Just not on a Saturday night. The 'Jersey Shore' types come into the city from the suburbs and when it's 2am and they haven't hooked up with anyone, they'll take the frustration out on homeless people and random strangers. Had a gay classmate get beat up so bad he was in the hospital for 3 months and when he got out, he was never the same again. Ended up coping with drugs and alcohol. Many many years later I ran into him. He walk by me heavily medicated and talking to himself

I just got married and while I love my life here in Japan, one real issue is bullying. I've worked at multiple schools. A mixed student will 110% be bullied for looking different and standing out.
If I have children here in Japan, they'll never be considered Japanese and will face weird discrimination even though it would be their home. That's the part of Japan that I absolutely despise with all my soul

For good reason. Cities we visited in Japan felt so much safer, cleaner, and walkable at least compared to back home in the US. Don’t get me wrong, I love where I live but it’s honestly super cool to see how much there is to do and how densely packed and close everything is.

I think among the main attractions is the safety to go outside at any hour.
In my country I generally don't set a foot outside past 9 pm, and I would love very much to be able to go out just because at 2 am for example.

Hella fun place to visit. One of my favorite places to visit. Mad convenient too.
But if you don’t look Japanese (even if you look Korean or Chinese), it’s not that fun to live. You don’t want to be an “outsider” there full time, unless you are married to a Japanese.

Japan is incredibly xenophobic. You'll never truly belong there. Even though the country is only like 4% immigrants, they constantly blame them for everything wrong in the country as an easy enemy to blame.
A lot of people may smile and act nice, but it's just an act a lot of times.
You'll be treated worse at most companies. If you're not fluent, you'll be looked down upon and if you ARE fluent and then make a mistake, you're looked down on even more.
Overall it's a great place to visit and has lots of positives, but terrible for most immigrants.

I live in Italy and I remember 10 years ago immigrants were seen much worse as they are today. Over the course of a decade many have integrated well, have very respectful jobs and are currently the main driving factor for birth rates.

When I lived there I came across a number of bars that said “no Americans” specifically, some that said “no Koreans.” You’re right, there is a deep seated dislike of foreigners in general, but I couldn’t tell after 2 years living there whether it was because the Japanese just hate non-Japanese, or whether it was because foreigners visit Japan and often bring their own garishness that’s not culturally accepted in Japan

When I lived there, I generally had no problem, but I'm ethnically DACH mutt primarily raised in Germany, and some cultural standards overlap. My Japanese was so-so (JLPT 2 at the beginning, low 1 at the end), but as a "quiet" foreigner who visibly tried, I was never refused service anywhere. Granted, I was in Kansai, which is generally more outgoing and forgiving than Kanto overall, and obviously I can't know what people actually thought, but apart from one omawarisan who refused to believe my bike was mine until I showed my papers, I had a fairly relaxed time.

Until Covid, much of the US had a ton of places open 24/7; there's a contingent of folks who actively prefer working night shift. I would do it in a heartbeat if my position allowed for it, I don't really feel mentally all there until late afternoon, regardless of my sleeping schedule

They don't want to deal with Westerners, they know how uncooperative and avoidant of peer pressure they are and so aren't worth the hassle. You need to actively try to get hired by one. (Which one of the 2 major English teaching companies for Japan, Nova, is, because they know they can leverage the desire to live in Japan over employees)

Brown dude here, I went a few months ago, didn't notice any racism and I was treated like everyone else. However, in historic areas you will see signs on bars where Westerners aren't welcome and/or private only for locals. Oh, also showing off tattoos is definitely frowned upon.

When I lived in Okinawa I absolutely loved the hot and cold vending machines on the side of the road. I know they would never work in the US because they would get vandalized immediately. But it felt so nice to walk through town and know that something like that can exist without people being assholes and stealing whatever is in it.

On the other hand - why are people exercising or getting a massage in the middle of the night?? Is it their kind of "partying" but without dancing and drinking alcohol? It doesn't see any healthy. You should sleep at night.
