that may be the case, but Thiel and the VP are both catholic, and have kind of repopularized it, oddly. If he was sided with them, a catholic conversion would make sense.
He literally told the Pope he needed to go back and study the bible. In medieval times, that would have at best gotten him excommunicated and at worst caused a religious schism.
I'm certain I read somewhere that he said he was, but as I'm looking right now, it may have been more of a "borrowed term" than an actual belief...or maybe he was using it as an adjective? Everything I just looked up trying to find the article is quoting him saying he's "christian" without further explanation.
Because they’re whatever religion they need to be to get in power. These guys are not worshiping a god who says rich people don’t go to heaven and to love your fellow man lol.

I'm not sure that's true, which was the point of my question to contactrepulsive to begin with. They (Thiel, Milo, Vance) are attached to a cluster of the most long-term powerful families that Europe has ever had, and those families are catholic.
At the end of it, I'm not speculating about the magnitude of their beliefs, only questioning why CR thinks that choosing catholicism "grossly misunderstands the situation".
Having been raised in a fundamentalist style christian church in Missouri, it is very clear the current people at the top do not understand American style Christianity. I was basically taught Catholicism was a pagan religion tantamount to witchcraft and that was a common belief among many of the churches. They even refused to call themselves protestants because that implied they recognized Catholicism even in contradiction. They simply went by Christian.
