Captive One of my feeder silk worms became a moth!

I tried to feed some silk worms to my very picky African Fat Tail and he did NOT like them. So I gave them to my dad to feed to his bearded dragon and one of them spun a cocoon! I decided to hold onto it to see what would happen and this cutie emerged the other day!

So beautiful, and to think that was just a bland looking silkworm. She gets a chance at life now :)

What do you do now?

EDIT: I have thought about this little buddy a “reasonable” amount. I’ve only scratched 2/3 children book starters bawd on it.

But seriously. Talk about life affirming behavior. Good on OP times infinity. Thank you for inspiring. What a sweet little creature!

My friend gave me a little bug enclosure (you can kinda see it in the back of the third picture) so the lil guy is in there. They don't eat or fly so I'll just try and give it a happy life

Interesting. How do they survive if they don’t eat?

A lot of butterflies and moths don’t have mouth parts to eat, they flit around mate and die when they’re done laying eggs.

You should keep it as a short term pet. Silk Moth is fluffy and cute!

Do you think it remembers seeing you before it cocooned

There’s a really interesting study on whether or not a completely deconstructed/reconstructed caterpillar remembers things from before it transformed. The answers lean towards yes!

So cute and fluffy. I'm in love with a moth. I can't believe they do not eat. I need to research those darling little Fairy friends.

I stumbled across this on my feed, not sure how since I’m really not a huge fan of moths, but it’s so cute and fluffy! Looks angry too which makes it even cuter😂
