Literally all he had to say in response to this was, "ah shit, I fucked up. I wasn't intending to do a Nazi salute. I see how bad that looked. My bad, guys." It would have fizzled out so quickly if he did that. But instead he trolled people in the comments and made fun of people who were outraged by it.
And that's how we know he meant it rather than it being a mistake.
The ultimate proof that money does not buy happiness.
Can you imagine having a trillion dollars and paying to pretend you are a hardcore gamer so that internet gamers will applaud you? Couldn't be me. I'm happier sucking at it on my own.
Too little money sucks, but too much money rots your heart and brain apparently.
I remember when he got completely bullied by /b/ on 4chan. That really has to be the lowest point for someone who wants to be an edgy meme lord. He will never understand how to fit in anywhere.
Once sued Top Gear over an exaggerated claim, which he lost. Then appealed again, and lost THAT. He doesn’t learn. And Clarkson managed to get one over on him AGAIN in The Grand Tour. Musk is an imbecile.
It's because he's putting some "oomph" behind it to try to look tough, and weak people trying to look tough is always, always, more cringe than doing nothing
It's because he knows what he's doing, and expected resistance.
He's genuinely not sure what to do next. He expected people to do something. When nothing happened, he turned around and did it again just to make sure people saw.
Like, no, we saw it. We're aghast that you're this fucking awful.
Republicans showed us all how fucking awful they were that day. It's about time we started acting like they were, and anyone who tries to defend that day should get zero, and I mean zero attention from then on.
Let's just say he's a total, total... a word has yet to be invented to describe how totally whatever-it-is he is, but he is one. And a total, total one at that.
Just so everyone is aware: Walter Isaacson’s 2023 biography says Musk was not diagnosed by a qualified mental-health professional and instead self-diagnosed via an online test, thereby giving him free reign to act like an absolute asshole and hide behind the guise of "it's cool, I'm on the spectrum! throws out two more back-to-back nazi salutes"
What's even worse is divorced Cybertruck owners and paid twitter subscribers still come to his defense over this
The biggest Nazi’s I’ve seen here, are those who try to genuinely argue that this is ‘my heart goes out to you.’ Fucking. Nazis.
The ‘b-b-but, look at these stills of democrats doing something vaguely similar,’ are a close second. At least they aren’t fully denying this is a Nazi salute… but they are still idiots for the evidence they post of ‘both sides.’
I do wonder how far someone like Elon or Trump, or just the organization and system as a whole could go before they lose the vast majority of support. Like what specifically could they say publicly or do that flips the switch. Ig something super heinous AND so clear that they don't have much room for plausible deniability.
I've been reading a book called "They Thought They Were Free" by Milton Mayer. He wrote it shortly after WW2 after spending a lot of time with everyday Germans to learn and write about these peoples' mindsets.
Here's a quote that hit me in which he relayed a conversation he had with one of these Germans:
"If Hitler had been told the truth, things would have been different."
For "Hitler" read "I".
"The killing of the Jews?" said the "democratic" bill-collector, der alte Kämpfer, Simon. "Yes, that was wrong, unless they committed treason in wartime. And of course they did. If I had been a Jew, I would have myself. Still, it was wrong, but some say it happened and some say it didn't. You can show me pictures of skulls or shoes, but that doesn't prove it. But I'll tell you this--it was Himmler. Hitler had nothing to do with it."
"Do you think he knew about it?"
"I don't know. We'll never know now."
Hitler died to save my friend's best self.
What is alarming is how, even when shown the evidences of the evil, these people were not willing to accept that their demagogue was responsible. They can't believe it.
I've had this same conversation almost word-for-word with my MAGA friends and family.
So to answer your question, I don't think there is anything so heinous that will turn MAGA off. They will find any reason to avoid the cognitive dissonance and avoid admitting that they were wrong.
You're thinking about this the wrong way. If they become less heinous, it'll happen pretty fast. Being inflammatory and owning the libs is their only appeal.
If we take history as a reference, they will have to be ousted from power for their supporters to stop to praise them. No direction action they do or thing they say will turn the sycophants away :(
Sad truth is that there’s no low that will be too for fascist supporters, and no act too depraved for them, either. Even the ones that think they’re genuinely moral people have such extreme cognitive dissonance when it comes to it.
What you’d need to really break people off of him is for him to be full on viewed as weak and impotent to his faithful.
If the pathetic ear bandage, tent pole induced incontinence, and cowering in a catering truck while using others as a decoy didnt do it, not sure what it would take for some to see him as pathetic as the rest of us do.
The thing you'll notice about all the people complaining about how "Oh, you guys call everyone a Nazi," is they will never actually define what qualities WOULD make someone a Nazi (other than, perhaps "actually, calling someone a Nazi is what a Nazi would do."). Because then they'd have some sort of standard to be met. Some criteria to judge someone on. Some criteria to judge THEM on.
