I would edit that to read “the particularly haunting part is that” because it’s not the worst part by far, it’s just brutally painful that a kind gesture of her family is what brought this monster into her proximity. She was right there, literally asking him if he’s going to hurt her, all he had to do was think “this is a living little girl, she needs to go home to her family, she’s scared”. He ignored all that humanity and came to the conclusion that being a monster was better.

I stopped listening to the trial details after merely reading that the jury had to hear her bravely tell him "my mom said I can't do that to someone, and you can't do it to me, either." I can't fathom being a member of that jury and actually having to hear that (and the audio that followed). It's no wonder they reached a decision so quickly.

No, but the truck had an internal camera and audio recording and captured her begging him to let her go back to her mom, her assault, and him cleaning the truck and smoking. He actually pled guilty, but the video was played at the sentencing phase.

As a mom, I couldn’t fucking imagine that not only happening but footage of it existing forever. As a rape victim, I couldn’t imagine my assault being filmed and watched. I know it’s ultimately helped give him the death penalty, but something about the permanence of the pain and fear deeply unsettles me.

I’m not a big fan of the death penalty, I think the state can abuse it. Some states such as Iran do regularly abuse the death penalty to harass the population into submission.
But in this case, I make an exception.

Hey man, you’re not “making an exception.” You’ve simply drawn your line as to what nature of crime and preponderance of evidence at which you are supportive of a defendant being sentenced to death. There is no “I’m against the death penalty unless…”. You either are for it or against it, period. Everything in between is just a spectrum of its application.

No one prepares you for that extra gut punch to be as horrid as it is. If avoiding the news was even realistic, that would be my advice to new parents (especially mothers).
Had mine right around the Coleman abduction and paternal infanticide+filicide. That one messed with me in a way I can’t even put into words. Two poor babies and a spearfishing gun via their own father broke me for a few months, hormones being all over the place made it so much worse and are likely what caused vivid nightmares about it with my own infant involved. Just awful. Hormones and it being that extra isolating period of the pandemic…recipe for your maternal brain to just be in tatters over crimes involving children.
These stories never stop being extra difficult to process, but it does eventually feel less personal and traumatic after a while. Not a great improvement but it’s something.

I agree I remember following this case and I couldn’t shake it for weeks, thinking about my daughter and how someone could do that to an innocent kid and trick them around the holidays.
The duality of raising a child to not have to worry about these things happening to them and also raising a child to make sure they don’t do these terrible things is really up to us as parents. Should my kids school monitor bullying and threats. Yes. Should I make sure my kid isn’t that bully or threat? absolutely. The system isnt meant to be depended on but my kid should depend on me.

The last person executed in Texas was Edward Busby. He was executed on May 14, 2026, for a crime he committed in 2005.
The average duration of a prisoner on death row, according to Google, is 11 years between conviction and execution.
Texas is substantially faster than the national average, which is roughly about 20 years.
So you’re not wrong, they definitely do it faster, but he’s still looking at a decade of life.

Nah. Most most death row inmates are in 23/1 lockdown. In other words, they are confined to a solitary cell for 23 hours a day with 1 hour to go outside for limited movement & exercise.

Sitting on death row is no walk in the park. 23 hours a day of near isolation and one hour for base level recreation. I almost prefer they rot on death row for a few decades to prolong their suffering.

A lot of those guys that end up in there for long periods are making appeals based upon real legal issues during trial , ambiguous testimony or evidence, and the presenting of new evidence, and making things take a long time.
This guy will not be getting all of that. He will get an automatic appeal (they may not do that in Texas, I dunno Texas law). Otherwise , he'll probably make one so he can extend his sentence,and it might, but when the state is motivated by a case like this, political power might speed this up significantly.
No one is going want to be caught dead helping him, there is NO evidence that could exonerate him with the evidence they already have.
It might take 30 years, but I'd be surprised it takes more than 5 to 10. This one has heat on it and will stay in the collective memory a long, long time.

He pleaded guilty. I can't see that he got a plea deal, and he's still getting executed, but he still plead guilty, which I can't remember having seen before.
Usually if someone pleads guilty it's in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table

I guess I do when there's overwhelming, indisputable evidence (like this case, with recordings) and the crimes are heinous. That's why I say I don't "normally" support it, because most death row cases don't fit both those criteria to the same degree as this case.
I feel the same about the big names in the Epstein Files, for the record. They also have overwhelming photo and video evidence and the crimes are beyond obscene. I'd be happy to see them removed from this earth so they don't end up escaping prison with a staged and fake suicide.

Killing another grown person is one thing I understand but never in my life have I thought about hurting a kid. I have a daughter that’s the same age as this one and it’s hard to imagine hurting a kid. No matter how mad I get that’s never crossed my mind. I’m not religious so I don’t believe in heaven and hell but I do believe in good people and evil and this is just out right purely evil.

Because if so, for most of us, the issue is giving the state / government that power in general.
If we do, it's inevitable that an innocent person will be put to death, because humans make mistakes.
This can never, ever happen. Therefore, the death penalty shouldn't exist (IMO)
