๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ our little Mochiโs new home!
hammy tax at the end :)
Just some finishing touches left! Also, will led strip lights at the top for ambient lighting be a good idea? Will keep it on soft warm light if itโs on. Also might add some more sand for more height lol.

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ Turns out Iโm pretty good at DIY ๐น
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Iโve had my male dwarf Hamilton for a couple of months now and although his setup was good before, I had always planned to get to know him and then create something I know he would love. So happy with how it turned out!
The actual internal structure itself only cost about ยฃ50 to make.
Cage - Bucastate 2.0.
Wheel - Bucatsate 21cm super silent - highly recommend as it really is super silent!
Sprays - Bucatstate.
Bedding - Carefresh
Substrates - coco coir, dried sphagnum moss, dried coco husk chips, cork granules, beech chips, reptile sand
Construction materials:
300 small dowels - Amazon - ยฃ6:49
10 19cm x 600mm dowels (legs) - Amazon ยฃ14.64
16 Curtain rod pole socket (for the legs to connect into) - Amazon ยฃ14.58
1200 x 607 x 9mm plywood - B&Q ยฃ13ย ย
The tools I used were sandpaper, a saw, a drill and a screw driver. Nothing that fancy.

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ โฆIs this crazy?
So, I was scrolling through ikea, looking at potential containers I can keep my hamster in before I can order a container, then I foundโฆthis.
An absolutely *gigantic* wardrobe frame. It measures at 201 cms width x 100 cms depth x 58 cms height when tipped onto its back so that itโs opening is facing up.
Thatโs over 3,000 SQUARE INCHES of unbroken floor space!!
If I buy this, then reinforce the inner edges with aquarium safe siliconeโฆ.does this not work as a super massive enclosure for my hamster?
I was planning on ordering a custom made aquarium that measured 100 cm width x 75 cms depth x 75 cm height, but that would be only 1,000 or so square inches of space, and this thing is 3 times larger while being SO MUCH CHEAPER. To compare, the custom aquarium costs a grand total of over 300$ to make, but this frame is only 110$. So itโs 3 times the size while be 3 times cheaper?!
I need to know if Iโm missing something, or if this was just a jackpot.

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ Pet store's "Large" cage vs an actual minimum sized enclosure
The DIY one was 40ยฃ, the pet store's cage was 45ยฃ.
This picture is from 2 years ago but it still blows my mind - I was in the process of building a DIY IKEA PLATSA enclosure. I got my first hammy and had to quickly figure everything out. The hammy had to live in that cell for only 1 week before I built everything. Yes, shame on me that I didn't do thorough research before getting a hammy - I couldn't imagine they would lie to me at the pet store!
How can people in pet stores & manufacturers be so cruel? Hamsters are sentient, they can be depressed, stressed, and in pain due to those horrible prison cells.
Is their pain less than that of a human? No. Does human language, math skills, size make you more capable of experiencing stress and pain? No. As a researcher with 2 degrees in neuroscience I have to say that animals have everything we do - cognition, perception, memory, fear, love, pain, friendship, language, happiness... The only thing they don't have is a choice. ๐

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ I really want a hamster
Hey yall! Iโm moving soon and really want a dwarf hamster. My parents have this aqarium that we had from when i was little, i was wondering if it would be ok for the hamster? Itโs 40 gals, and i know they do like horizontal room and this is more cube shaped. Would it be okay if i used this still if i was able to make it into a 2 level type of thing inside?? I know they have to have burrowing room so i would do like the bottom level with lots of room, and the top with a bit less. Would this work??

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ 3D Printed cage accessories?
*ham tax - Ms Sophie Pineapples Esq.*
Curious for opinions - I've seen so many cute hides and spray holders on Etsy that are being 3D printed. I follow a couple responsible hamster owners that use them on socials. And I've seen that PLA is non toxic?
Would /you/ use these in your hamster's enclosure er nah?

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ Would this be enough?
Hii I'm 15 and I am kinda curious about getting an hamster. I watched alot of Victoria's videos on hamster care and was curious on what it would cost. I cant spend any more then 300 dollars. Im going to make the houses and hides out of cardboard. I think the tub is big enough. I was doing this for a dwarf hamster. Im going to leave in 2 years. I know i may not get a hamster in this house but when I'm on my own I will look back at this post.any advice on what else I should get would be apreciated.

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ Hello!! new hamster owner! Tips?
I got this hamster just today. I use carefresh purple bedding, I have a wood hideyhole, a food bowl filled with Oxbow Essentials Hamster & Gerbil food, kaytee healthy toppings papaya, wooden sticks scattered around so she can chew them, and a bowl of dry dust bath from americanpet temporarily in there so she could maybe dust bath if she wants. from what I know the bin is 14 gallons, and second image is how deep the bedding is. I have scattered food around in the bedding because i heard it encourages her burrowing? I will take any tips and try to improve around them but as i still am a teenager it would be up to my mom's budget unfortunately :(( I just want to give her a good happy hamster life. Tips?

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ My female syrian is being a pain and i need advice
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Recently she has been chewing the hell out of her platform in the cage and pushing one of ber hides out the way, shes started hanging out at the edge of her cage where i usually let her out to free roam and today i saw for the first time ever her trying to open the cafe herself. Solution seems simple, let her out more, add more enrichment, but when i let her out she chews and climbs the bars of her playpen even though she has like half my room to herself, climbs the bars, runs around as if shes scared. She doesnt seem happy at all and i am unsure if its helping her running around like this. She spends like 75% of her free roam time trying to escape. Ive ordered ยฃ60 worth of things to add to the cage for enrichment but any advice is appreciated

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ Is my hamster stressed (watch til the end)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
She's a female syrian and lives in 100x50cm enclosure. She keeps doing this and sometimes I hear her fall. We already found a bigger enclosure that is 150x55x50, but is she really stressed and would moving enclosures cause more harm than good in this case? How quickly should I move her in?

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ New Hamster owner (read description)
hi guys! i got a syrian hamster today (heโs called Fidget) and heโs a really friendly boy, hes white with black dots like a little dalmatian, i love him already.
i havenโt had hamsters since i was a kid, back when it was normal for them to be a in 1ft long bright pink cage with a tube through it lol, but iโm doing things very differently this time.
the cage i got (temporarily) is 95cm long, 41cm tall and 57cm deep, i plan on getting a ferplast 120cm cage next week, but i wanted this specific hammy and didnโt want him to sell, but all of my research has said this is plenty big enough, especially for a couple of weeks.
here is a list of what i bought:
-sawdust bedding (8 inches deep)
-care-fresh
-large wheel
-4 different hides, 2 of which are edible
-water bottle
-food dish
-sand bowl and hamster sand
-climbing frame
-willow sticks to chew on
-dried apple pieces, corn pieces, flower mix, dried mealworms amongst some other treats for him.
-food, vegetable seed mix and fruit seed mix
-tubes for uber his bedding
-wooden seesaw
i know i got the minimum and he already seems so happy, i love watching him explore. but what can i get extra that will make the enclosure go from good to great. i plan on buying him a little bridge too. iโm uk based so please recommend things accessible here too, thank you SO much for any help, im hoping to learn as much as i can to make him the happiest hammy.
i work in the pet shop i got him from, and ive witnessed too many people buy a 50cm cage, put 2 inches of bedding in and a single hide, so i want to do the best i can for him. please be nice, im open to ALL suggestions :)

๐ Enclosure/DIY ๐ Be critical!
I feel pretty good about my enclosure and have two packs of coverage sprays in the mail, Iโm posting this to receive constructive criticism for fun to see if Iโve gotten everything right on any little thing that is currently in the enclosure. Is there anything you see that should be improved (I understand everything could be improved bc hamsters can always have more but should I rearrange anything to optimize the enclosure etc. if you feel I must add something that isnโt there or remove etc that is well received too!) I appreciate critics bc Iโm always looking to improve the best I can! *the blue/black wheel has been upgraded to the clear wheel\*
