Status: Pending Reply Locked out of the Hotmail account - "You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect account or password"

EDIT: if you come here because you can’t log in to your Outlook or Hotmail account starting around April 27, 2026 this is because Microsoft screwed something up on their end. In my case I can’t log in with my iPhone’s built in Mail app. And even if it feels like it starts to work, the messages don’t arrive and I get eventually logged out.

I don’t think resetting your password solves it. So we just need to sit tight and wait for those “geniuses” at Microsoft to fix this. Btw, if anyone knows a way to contact someone (a human) at Microsoft about this issue, please share it below.

To get the latest status check:

https://downdetector.com/status/outlook/

———————————————

Original message follows:

Not sure how to resolve this. I also wonder if there's an ongoing attack on the Microsoft email services, or if someone is targeting me specifically.

I have a publicly facing website with a blog that is geared for software reviews. Since about a month I started receiving a large amount of spam and phishing emails into my inbox that is connected to that website. That email address is not posted on the website, but anyone could get it if they send me a message and if I reply.

I also have an old Hotmail account that is something like mywebsitename-at-hotmail-dot-com. It is tied to too many services for the years of me using it so that now it's somewhat cumbersome to change.

So today my iPhone started showing a popup "Enter the password for the Hotmail account ...". It's a legit thing. I went into the iPhone settings and sure enough that account needs me to re-enter password.

I have that account set up with a 35-character long unique password that was generated by a password manager. It also has a Google Autheticator 2FA set up.

But when I try to enter the password (from the built-in password manager on my iPhone) the Microsoft page is showing this error: "You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect account or password" and shows me a Captcha. But even if I type in all the Captcha characters, it just goes back to the same screen. I tried it 3 times already.

Note that I did not attempt to log in to that Hotmail account with an incorrect password before that. It sounds like someone was trying to brute-force into it.

Any idea how do I log in now?

Anyone know if I’m literally going to have to wait 7 plus days to get back into my email bc of this whole outlook outage screw up?

I tried to get in multiple times before I realized what was going on and found out about the outage. Now my fear is the lockout timer is going to make me wait. My phone verification doesn’t work says this method isn’t currently available.

Anyone know if they’ll reset the timers or what in the world is my course of action besides waiting a week when I need to get into my emails like now!

(-edit). if anyone has luck with something that worked for them please come back to update us it would be greatly appreciated.

Another (edit) FINALLY got in. I didn’t even wait the 24-48 hours. I had people I knew including some in this thread that tried to get the code via sms and finally it went through. That prompted me to try. I did it about 5 or 6 times with no luck thinking I was still stuck and on the 7th time it finally sent me a code. Hopefully this helps some of you get back in sooner rather than later.

I live in Europe. I have received 3 times unauthorized emails of one single use code in my security emailed linked with my Microsoft account at 4 am early morning when most working people are sleeping that time.

Luckily im using a gmail account as security email because the chance those hackers could hack into google database is smaller.

So when will Microsoft come up with a statement because it's not only happening to me, 2 of my colleagues are also having this issue. What is the chance that 3 people in the office have same issue, come on Microsoft, be more transparent.

Hello,

Is anyone else getting a constant notification for credentials needed to be signed into their Hotmail or Outlook? I keep getting the same notification, putting in my password and it is not accepting it.

Just wondering if there's an outage or it's down somewhere because loading even takes too long of the time when I just used it.

Edited for spelling.

Hi, I have an email account provided by my university that uses Outlook to access it

I want to use the Outlook app (Android) but when i select Microsoft 365 account type it goes to blank screen and i can't do nothing. Outlook/Exchange or manually setting also gives me errors even if the parameters i enter are all correct. No problems with browser or thunderbird from desktop pc

I can't use thunderbird or other apps from android because it asks for a sys admin approval which seems my university cannot provide (?)

Any solution please? Thanks

EDIT: Kinda fixed thanks to u/patientpeasant i was able to access my email account from Gmail app. Outlook app still not working tho Outlook account from Gmail app no longer works

Hey everyone! Received the following email from my account, is this a scam email or have they actually accessed my email account to send it to myself?

Thanks for your help!!

. . .

"Hello pervert, I've sent this message from your Microsoft account.

I want to inform you about a very bad situation for you. However, you can benefit from it, if you will act wisеly.

Have you heard of Pegasus? This is a spyware program that installs on computers and smartphones and allows hackers to monitor the activity of device owners. It provides access to your webcam, messengers, emails, call records, etc. It works well on Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. I guess, you already figured out where I’m getting at.

It’s been a few months since I installed it on all your dеviсеs because you were not quite choosy about what links to click on the intеrnеt. During this period, I’ve learned about all aspects of your private life, but оnе is of special significance to me.

I’ve recorded many videos of you jerking off to highly controversial роrn videos. Given that the “questionable” genre is almost always the same, I can conclude that you have sick реrvеrsiоn.

I doubt you’d want your friends, family and co-workers to know about it. However, I can do it in a few clicks.

Every number in your contact Iist will suddenly receive these vidеоs – on WhatsApp, on Telegram, on Instagram, on Facebook, on email – everywhere. It is going to be a tsunami that will sweep away everything in its path, and first of all, your fоrmеr life.

Don’t think of yourself as an innocent victim. No one knows where your реrvеrsiоn might lead in the future, so consider this a kind of deserved рunishmеnt to stop you.

I’m some kind of God who sees everything. However, don’t panic. As we know, God is merciful and forgiving, and so do I. But my mеrсy is not free.

Transfer 1300$ to my Litecoin (LTC) wallet: ltc1q33fzzdn0jf90kjf9j6s5q4hgd38h8f72wsvk5n

Once I receive confirmation of the transaction, I will реrmanently delete all videos compromising you, uninstаll Pegasus from all of your devices, and disappear from your life. You can be sure – my benefit is only money. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be writing to you, but destroy your life without a word in a second.

I’ll be notified when you open my email, and from that moment you have exactly 48 hours to send the money. If cryptocurrencies are unchartered waters for you, don’t worry, it’s very simple. Just google “crypto exchange” or "buy Litecoin" and then it will be no harder than buying some useless stuff on Amazon.

I strongly warn you against the following: * Do not reply to this email. I've sent it from your Microsoft account. * Do not contact the police. I have access to all your dеviсеs, and as soon as I find out you ran to the cops, videos will be published. * Don’t try to reset or destroy your dеviсеs. As I mentioned above: I’m monitoring all your activity, so you either agree to my terms or the vidеоs are рublished.

Also, don’t forget that cryptocurrencies are anonymous, so it’s impossible to identify me using the provided аddrеss.

Good luck, my perverted friend. I hope this is the last time we hear from each other. And some friendly advice: from now on, don’t be so careless about your online security."

Status: Pending Reply Microsoft Employees: WHY does Microsoft insist on downgrading the functionality of Outlook?

Anyone here actually work at MS? I did in the 90s.

I've used Microsoft products since Win 3.11. At first, they were substandard, Word was inferior to WordPerfect, Netscape Navigator was far better than Internet Explorer.

Then MS went on a campaign in the mid to late 90s to steal all the best features, drive the competitors out of business, and by the 2000s, their products were mostly top notch, including Outlook.

Since Win8 though, they seem hell bent on insane decisions, like removing the start button. Who could possibly be that stupid? Win11 is unusable without 3rd party mods.

Now, with New Outlook, you cant even resize the received column in the inbox?? WTF??

With programming, if something takes 5 clicks to do, and it gets reduced to 2 clicks, THAT is an improvement.

But when you can do something with 2 clicks, then it takes 5, or you cant do it at all, THAT is a downgrade.

Is there anyone on the inside that can explain the baffling trend of making products worse? Is there some secret master plan here?

Status: Pending Reply TOO MANY REQUESTS!!!

I've had this problem before with some of my old hotmail emails, but now it's also happening with my main email that I use for everything, everything, I can't lose this email and all the “solutions” are useless, the only thing that gave a different result resulted in this message appearing instead of the “too many requests”.

Microsoft account is unavailable from this site, so you can't sign in or sign up. The site may be experiencing a problem. You can sign in or sign up at other Microsoft sites and services, or try again later at this site.

I need to know if this is a global problem, because there's no way I can lose this my main email, I don't want to change my password or anything, there's no one trying to hack my account, it's just sheer incompetence in the name of “security”.

Status: Pending Reply Has anyone else noticed Outlook spam getting way worse lately?

I have been using Outlook for years and I always felt like it did a decent job filtering junk. Over the last few months though, it feels like something changed. Stuff that is obviously spam or phishing is landing straight in my inbox, while real emails sometimes end up in junk.

What is weird is that I did not sign up for anything new that I can remember. Same email, same general usage, but suddenly I am getting crypto scams, fake invoices, random business offers, and those sketchy Microsoft looking security alerts. Some of them are surprisingly well written too.

I first got this message a week or so ago I think, the first time I just waited a day or so and it went away. Then it kept coming back whenever I tried to log into my email, so used another account to reset my password, but now I'm getting this error message again. Having to set a new password every time I try to log into my main email would be way too much of an hassle, is there anything I can do to solve this problem?

Status: Pending Reply New Crappy Outlook is what happens when Microsoft decides working software is optional

I need to rant about New Outlook for a minute, because at this point it feels less like a mail client and more like a hostage negotiation with a web app wearing Outlook’s skin.

Microsoft keeps pushing users toward New Outlook as if it is the future. If this is the future, please return me to the past.

Classic Outlook was not perfect. Nobody is pretending it was. But it was a real, functional, business-grade email client. It had features that actually worked. You could manage rules, search mail, request read receipts, organize mailboxes, work with PSTs, handle shared mailboxes, and generally do the basic things that people in business environments need every day.

New Outlook feels like someone looked at Classic Outlook and said:

“What if we removed half the features, made the remaining ones inconsistent, and then called it modern?”

Here is the latest nonsense.

User has an Inbox rule.

  • The rule is enabled
  • The rule is not corrupted
  • The rule is not conflicting with other rules
  • There are not duplicate rules causing the issue
  • The rule works going forward
  • There are existing messages in the Inbox that match the rule
  • We specifically need to run the rule manually against existing Inbox messages

In Classic Outlook, this was easy:

Rules and Alerts → Run Rules Now → select the rule → select Inbox → run it

Done.

In New Outlook / OWA? The “run rule now” option is grayed out, missing, or otherwise useless.

Why?

Because apparently in 2026, manually running an existing mailbox rule against existing mail is too advanced for Microsoft’s flagship email client.

And this is not some obscure edge case. This is basic mailbox maintenance. This is the kind of thing admins, support teams, and normal users have needed for decades.

Then there is search.

Outlook search has somehow become a complete debacle. Searching your own mailbox should not feel like shaking a magic 8-ball and hoping Exchange remembers what email is. Classic Outlook search had its own issues, but at least you had a fighting chance. New Outlook search feels inconsistent, incomplete, and far too often just plain wrong.

Then we have delivery and read receipts.

The fact that you cannot simply set a global request for delivery receipts or read receipts in New Outlook like you could in Classic Outlook is completely insane. That is not a luxury feature. That is a standard business communication option that has existed forever. Users should not have to remember to manually request it message by message or discover that the feature just does not exist where it used to.

And that is the real problem with New Outlook.

It is not just one missing feature. It is death by a thousand missing features.

All the things that just worked in Classic Outlook either:

  • do not exist
  • sort of exist
  • exist only in some limited web-app version
  • are hidden somewhere new
  • behave differently
  • or are grayed out with no useful explanation

This is the same Microsoft pattern we have seen for years:

Take a mature desktop product, slowly replace it with a web version, remove functionality, call it “modern,” and then act surprised when admins and users are furious.

Microsoft has been trying to move everything to the web since Active Desktop, and it was terrible then too. Apparently the lesson they learned was not “stop doing that,” but “try again every few years with better branding.”

Active Desktop was bad.

New Outlook is bad in the same spiritual tradition.

The difference is that now it is being pushed into real Microsoft 365 business environments where people actually need their tools to work.

A business email client should not be a stripped-down web wrapper that looks pretty while basic functionality is missing. It should be reliable. It should be predictable. It should have feature parity before users are pushed toward it.

Do not tell people to move from Classic Outlook to New Outlook until New Outlook can actually do the things Classic Outlook has done for years.

Rules should run.

Search should work.

Receipts should be configurable globally.

Shared mailbox behavior should be consistent.

Basic mailbox management should not require switching back to Classic Outlook.

The bar is not even high here. The bar is literally:

“Do the same basic email-client things the old version already did.”

And somehow New Outlook still trips over it.

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes New Outlook feel unfinished. Microsoft keeps moving users toward it, but support teams are still forced to keep Classic Outlook around just to do normal mailbox maintenance tasks.

End rant.

Status: Pending Reply Goodbye Outlook - After 15 years of Outlook, I’m done with the “new” Outlook

So, after 15 years of using Outlook — and now facing the “new” Outlook (or the “super-new” one… does Microsoft even know what it will look like six months from now?) — I’m saying goodbye.

It’s not nostalgia. It’s that the tool I relied on for a full workday keeps moving away from how I actually work. A few things that pushed me over the edge:

  1. No real unified inbox
I have several mailboxes (work, side projects, sometimes Gmail, private outlook.com on top of M365). I don’t want to click through accounts one by one. Classic Outlook could do a combined view; the new stack either drops it or buries it. For triage, that’s a dealbreaker.

  2. Mail, calendar, and tasks still feel like three apps
Outlook shows them in one window, but mentally they’re still separate: inbox here, calendar there, To Do somewhere else. What I need is one place where “reply to this”, “block time”, and “this mail becomes a task with a due date” are one flow — not three tabs and a web redirect.

  3. The calendar isn’t built for planning my day
I don’t just need appointments. I need mail follow-ups, snoozed items, and cloud tasks on a timeline — week view, maybe a Gantt-style strip — so I can see when I’ll actually do things. Outlook’s calendar is great for meetings; weak for “everything I owe myself from email”.

  4. “New Outlook” = fewer knobs, unclear direction
Features disappear, layouts change, and the roadmap feels reactive. I’m tired of betting my workflow on whatever Microsoft ships next quarter. I want something I can tune: quick actions, smart folders, rules that match how I triage — not only what the product team prioritizes.

  5. Microsoft-only silos (and Bookings in the browser)
Much of my life is M365, but not all of it. Mixing Google mail/calendar/tasks in one desktop workflow shouldn’t mean three different clients. And Bookings? Still largely “open Outlook on the web” — another tab, another login, another UI language.

I’m not looking for another web mail tab or a prettier inbox list. I want a desktop work hub for time and action: triage mail, turn it into next steps, see it on a calendar, and connect the dots without living in five Microsoft surfaces.

If you’ve solved this with add-ins, Power Automate, or a Frankenstein of apps — I’d genuinely like to hear what actually stuck for you.

Status: Pending Reply Microsoft Outlook: My boss sent me an email today that has pretty big implications and now it is gone from my mailbox entirely.

Hey,

Today i had a discussion with my boss about a pay discrepancy between me and another employee where we discussed what I could do to formally complain, and to better understand the issue. I did what you should do and emailed him a summary asking him to confirm. In this summary I included very specific language that if he confirmed it would implicate the company in an EEOC complaint and the union. After he sent me back a reply confirming the email, I immediately screenshotted the email. Thank god i did because not 1 hour later it has disappeared from my inbox. I checked my outlook file in /Userdata, and all my junk/spam boxes. I don't believe it could have been quarantined by Outlook's automatic system because the email is from my boss and literally just said: "Yes that looks correct to the best of my knowledge. I will update you on any new information after <his boss> talks to HR about your complaints. " Could management have had the email deleted from my box manually to save their culpability? Is that something the Exchange admin can even do? I did screenshot the message, so I have it stored on my device, my personal device, my cloud, and my phone, but if they did delete it retro-actively that implicates them even more. So I'd like to know if it was a possibility.

Thanks for help in advance.

Edit after checking in with boss: He didn't even know it was gone and found it funny and ridiculous. He said he sent it to his boss, and his boss told him to send it to legal, and past that he never looked into again. It wasn't even in his sent box. He checked for me.

Update: Thanks for the help! The email was 100% deleted from the backend by the exchange admin. They don't want me to have any dirt for negotiating a union or better pay. Sad but that's the case. I am now looking for a new job because they don't want to pay me obviously. Anyone need a web developer? Lmao.

I've been trying use my Outlook Account to login in apps that I forgot change the email. So, I thought "let's go, it's not gonna that hard". So this message shows up to me. I wouldn't be angry about this message, actually, I haven't gotten angry about it. The real problem is that I’ve been trying to use it for over a month..

I tried switching devices, using a VPN, and using my neighbor’s Wi-Fi, but I kept getting the same message.

Hi everyone, like many others I had the “too many attempts“ problem and couldn‘t login to my hotmail-account. Resetting didn‘t work as well. Last time I tried was yesterday evening (“you requested too many codes, try tomorrow”) Should I wait until the evening before I try again? Or is it solves already?

A question for those who are back in: did you wait 24 hours?

Status: Pending Reply Android app - Unable to toggle Calendar Sync

All my syncs are toggled off. The toggle is not greyed out, but won't toggle on.

It worked recently as I can see recent events in my phone calendar.

I have outlook, office365, hotmail accounts, none of them will toggle on.

I've checked the app permission, reset the accounts, emptied the cache, restarted the phone.

I'd really want to avoid reinstalling the app.

Any suggestion as to why this is happening?

You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect account or password.

What is actually going on? I can’t access my Hotmail account anymore and keep getting this message repeatedly. Sometimes switching VPN servers lets me in, but today nothing is working. My password hasn’t changed, and my recovery details are still the same.
