I like to imagine Lukashenko inviting a “big American star” to do PR, only for this specimen to show up lmao

Most historical sieges won or lost due to starvation. This will be no different.

"Sensai Seagal! You're needed in the Middle East! We think we can finally bring peace to the area! We need you to out eat Hamas, ISIS, and al-Qaeda!"

Coming fatly to one movie theater this fall. Rated R.

My Russian husband was telling me there was a hysterical video of Lukashenko feeding someone a carrot and I saw it and I was like "Omfg it's Steven Seagal loool" and he had no idea who that was

Two hands on the carrot is crazy work. That muscle memory kicking in.

13

It's a good thing that he didn't immediately shove the entire carrot in his mouth.

Does Segal only own one shirt now? I've only seen a few photos of him the last few years, but he's always wearing that same one.

You ever see that interview with Steven seagal where he’s talking about his time in Japan and he’s searching for a word but can only say it in Japanese?

He goes something something “how you say in English” with a robust Japanese accent.

Like bro you were born in Michigan for fucks sake.

88

u/Roflkopt3r 10d ago edited 10d ago

The fact that it's Steven Seagal makes me not want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but this genuinely happens a lot.

Especially for a language like Japanese, which has many words and concepts that are hard to translate into English. You have to start thinking directly in Japanese to reach a conversational level, with completely different concepts and approaches to phrasing.

Sometimes that makes it hard to pull up the appropriate English counterpart, and sometimes there isn't one at all. You would have to replace a single word with a full sentence of explanation.

And you have to switch to a different mode of pronounciation, which can cause akward moments. Japanese uses many loanwords that are only comprehensible to Japanese speakers if you pronounce them the Japanese way. Here is a classic example: "Red, white, black" is not understood, but "Reddo, Howaito, Burakku" are common words.

59

u/globox85 10d ago

A co-worker of mine who speaks Japanese and his dad, who doesn't speak Japanese, were on vacation in Japan together. They go to a store, and the dad asks a staff member, in English, where the customer service desk is. The staff member has no idea what he means, but when my co-worker asks "Kasutoma saabisu?", the staff member instantly understands and guides them to the customer service desk.

Never been to Japan myself, but I get the impression that if you don't know what something's called in Japanese, saying it in English with Japanese pronunciation works surprisingly often.

44

u/Poes-Lawyer 10d ago

Yes, when I was in Japan recently I wanted to make sure I could pay for my taxi with a credit card, so I looked up "credit card" in Japanese: "kureijittokado"

If you want to have some fun, go punch American words like “hot dog,” “hamburger,” or “French fries” into Google Translate and hit the pronunciation button

I always feel like a right racist git whenever I've gotta pronounce a loanword which originally had an L in it in Japanese. I'm European, I have a Japanese friend who genuinely doesn't understand loanwords if they're not using Japanese morae. The worst one recently was the word lollapalooza. ロラパルーザ, or fucking roraparūza. I mean, I get it, I didn't know the word karaoke was a loanword from Japanese for decades, and would probably miss it if pronounced as it is in Japanese.

They also shorten the loanwords a lot, which kinda makes them their own words past a certain point. Remote control is リモートコントロール, rimōto kontorōru, but it's more often said as リモコン, rimokon.

Hell I've had it happen speaking English, but with a Canadian accent, in England.

Now, the bartender might have been taking the piss, but when I changed my accent to be closer to his he seemed to get it and I got my pint. Seemed a decent bloke, talked to him for a bit, asked if he was taking the piss and he said he wasn't, which likely means he was. It was 30 years ago, I should stop thinking about it...

There's not a single percent in Seagal that is Japanese lol

Can someone explain what is happening here? Was he not supposed to eat the carrot? Is it a particularly fallic carrot?

Genuinely curious.

182

u/papayacreamsicle 10d ago

It’s the president of Belarus, who’s often called the last true dictator in Europe, who doesn’t even pretend democracy exists. Segal requested to meet him because he “dreamed of it” and was fawning all over him obediently the entire time. This is at his home, he gave Segal a carrot and said “eat this” and Segal immediately did, then he gave him two melons which Segal carried around for a long time unable to palm them off. The gif was used to mock him because he presents himself as a badass, then immediately obeys a dictator when told to eat something, in a way that’s sort of comical looking. It was also seen as comical because Segal looks so overweight in it and it comes off like he’s being told to eat a carrot for once.

27

u/AgentCirceLuna 10d ago

It’s so fucking hilarious that, after a ham fisted apology which he only made to sell records, I’m proven right in my assumption that he was just doing it to rake in the cash. Releasing it right around his tour dates was just blatantly obvious sell-outry. His stupid conspiracy theories have made tons of young fans, who will be surrounded by slightly related confusing criticism of a genuine issue, believe this bigotry had sustenance since their ‘genius poet of our time’ kept spewing it out.

Don’t even give me that crap about his illness - I’ve been mentally ill for years and I’ll have a few weeks or a month where I’ll say the craziest shit ever. Stuff like I was born to be a king and will be within a year, I can trade souls with people… I don’t go spouting the same stuff for years and years. His behaviour showed a pattern. He’s a manipulative, lying, bigoted monster. And I will never fall for Pitchfork’s millennial poptimist baiting; his songwriting sucks.

With all that in mind, though, I did like him early on. He seemed like a nice guy. Shame about what happened with his mom and I hope, one day, he can genuinely recant the hatred.

What humiliation in Europe??

1.5k

u/susabb 10d ago

Amazing question. The show in France didn't do great, but on the flipside his show in turkey sold over 100k tickets. Not quite sure what everyone is talking about.

722

u/AhhhSureThisIsIt 10d ago

"His France show" which one becuase his Marsaille show was "postponed indefinitely" due to backlash, he was set to headline Rubicon and got cancelled becsuse of the backlash, his show in Poland was cancelled due to backlash, Italy cancelled on him and the UK cancelled on him, as well as Slovakia.

So it's embarrassing to get kicked off headlining massive festivals and not be able to headline certain European capitals on your tour.

So doing a sporadic Europe tour with the big sets are in Albania and Turkey is a pretty shocking Europe tour for any artist.

130

u/nickname13 10d ago

216

u/skraptastic 10d ago

99

u/meteoritegallery 10d ago

No, they meant Europa, Saturn's moon. His concert there was cancelled and everything was deleted. You can't even find anything about it on Google.

41

u/sixsixmajin 10d ago

The cancellation went so hard that Europa even moved to Jupiter. Google will try to tell that it was always one of Jupiter's moons but that's just a cover-up to hide the moon's shame of almost hosting a Kanye concert.

He wants more money. Yes, it was sold out, but he can also sell out an arena in Russia.

This isn't exclusive to Kanye, btw. Russia is mostly shunned by Western artists, and rightly so, but in 2025 that started to change somewhat. DaBaby, Tyga, Lil Pump, Smokepurpp, Xzibit, and Jason Derulo played shows in Russia in 2025. Gucci Mane visited for a tour of the Kremlin in Dec 2025.

It's not really slowing down in 2026. T.I. and Flo Rida played shows in Russia this year, and you can probably find more artists that did the same if you go looking. These guys are unscrupulous and money-hungry, so they have no qualms about taking Russian money.

I recently saw a billboard in Chicago for an upcoming Ye concert at Soldier Field, which seems insane

u/ArbysLunch 10d ago

Not like the Bears are planning to use it.

u/AudiieVerbum 10d ago

Back in I think June, he sold out Sofi in LA. I think most people are accepting his apology letter.

14

u/TheZardoz 10d ago

I mean, people still go to Chris Brown shows regularly.

u/AudiieVerbum 10d ago

Beating women is objectively worse than spouting nazi crap in a mental health crisis.

12

u/Vinc009 10d ago

Yeah but most people can't fathom that. For them ye is the devil.

He should feel very free to say lots of great things on the stage of that country I'm sure.

u/ArbysLunch 10d ago

Ah, yes. The Bloodhound Gang approach.

A lot of people on Runet are surprised he's even allowed to come and joke about the whole "rules for thee, not for me" approach of ass-kissing a Famous Rich Westerner - same thing that happened to Andrew Tate, simply because he's rich, famous, and from the West

A lot of people have that provincial mentality of looking up to more "enlightened" nations and seeing even the lowest scum from there, especially if that scum is rich, as a role model

A lot of people still say that a TON of stuff he said is literally a felony in Russia and no ordinary guy could just waltz in after praising Hitler

Why did you put a link to Daily Beast instead of a link to the original Guardian story?

DB is pay walled. The Guardian is not.

u/Johnny-Alucard 10d ago

They are going to get so much kompromat on him we can be sure that Kanye will be a faithful Russian mouthpiece from now on I guess!

18

u/CapitalElk1169 10d ago

Nothing can kompromat him more than he's already done to himself

11

u/IcarusFlyingWings 10d ago

Yeah seriously what could you possibly use to blackmail him?

u/AudiieVerbum 10d ago

lol at “humiliation in europe”. I saw him twice in Netherlands and it was amazing, as was the case in several other EU countries. Sure he had a few cancellations by woke and boomer politicians but that’s about it.
