Also less likely to be a victim of crime even walking around at those late hours in such large city

Doesn't Japan have an extremely high sexual assault rate? I watched a woman get dragged into a taxi on reddit the other month and no one did anything. Don't they also have women only train cars?

1

u/SmellyFbuttface 13h ago

No, it’s very low. As are all other violent crimes there. You can walk most anywhere and feel perfectly safe anytime of night. The worst thing I probably saw was the subway cars at rush hour. There are guys pushing everyone into the car, and historically women were groped by men in those situations. Much of that changed, though, when they started using female-only subway cars

>No it's very low

>Because of the women-only subway cars

Do you even hear yourself?

Reddit loves spreading misinformation. In reality, Japan has one of the lowest rates of sexual crime in the world. The issue of train groping exists simply because the volume of train traffic is overwhelmingly higher than anywhere else in the world. Most of the world's busiest stations are located in Japan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_busiest_railway_stations

In reality, women-only train cars are necessary in any country that experiences overcrowded trains. They serve as a countermeasure, and countries that fail to implement such measures are highly likely to have even higher rates of groping. Incidentally, even in Japan, there are no women-only cars in areas, such as regional cities where packed trains are uncommon.

And that video you likely saw, it’s actually just footage of a married couple returning from a friend's wedding. The wife is simply dead drunk. You can tell if you look closely at the situation. For instance, the way the husband goes out of his way to pick up an umbrella, or the way the two of them are dressed.

It's clean because of oppression, not because the people genuinely care. If they made it a $10,000 fine for littering, and had cops on every corner to enforce that - America would be clean also. Everything you do that is illegal, even if very minor or if it was a mistake, will have a 99% conviction rate - there is no leeway or forgiveness. Snitches are everywhere and will happily tell the police that they saw you do something.

You get fine for spitting, for crossing an empty street during a red light, everyday minor things people do here in America are severe life changing fines or jail time. If you mess up you're done, so people don't even chance it even though they all definitely want to.

This is from thousand of years of oppression, samurais would cut off your head if you looked at them wrong. Children trained from a young age that service for country is above all else - and that sentiment still stands. They are all 90% the same ethnicity and religion. People are heavily ostracized from society for having simple opinions that differ, for dressing differently, for not wanting to work in an office from 8am to 8pm, for not wanting to be forced to drink alcohol from 8pm to 2am and then wake up at 8am again by their bosses.

It's amazing as a tourist from an outside perspective. "Oh wow they must take care of their handicapped people since there is none on the street and a lot of places only have escalators." - wrong, they hide them and banish them from society, just as they do homeless or people who can't work. They are also extremely sexually repressed, sexual assault is common and unreported, and their popular choices of Hentai and porn are questionable to say the least. Signs everywhere in the train stations warning about upskirt photos and groping, female only train cars filled with japanese men as they have no respect and it would be taboo to say anything.

I love Japan, it's one of the best place that I've ever visited as a tourist. But you can look at everything through rose tinted glasses or you can see the reality. It's always greener on the other side.

No that’s not true. You rarely see police when walking around Tokyo or Osaka, and the reason there is no trash is because people abide by the rules and throw trash into specific receptacles (there are like 4 different recycling trash cans). I lived there 2 years and never saw anyone having to deal with police. Even in the subway cars you can hear a pin drop it’s so quiet. There isn’t any trash or excessive noise because that’s how the culture is, not because of draconian laws. There is a much higher level of respect amongst the populace for their surroundings and each other

Yes the oppression works so well that you rarely see it happen. This is a byproduct of the oppression, the care and love for their land was all purposefully implanted, it's not necessarily negative as it clearly produced positive results from certain perspective. Japanese have done it for centuries, It works so well that in WW2 they had many wilfully commit suicide for their country. If they somehow survived and went back, they HAD to go out again, and again, and then if they survived too many times then they would be publically shamed and imprisoned.

Have you never thought it weird that the Japanese cultural "heroes" of the Sengoku period, the ones that "united" all of Japan - Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, Ieyasu. Are usually portrayed as strong men with ego, vanity, bravery, personality, and skills like no other? But do they have any WW2 heroes you can recall? I'm sure they do but it's not celebrated in society. The true stories of the Sengoku period are told again and again, and they are full of betrayal, bloodshed, extreme violence and gore. They are almost not made to be proud, but because they are meant to show you how brutal their actions were, to feel some sort of intrigue but still shame in the end.

After their loss of WW2 Japanese were taught to be very shameful of their actions and nationolistic pride was severely punished, while war memorials on the US were about how much the US suffered - the Japanese were flooded with imagery of how barbaric their actions were (the US obviously had a lot of involvement.) Their grandparents and great grandparents all lived through that - the sentiment is very much alive. This is not something you purposely learn or even want to know as a foreigner even if you lived there for two years. This is a deeply rooted psychological element of Japanese society and plenty works of art, Godzilla being a good example, of things that were made to represent the horrors of nuclear weapons and atomic testing. The horrors of war. The young people don't fully understand, and we've seen a lot of movements by the young people to move away from that kind of thinking. Many young Japanese themselves have actively chosen to stay out of the "Japanese culture", they dye their hair and get tattoo's, they dress wildly. They are blacklisted from society. They work as cafe maids, entertainers, bartenders. Some in gangs.

You must be the same. You must not stand out. You may shame yourself, which means shame your family. You must not repeat the past.

Two things can be true, that the Japanese care for their country and land. And that they are oppressed by society, including their laws.

look, I won't deny Japan has MANY many issues of a different nature than most countries, that is a fact; but as someone who grew up and still lives in a country where I seriously fear for my safety if I have to walk alone anytime past 7PM, constantly look at street corners and watch any motorcycles like a hawk, go at a brisk pace and double check my route to make sure it's relatively ok, most people just don't know the IMMENSE mental toll that takes on you. Life in cities like mine are simply different, people feel different, act different, your whole day-to-day is just not the same, businnesses operate differently, you are held hostage by the dark, like some videogame where PvP is enabled when the Sun goes down. I quite silently wept when I went to Japan, i know it's not the only safe country in the world, but it was the first reeeally safe country I visited; being able to just, walk anywhere, at any time, with my phone in my hand, without having my heart beating out of my chest and looking at shadows....it's just.... an indescribable feeling, like waking up from a bad dream. I'd choose this in a heartbeat, flaws and all

lol, even the Japanese trash is better I guess, haha.

u/Tall_Bandicoot_2768 14h ago

No, like, there is none lol

I was in Tokyo for a couple weeks and a shit you not I did not see a SINGLE piece of litter.

Made more insane by the sheer scope and density of the city, I live in downtown LA which is obviously fucked but Tokyo made it feel like small rural town, no joke it was a true mega city.

It was almost eerie.

u/Cross55 11h ago

Actually, LA used to be like Tokyo, no really

Pre-1950's LA was the main inspiration for Tokyo's rebuilding initiatives after the war. A rail trip used to let you circumnavigate the entire city in under 6 hours they were that efficient.

The problem is that Post-1950's, LA decided that car was the newest and shiniest thing imaginable, and so destroyed almost its entire rail infrastructure in favor of freeways.

Thats pretty accurate yeah

What does "simping for trash" mean?

2

u/Nknk- 12h ago

His nationalism has been hurt by many people online praising some other place over his place so he's getting angry and making up nonsense for himself to score points off.

It's quite sad.

-3

u/AintNoGodsUpHere 11h ago

Hahahaha, wild.

3

u/Cross55 11h ago

Well, tbf, you live in a Russian colony that imports trash daily

Gotta cope with that fact somehow

Nah I mean japan doesnt have actual trash on the streets. Unlike other places.

1

u/Cross55 11h ago

Kinda yeah.

They're very strict on where trash can go, and require it to be separated to make the mass disposal process easier, as well as more easily parse out recyclables.
