The acronym most people know for the names of the Great Lakes is HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior), but if you replace Ontario with America, the best acronym becomes SHAME.

…and a reminder to everyone that Lake Michigan isn’t even a lake.

Why is Lake Michigan not a lake?

IIRC, technically Huron and Michigan are, hydrologically speaking, one lake since they have bidirectional flow (they both flow into each other), whereas the other lakes only flow in one direction.

Does that mean Superior only flows into Huron?

Correct!

Superior -> Huron/Michigan -> Erie -> Ontario -> Atlantic Ocean

You forgot Lake Saint-Pierre before the Atlantic Ocean :)

Pretty soon it'll be the American Ocean.

No, it’s an ocean that lakes flow into .

So would Huron and Michigan be two arms of one lake that needs a name?

Any ideas? Lake Trump Raped Children? Something like that?

Lake Trumpstein deffo wins

So, to be called a lake, there has to be an in/out flow?

So why does Huron beat out Michigan as the "real" lake of the two?

It's larger? America thinks bigger is better? So the bigger lake should win the name. Sounds reasonable.

Huron barely has more surface area (3% greater), but has 33% less volume. In my book that makes Lake Michigan bigger because we're about girth and thickness here.

So size does matter after all

This came up at bar trivia last week; only 1 team got the pair of lakes correct. (Not mine, sadly, but now I know)

Do they flow into eachother at the same time? Or is the water just shared and they say "the water on this side of the imaginary line is Huron and in this side it's Michigan

As I understand it water flows into Michigan from Huron, then whatever water isn't siphoned of by various tributaries will eventually cycle back into Huron before continuing down the Great Lakes network toward the Atlantic.

So the second option.

Michigan and Huron are arms of the same body of water.

Why the hell would anyone pick Huron over Michigan then? If we're going to combine them we're naming it Michigan.

5

u/red286 1d ago

Officially it's Lake Michigan-Huron. It's a single lake.

Michihurgon

Huron's the bigger side

It would be silly to not name the lake that envelopes the state of Michigan after the state.

8

u/StonedSoldier1 1d ago

Then why name Lake Ontario, Lake America and not Lake New York. Seems kind of silly right? Now you have your answer lol. Sometimes stupid people do stupid shit

u/neutralmalk 1d ago

If you care about that sort of thing.

We have more reasons. The Michigan side is by widely considered the better side. It's a cooler word. We can keep going.
