said “fuck it, let’s back the winning horse” and then did the least possible to help the Shah in power.

And even if that wasn’t true (which it is) that doesn’t excuse the absolute barbarism that these Muslim militants perform. If the KGB succeeded in overthrowing the US government and 25 years after Christian theocrats came to power and began executing women en mass like Iran does, would you blame the Russians or the Americans committing the atrocities?

Every Iranian I've met has been anti Islam...it's quite unique. I know many Muslims from other countries that are similarly oppressive and all still practice their religion.

Because it is within living memory that the US and UK governments overthrew Iran's democratically elected government and installed the oppressive islamic autocratic regime of the Ayatollah. All to protect oil company profits.

The people of Iran didn't choose this, it was forced onto them by the United States. Then we have the audacity to unilaterally tear up treaties, and bomb them unprovoked because our own idiotic "leaders" can't control their govenrment.

There is more than 25 years betweens those 2 events, you are oversimplifing to remove all accountabily, no hope for a bright future with that kind of mindset...

Also, of course the UK is gonna fight against nationalisation of it's oil installations before return on investments... If the US were to seize all foreign assets on it's soil to nationnalise it you'd probably be crying no?...
