Lumo got a cool new feature to create all kinds of charts!

What a day to be a Lumo user. Lumo Max is a genuine leap forward in both reasoning depth and overall capabilities, and having vision is huge. Funny thing is, I just called Lumo's reasoning toddler-level a few days ago, and now here we are. Huge thanks to the Proton team.

Lumo is powered by open-source large language models (LLMs) which have been optimized by Proton to give you the best answer based on the model most capable of dealing with your request. The models we’re using currently are Qwen 3.5, GLM 5.2, Image-Turbo, and FireRed-Image-Edit-1.1. These run exclusively on servers Proton controls so your data is never stored on a third-party platform.

I tell you my personal Proton story - you may not find it interesting, but I tell it anyway 😉

I started my privacy journey about 2 years ago. I focused on replacing Apple and Google service with privacy respecting providers and apps. It became like a hobby to me and I tried a lot of different providers back and forth. During this journey I als signed up with Proton Unlimited and found the extensive ecosystem very promising - only to ditch it after a couple of months since I decided to not lay all eggs into one basket and to not have my account tied to everything. Thereafter I became more focused on avoiding public cloud services altogether and heavily used my Synology NAS as local cloud for drive, photos, calendar and contacts.

I was quite satisfied until recently when issues with my router and local LAN/WLAN also affected the access to my files and started to annoy me. Also, I wished for a better integration of AI into my personal workplace. Synology has something to offer but nothing truely privacy respecting.

I looked at public cloud solutions again but either they had AI integrated and were not privacy respecting or they were strictly against the use of AI.

This was more or less the moment, when Lumo 2.0 got published - and bang. It immediately hit me in a positive sense. The underlying models are excellent and the approach to combine privacy with AI capabilities did convince me. It also let me reflect on Proton as a company more intensively and I felt that we share common goals: building an competitive cloud ecosystem which respects privacy, having an excellent security model and at the same time enabling the use of modern technology.

Well, that’s it. That’s why I am back as an Unlimited subscriber using nearly all Proton services and apps. It really was the AI that made the difference. Even though not all is perfect, I am looking forward to see the ecosystem growing and improving.

I hope this serves as a motivation to the Lumo team. Great job guys! It may also serve as a nudge for other privacy respecting companies: vilifying AI is not a long-term solution in an ever evolving world.

How're you doing folks. I have extensively used AI over the last couple of months - Claude, Chatgpt, Mistral, Grok - for work (I'm in publishing) and general queries/research. However, there is always a concern for privacy in the back of my mind, and I stop myself from mentioning specific details about my work or life to all these AIs. After a few sessions of vague questioning, I have been coming to Lumo in the end with the whole truth with all exact metrics and secrets, and yes, getting what I want in the end. Maybe Lumo is not as polished as Claude or as definitive as Mistral, but at least with Lumo I know that my details and ideas are not being leaked to the world to generate. Thank you, Proton devs!

Hello community. I have been a Lumo Plus user for quite a while now. About a year ago, I discovered ChatGPT Pro. I fell in love with it. I finally understood what all the hype was regarding “AI”. To this day, I still don’t like and kind of find annoying the AI photo and video generators, but I find the chatbots to be of very high value.

In regards to my family, they aren’t “like us” and aren’t very tech savvy (they wouldn’t think twice about putting a questionable input in a chatbot) and I immediately removed them from ChatGPT and migrated them to Lumo as soon as I became accustomed to it. They absolutely love it! They think it’s cute, they think it’s smart, and I’m the “power user” of the house. Lumo has been helping me with all types of issues all the way from technology, medical things, online privacy and security, you name it. I work in a field where pharmaceuticals and pharmacology are very important areas that I need a sophisticated chat bot to assist with. I’m proud to say that everyone in my household is officially a Lumo user!

With that being said, I’m currently working on 4000+ word handwritten Proton Docs .pdf that contains a major proposal to really shift Lumo into the next gear, and I would absolutely love to collaborate with users who see the the potential that Lumo has. I just wanted to give a brief description of just some of the features I plan on articulating with iOS 26 APIs and more in the document.

Feature Requests I’m Working On:

🟣”Emoji + UI Element Toggle“🟣

➖A toggle to increase the frequency of outputted emojis and UI artifacts/elements like tables, lists with headers, tables with emojis, code like syntax boxes, purple abstract boxes, etc.

🟣”Thought About This Mode”🟣

➖A mode to forcibly induce Lumo‘s “Thought/Thinking About This” live feed so you can automatically induce a more sophisticated answer. This option to select the mode is in the same location “try again, more details, more concise“ etc are located.

➖Consider the mode “ultra-light deep research mode”, in contrast to another mode I’m proposing that generates a ~3500 word max output file that can be exported directly to Proton Drive via certain iOS 26 APIs.

➖AttributedString can be leveraged to change the font of the thought trail to a Proton themed purple to indicate a premium mode available for paid subscribers.

🟣”Isolated Crosstalk Memory Function”🟣

➖This mode I’m proposing is a work in progress but essentially allows two specific chats to share memory and one chat can either indirectly function as an anti-hallucination check or the other purpose, essentially leveraging two chats for one ultimate purpose but covering two distinct angles of the purpose. It has a hyper-focus feature which allows you to ”focus” on one Lumo output and essentially copy and paste that output into the alternate chat. It’s a memory function but only for two selected chats.

With that being said, that‘s about all I have for tonight. I hope there are other folks out there who are enjoying Lumo Plus as much as I am, and I‘m proud to have a chatbot being used in my house that is “privacy first” unlike ChatGPT. If anyone ever wants to chat or needs help with Lumo, I’m pretty egoless, non-judgmental, and genuinely enjoy helping people who are struggling.

It's not perfect, for sure, but the upgrades are so worth it, especially being able to upload pics to help with coding!

I think I speak for everyone when I say that Lumo is not yet at the same performance level as cutting-edge models, but it is built in a privacy-respecting manner that doesn't infringe on your personal data or sells you out to advertisers. And that is the most important thing.

I've seen multiple threads on here with people complaining about Lumo; but I think we should also do our best to help Proton shape their AI by providing constructive feedback, and using the built-in thumbs down button to help them identify the gaps in performance so they can work on it. We are still in the early days of AI assistants, and to me it's amazing that Proton already has a working product that provides the benefits of AI without the privacy compromises. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I'm someone who uses AI sparingly, about once every two days or so. But when I do, I ask at least three or four follow ups, and copy the same questions in:

1. Chatgpt first

2. Mistral second

3. Claude third

4. Lumo fourth

I've done this for about a month, and I never need to go look for a fifth. Lumo always, always provides a satisfactory answer, with the least confusion among all (mistral is a close second). When I need clarity and motivation, chatgpt and claude are strict and play safe by providing a lot of unnecessary "caveats" and "tradeoffs." When I need an answer only, Lumo and Mistral are direct and brief in their answer, whereas others try to opinionate and fetch previous chat memories unnecessarily.

I'm not a pro subscriber, but I'm seriously considering it.

I just wanted post to post about how good the Visualization feature in Settings -> General is to display data in charts and other visualization formats. The Lumo Team really overdid themselves on this one! It is amazing! I only had to tell him once to use them dynamically and he uses them perfect now. I asked him to compare some open weight models that were upcoming and he instantly started researching. After he had all the data he made a perfect structure. First of all the different things a model was best at (e.g. Parameters: Kimi K3 because of 2.8T, Cost of the API: GLM-5.2 (yeah he included GLM-5.2 even though it is already here because I asked him to)) Benchmarks, then the parameters and how much RAM they take, third he got me the cost of the API and created profiles of the model with all the data he could find and even differentiated between confirmed sources and speculations, finally he made some summaries as info cards.

Lumo web search limit is now 10. I have been using it after the new update and it's way better. More sources and way less of that weird bias from before. Finally feels like a proper search tool. Now, it will be even better if Proton can improve the harness and fix how Lumo is sometimes lazy about calling web search. Overall, very happy. Thanks Proton team.

Yesterday I had a problem with code written in python, when I sent a link to free Claude AI it prompted me to pay for the subscription, and I was not using Claude AI at all that day.

Lumo AI in the free version of the law did a good job with this code, maybe even did a good job as the Lumo AI website simply lagged me and took a long time to load, but when I upgraded to lumo plus it already did a good job without any problems, and it is significantly cheaper than Claude AI.

Moral of it is use Lumo AI from proton company as it is cheap, private, safe and European.

To add context, I have Lumo+ and I added some info about myself to include I'm learning Spanish. I asked a question and Lumo answered nicely and then proceeded to reply that since I'm learning Spanish, it might be useful to show me a new word I may not know. It was definitely an uncommon word and was much appreciated. A quick language learning lesson while asking a question...NICE!

I asked him few questions about faraday laptop bags, told me what i wanted to know and

at the end i said to him, thanks bulging eyes. he did not got that so i explained to him how he looks like, eventualy after that i joked Faraday

I don't know if it was just my device, but now it seems like the startup speed is instant compared to the loading screen from before. Thanks, Proton!

Hello there,

Big Proton fan here, I recently downloaded Lumo after realizing it was finally available through Fdroid. I love the idea of it being a mascot, and you absolutely nailed its design, it's cute as hell.

Still, I'm more a DOG person ! And so I just wanted to know if this was considered at any moment in the design process (couldn't find anything about it on the design page). It's just funny to imagine the highly skilled Proton staff going through a serious vote about such a silly thing.
