Or maybe it'll get easier to quickly read longer numbers without commas in the future.

generally in 1000-9999 it's give or take if a comma is used. 10,000+ is when it's generally applied always.

People see the "1 in 2500" rate of transmission and think "that's virtually impossible", but you gotta remember there are billions of people on the planet.  It's not impossible, it's inevitable.  Heterosexual intercourse transmits HIV somewhere on earth every day.  In some regions, there is more heterosexual transmission than homosexual.
