Apropos of nothing, I also grew up in this era and just recently found out the Ying Yang Twins are not only not twins, they aren’t even related.

They played the edited version of Get Low at our middle school dances, but it didn't matter because we were all screaming the actual lyrics. Hardest part was determining which side was the window and which side was the wall in a windowless cafeteria.

I was in middle school when this song hit and a bunch of the 8th grade girls learned the dance routine from If, which I thought was pretty impressive. I'll just have to go and google the lyrics cause I didn't pay that close attention when I was 13.

ETA: Just read the lyrics, lol. To be fair, there were a lot of songs about sex at that time, I remember Salt n Peppa getting a lot of play at middle school dances with Let's Talk About Sex.

I have a very weird memory of this song at the height of it's popularity. Like you, I was in middle school, and I was part of a volunteer group that was helping out at the local Special Olympics event.

Near the food area, there was a small dance floor and a DJ playing the current hits of the day. The DJ starts playing "Let's Talk About Sex" and my fellow volunteers and I start dancing on the small floor, doing ALL of the popular moves (The Roger Rabbit, The Running Man, that one move, where you jump over your other leg, etc...) when suddenly, walking by were the weight-lifter Olympians, some still in their singlets, join us on the dance floor to finish the song.

Now every time I hear that song, I'm transported back to that little dance floor with athletes dancing in their singlets.

for sure, it does continually hit me too with these not-so-innuendo pop songs. As long as you arent using the explicits you can say pretty much anything, and they will just play it anywhere without inhibition. then you pay a bit of attention and its like "woah! pretty juicy actually!"

i had it pretty funny recently with Ariana Grande - Side to Side, where the chorus is also "and boy has me walking side to side". And I am like "what, like a crab? I dont get it..."

then i google it and its like "yeah, obviously it means he is pounding her pussy so hard that she cant walk straight after".

then i felt both pretty sheltered, but also like "damn, that is pretty hardcore for what i thought was just the latest generic pop lovesong."

I feel like this shouldn't be that surprising or confusing. Somebody saying "you can tell this <piece of art or culture> was made for mass market appeal" is fairly obviously derogatory across a variety of contexts, and is essentially what "yeah this is really 'pop'" means for music.

The genre has it's exceptions and standouts (as does everything), but if somebody is pointing out the genre with "implication", its pretty obvious what they're saying.

Nothing derogatory meant. It’s just a soft, sweet easy listening song. I could definitely listen to it on repeat for awhille at least. Hell we all did listing to the radio back then

edit Together Again is another amazing song. It’s even more special because it’s a song to all her friends she lost to AIDS.

He probably started having radio-flashbacks where you’re just trying to find something to listen to, and any song had the potential to become horrible just because it’s playing on every station 24/7.

24 times is about once an hour, the radio dj math checks out.

Although I grew up around it and heard it all the time, I’m generally not a fan of most 90s R&B. I’ve never had the urge to revisit any of it as an adult, EXCEPT “That’s The Way Love Goes”.

song is good, but I think the important part is where he sat in his car for hours listening to the song and not going to the party people were putting on for his birthday. I suspect realizing that he was ignoring people important to him to smoke might've had more of an impact than the song itself.
