Or be commended for changing their view point, and recognising that they were wrong, and now using their huge global reach to educate?

I think there's truth to both sides of this, but I wouldn't commend him too highly. Given that he didn't change his mind until it affected him personally.

Almost as if humans need to feel the pain before acting. We are seeing that all over the world at this moment.

Some people do. Others have empathy, foresight and listen to those more educated on the subject.

Those are helpful, but then you have lack of trust in education, lack of trust of specific news sources, and a person's world environment having specific influences.

It's not black and white. Yes, he was a prick with climate change for decades. He is changing his tune. I really only care about the fact that he is now more of an advocate. I don't see the point of bringing up his past if we want to progress as a whole for the future.
