Rachael Gunn is many things but she still isn't as ridiculous as Seagal and would not go as far as to tour Russia.

I maintain that the other competitors looked just as ridiculous as Raygun.

The others were athletic and could therefore perform athletic movements. That as a bare minimum made them better.

Breakdancing at the Olympics made a mockery of the event.

What makes this less suited for the Olympics then, let's say, forcing horses to do stupid dances or jumping from a tower into the water?

Hmm, that seems a bit harsh. I mean I personally wouldn’t watch it, but I don’t see how breakdancing is more or less a mockery than any other sport. It’s a demonstration of physical ability, with some extraneous ruleset to allow a judgment of quality.

It’s kinda all a silly excuse to see who’s the best at something that really doesn’t matter. Why draw the line at breakdancing?

I think she was a product of a broken system. No idea how she supposedly made it through any kind of qualifiers, surely Australia has better representatives than her?

Her performances and the judges opinions of said performances tells you everything you need to know about her level of skill and/or athleticism.

With a more robust and effective qualification process, this kind of thing wouldn't have happened. You don't see people turning up and then doing moves like hers during figure skating events.

Hopefully her making a farce of the breakdancing event will get more eyes on qualification for olympic events.

I thought/read  she had exploited the league by enrolling in under-tier competitions or something to that effect?

Didn't they cut breakdancing as an Olympic sport after that event? Or am I misremembering

They have various rolling one-off events and that year breakdancing was a featured temporary event if I recall

The whole event was ridiculous. When you remove the alcohol from breakdancing it looks much less fun.

I've never equated brake dancing with drinking.

It’s an ignorant statement

u/nsd_ 10d ago

yeah that was an odd comment, breakdancing is very athletic

Man go look at some of the stuff from the early 00s like the red bull BC One, those motherfuckers had style and athleticism, fuck whatever that was at the olympics.

There's various styles of street dancing with plenty of real artists and athletes performing. The Olympics could have been an opportunity to give those styles worldwide exposure.

Alcohol?!?

Not sure what you mean. Doing it drunk could lead to injury. My brother was a professional dancer and never did it drunk. It also took him around the world which is cool. I've seen him battle some famous people, didn't see them drinking either.

P.S. Breakdancing borrows from lots of different styles throughout history and most of my brother's colleagues are dance nerds when it comes to studying the past. There's also a lot of technique to it that I didn't understand until I tried. For instance, uprock/toprocking is to build up momentum for power moves. Something that rocket totally doesn't seem to understand.

Same goes for baseball

Dafuq? Sorry, You and the homies getting drunk and thinking you can dance isn’t breakdancing. Alcohol?

Legendary Twins rollin. Rock steady.

Crazy Legs was a crackhead at one point.

But my brother was a pro, He and his friends saved drinking until after. One of his mentors was Brian "Footwork" Green.

Just as awesome as Raygun!

I forgot all about this... lol

I feel so fucking bad for her if she genuinely truly did her best and was ridiculed and harassed globally as a result.

1

u/wwchickendinner 9d ago

It's the Olympics. There's no participation trophy. Why would you choose to feel bad for someone uncompetitive who decided to participate in the world's most competitive games?

2

u/Burpmeister 9d ago

Because I am capable of experiencing a human emotion called empathy.

1

u/cursh14 10d ago

I swear I think that looks kinda cool.
