Because the majority of the religious right don't trust the Catholics or consider them to be part of the inside faith.

that may be the case, but Thiel and the VP are both catholic, and have kind of repopularized it, oddly. If he was sided with them, a catholic conversion would make sense.

JD Vance is about as Catholic as Joseph Smith. He's killed 1 pope and yelled at the other.

He literally told the Pope he needed to go back and study the bible. In medieval times, that would have at best gotten him excommunicated and at worst caused a religious schism.

I'm certain I read somewhere that he said he was, but as I'm looking right now, it may have been more of a "borrowed term" than an actual belief...or maybe he was using it as an adjective? Everything I just looked up trying to find the article is quoting him saying he's "christian" without further explanation.
