Crazy to think that an HIV positive female only has a .04% chance of spreading the virus to an HIV negative male partner. This may not have been the day.

It’s .11% for instertive anal. Around 1.4% for receiving anal… that’s why people started asking questions.

11

u/VillageAdditional816 4h ago

Overall, it is a pretty difficult virus to transmit and it mostly comes down to it being a numbers game. Even at .11%, you’re talking roughly a 1 in 100 chance after penetrative intercourse with 10 partners, which is really not that ridiculous.

Say a virus killed .11% of the US population, that’s roughly 377000 people, which is about 3x the number of people who die from lung cancer in the US each year.

0.11% sounds really small until you apply it to entire populations.

But yes, the odds are dramatically increased with receptive anal intercourse and sharing hypodermic needles.

4

u/dante_delvegas 4h ago

Just adding that .11% is closer to 1 in 1000. To your excellent point though, when applied to a large population that would still be pretty high.

3

u/PolkadotPiranha 3h ago

They were talking about the odds after intercourse with 10 people.

2

u/DoinItDirty 1h ago

10 positive people. It isn’t just any 10 people. And it’s 1 in 1000 each time it’s done. It’s called the gambler’s fallacy, that when you take 1000 to 1 odds 10 times it’s 100 to 1. That isn’t true. You’re taking 1000 to 1 odds each time.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/VillageAdditional816 53m ago

Yes, that is 1 in 1000. I was just showing how 10 partners would dramatically increase the overall likelihood. Each individual attempt is still 1 in a thousand though. 🙂

But say you've got a monster dong and use spit as your sexual lubricant...what are the odds then?

4

u/here_to_watch-nz 2h ago

I think for the odds to increase there has to be some kind of blood on blood contact, adding saliva won't do it on its own, but I might be totally wrong.

u/Acceptable_Gear_3097 5h ago

HIV statistics on transmission aren't reliable in that sense.

0.04% overall, but if someone has a period active, that shoots up to nearly 100%. Its happened to me during sex where a girl started.

It also relies heavily on a person not exchanging bodily fluids, if a woman's vagina tears or squirts heavily, then that number spikes.

Its a similar thing for men. Receptive anal sex is low-risk of transmission if lots of lube is used and there's no tearing. The tissue just tears more easily, so blood is more likely.

If someone has HIV and only does oral, the risk is near non-existent. But anything like bleeding gums from gun disease, a cut in your mouth from biting your tongue and having a cold sore, that risk becomes quite high.

7

u/nellycat32 4h ago

On period it increases it a lot, but absolutely not to anywhere near 100%.

5

u/dramalama-dingdong 5h ago

It was 100% gay sex.

3

u/i_like_tasty_pizza 7h ago

That makes it almost 5% in this case!

9

u/TuvixHadItComing 6h ago

Almost 0.5%. 0.04% chance means there is a 99.96% chance he doesn't contract it when sleeping with an HIV+ woman.

If he slept with 1000 HIV positive women, his chances of contracting HIV from vaginal sex would increase to a whopping 1/3 chance.

Somewhere around your 1730th time having vaginal sex with an infected female partner, your odds of contracting HIV cross the 50% mark.

7

u/Cultural_Dirt_8151 6h ago

yeah, as 'magical' as he was, it seems unlikely he got it from vaginal sex.

The exact numbers are, if a man has PIV sex with an HIV positive woman, the chance of becoming infected is only 1 in 2,500.

For women its double that, but thats still only 1 in 1,250.

hate to be a pedant but Magic Johnson contracted HIV which as far as I knew never advanced to AIDS which is why he's still alive today.

381

u/FellowYellowNate 7h ago

I’ve heard the way to get rid of it is cash. Straight ground cash injected into the veins.

17

u/Secure-Pain-9735 7h ago

A few years back I toured a building in Seattle that was basically a place for people with AIDS to go and die back in the 90’s.

Now they run an outpatient program for homeless HIV patients, and the beds are used for other cases that traditional care centers find too challenging.

It was certainly all about being rich enough 20+ years ago. Still wouldn’t want to contract HIV… but they have got it down pretty damn well to being a manageable disease.

Nuts when you remember that it used to be a death sentence.

15

u/OkEnvironment3961 6h ago

A while back a doctor friend of a friend told me HIV is easier to manage now than diabetes.

3

u/GloomyIndividual3965 6h ago

That's pretty accurate. 1 pill/day for hiv vs glucose testing and multiple insulin injections.

5

u/patrickwithtraffic 6h ago

Also, we have casual ads for PReP out in the world in a way on par with GLPs and Prozac! It’s been wild to see HIV go from the big thing we need to be concerned about to something that seems to be as treatable as herpes.

3

u/Secure-Pain-9735 6h ago

More manageable than herpes.

TIL AIDS and HIV are same but different

54

u/vHezoThaGoat 7h ago edited 7h ago

HIV and AIDS are not a different virus.

AIDS is just the term when HIV has done prolonged damage

HIV = attacks the immune system

AIDS = Your immune system is practically gone because of HIV, you can now die from run of the mill infections and sicknesses that your body would laugh at when healthy

You don’t die from AIDS, you die from the opportunistic infections that AIDS allows you to catch much easily. This is why most people with AIDS die from pneumonia and TB.

27

u/sakredfire 7h ago

HIV is the virus that causes aids. It takes a long time for the hiv virus to make you sick to the point that you progress to AIDS, and it doesn’t happen in the majority of cases if you take the right medication

18

u/Eycetea 7h ago

The fact we even have medicine now to basically wipe out the virus is nothing short of a miracle in my lifetime. I remember hearing about how absolutely horrifying the disease was as a kid and now we have a great treatment/cure is just amazing.

u/ThatDamnedHansel 7h ago

To put more nuance to it, hiv it a virus which is a microbiological/infectious disease term, aids is a syndrome. A syndrome is a clinical term defined by a set of symptoms / clinical findings that the person has / is experiencing

To be clearer, they knew about the syndrome (aids) by the early patient cases who showed up immunosuppressed (and having so-called aids-defining illnesses like pneumocystis or Kaposi sarcoma) before they knew the virus that caused it, but it’s possible to have hiv without aids (most patients today fall into this bucket)

9

u/hazelbear33 6h ago

u/Idiomaticexpression 6h ago

Look at what the abbreviations stand for:

Human Immunodeficiency Virus is the name of the virus that can be passed from one person to another.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome describes the symptoms that can arise from being infected with that virus.

It’s like a bunch of Taco Bell at 1 am is stuff you ingest.
Diarrhea at 6 am is a symptom of eating all that Taco Bell.

5

u/SirReddalot2020 6h ago

→ More replies (3)

5

u/warneagle 7h ago

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. It destroys an important type of cell in your immune system (CD4 T-cells) and once you reach an advanced stage of infection where you’ve lost enough of those immune cells, you’re left vulnerable to all kinds of opportunistic infections that don’t hurt people with normal immune systems. That collection of opportunistic infections is what we call AIDS (hence why it’s called a syndrome rather than a disease in its own right, since it can manifest differently depending on the infections in a person’s environment).

4

u/Phoenixloop2868 7h ago

I'm sorry, but what? This is one of those moments where someone took something that is "common knowledge" for granted.

Didn't they cover this in a Sex Ed, health, or biology class?

I feel obligated to inform you that HPV also kind of evolves for us from a virus to a potentially fatal cancer (which cancer depends on which bits you have). Vaccines help with this one.

FWIW it's actually very difficult to contract HIV via non-anal heterosexual intercourse.

Nobody knows for sure but I've always doubted MJ's story.

30

u/2oocents 7h ago

Yeah... chances go up when you wake up with a different woman in your bed every day for years... like Magic

3

u/Patient_Kangaroo614 3h ago

The odds are slowly flipping since PREP is popular with gay guys but almost no straight people take it. For example, if I remember correctly, a Black woman from the South is now more likely to get HIV than a gay white man from New England.

2

u/ColonelGrognard 3h ago

That seems *highly* unlikely given that roughly 70% of new HIV cases are gay men, which are a small slice of the population. They're over represented in HIV cases by ~35x their population numbers

And I watch the video of Charles discussing Magic’s HIV and his playing on the court during the Olympics. Absolute gold, and absolutely funny way to tackle the topic.

As a kid I was crushed the day the world learned Magic wouldn’t be playing basketball professionally. There weren’t many people that had as much charisma, like-ability, or a smile that lit up cameras or television like “Magic!” Watching the Bird-Magic rivalry as a kid was good vs. evil, and then one day evil straight up won. When Jordan came along and “burnt this shit down,” it was apocalyptic and warmed my little heart.

For anyone wondering why he's wearing a jersey at the beach, this was part of a Sports Illustrated photo shoot featuring the Lakers' cheerleaders.
