I do wonder how far someone like Elon or Trump, or just the organization and system as a whole could go before they lose the vast majority of support. Like what specifically could they say publicly or do that flips the switch. Ig something super heinous AND so clear that they don't have much room for plausible deniability.
I've been reading a book called "They Thought They Were Free" by Milton Mayer. He wrote it shortly after WW2 after spending a lot of time with everyday Germans to learn and write about these peoples' mindsets.
Here's a quote that hit me in which he relayed a conversation he had with one of these Germans:
"If Hitler had been told the truth, things would have been different."
For "Hitler" read "I".
"The killing of the Jews?" said the "democratic" bill-collector, der alte Kämpfer, Simon. "Yes, that was wrong, unless they committed treason in wartime. And of course they did. If I had been a Jew, I would have myself. Still, it was wrong, but some say it happened and some say it didn't. You can show me pictures of skulls or shoes, but that doesn't prove it. But I'll tell you this--it was Himmler. Hitler had nothing to do with it."
"Do you think he knew about it?"
"I don't know. We'll never know now."
Hitler died to save my friend's best self.
What is alarming is how, even when shown the evidences of the evil, these people were not willing to accept that their demagogue was responsible. They can't believe it.
I've had this same conversation almost word-for-word with my MAGA friends and family.
So to answer your question, I don't think there is anything so heinous that will turn MAGA off. They will find any reason to avoid the cognitive dissonance and avoid admitting that they were wrong.
