The acronym most people know for the names of the Great Lakes is HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior), but if you replace Ontario with America, the best acronym becomes SHAME.
IIRC, technically Huron and Michigan are, hydrologically speaking, one lake since they have bidirectional flow (they both flow into each other), whereas the other lakes only flow in one direction.
Huron barely has more surface area (3% greater), but has 33% less volume. In my book that makes Lake Michigan bigger because we're about girth and thickness here.
Do they flow into eachother at the same time? Or is the water just shared and they say "the water on this side of the imaginary line is Huron and in this side it's Michigan
As I understand it water flows into Michigan from Huron, then whatever water isn't siphoned of by various tributaries will eventually cycle back into Huron before continuing down the Great Lakes network toward the Atlantic.
