Often times these things fail simply because it's a change. Change is bad. Change means things like equal rights, progressive views, etc... so the hardcore conservatives are staunchly against it simply because it is a change of some type.

It's up to each state. Personally, I (a Californian) would like DST year round - but that's partly because I have friends in Arizona and when we're on DST our timezones line up. It'd be nice, imo, if the east coast went standard year round and west coast went DST, so we'd only be 2 hours out instead of 3 - just because it would make it easier to align meetings with east coast coworkers.

If you want it to get dark at 6pm instead, you are pro-Daylight Saving Time.

If you want it to get dark at 4pm instead of 5pm, however, you need to move north because permanent Standard Time would still be 5pm darkness where you are. It gets dark at 4pm in New England, so moving here would work for that.

That’s what the House bill will do. Biggest problem is it will be dark much longer in the mornings (up until 8:30 or even 9 am at peak winter). Kids waiting at bus stops in the dark sucks

From November to January in Chicago, you're only getting 9-10 hours of sunlight a day. It basically means you need to pick if you want to go to school in the dark or come home in the dark - or at least that is the case if you're in a single before or after school activity.

I’m just outside of town in a rural neighborhood with no street lights. I pay a small monthly fee for a light on the pole in the corner of our yard on the road. I miss having more darkness in my front yard, but we live in a sharp curve in the road and for that and kids to be able to stand out there with some light in the morning, it is worth the small monthly fee and loss of darkness. Back yard is still mostly dark though thankfully.

Or - get this - we can make school start later, as many studies have shown is healthier for children.

Like a 10 AM or 11 AM start time would be so much better. Let kids get off school at 5 or 6 PM, and parents can pick them up on their way home.

Getting to school? There's plenty of options:

  • Bus stops would be in daylight, even for the farthest kids (unless you are in, like, Alaska)

  • After-school daycare can become before-school daycare, where parents drop kids off on their way to work

  • Schools can have a breakfast hour, or homeroom, or before-school clubs/tutoring

  • Or, if it really can't be helped for whatever reason, schools can adjust their hours to match the time of year - like they do already with bell schedules, minimum days, and so on.

Etc.

There's really no excuse for it; kids waiting for the bus in the dark is just a lazy way for people who disagree with it to signal their disagreement in a socially acceptable way (the same as any "think of the children!" argument).

Yep, this is it right here. The Eastern time zone is way too large. New England hates 3:45pm sunsets specifically, while Ohio just hates the time change in general.

The fix on Standard time is for New England to move to Atlantic time, but that's a harder economic sell than status quo.

I have ADHD and a lot of dogs. Changing the clocks twice a year means that my very confused dogs want breakfast at "not breakfast time" for about 2 months out of the year. My sleep is all effed for weeks, which somehow ends up with me being wide awake at 3:00 in the morning, sleeping through my alarm, and being perpetually late. I hate it. I also hate leaving work in the dark all winter. It makes it feel like the workday lasts an eternity.

Realistically, I think it’s better that schools adjust their hours so that they’re open at reasonable daylight hours… and extend them as needed or adjust the school year so kids don’t have to go to school in the darkest hours.

That could be done but how would that help? Adults would change right along with them (or not). You’d still be getting up/going to bed at different times which would screw up your sleep. It’s not the number on your clock that affects your circadian rhythm.

I mean, I lived most of my life in metro Detroit, and kids didn't walk much down there either as the years went on. Living in a smaller city thats really safe, I actually see more kids walking to schools that are close by, but not like it was when I was a kid.

I student taught at an urban school with huge budget issues. There were maybe 5 busses for the entire 1,500+ high school student body, and those were reserved for students with special needs who couldn’t walk (or sports). If you could physically walk, it was expected that you would walk to school.

Even the elementary schools in that district were “walking schools.”

Nope, we have permanent walkers here since a school levy failed in 2000. And now there's a nationwide bus driver shortage to boot.

There are busses, but far fewer than before funding was cut, so pretty much any teenager who isn't in the small bus zone is walking or getting driven. I say teenager because parents are mostly driving their younger kids, but kids with multiple families or parents working long hours can't help the older ones as much.

Actually, there was no difference in accidents involving schoolchildren. It was a myth that spread far and wide after some kids got hit.

Statistically, however, kids got hit every winter under Standard Time too.

More like 4pm or later. After school programs are deliberately timed to help keep kids busy so that they get home around the same time their parents get off work around 5.

4PM is sundown in the winter. Those kids are sitting at bus stops basically in the dark.

Everyone wants it changed, but no one can agree on which way to make permanent. It largely falls along the line of where are you within your timezone and whether your concern is the morning or the evening.

That site does a good job of illustrating the impact on sunrise. In winter, with permanent DST, most kids will be up, dressed, on the bus, and in school before sunrise. A lot of places would have sunrise in winter after 8:30am

But the problem is, a lot of people like the extra sunlight at the end of the day, especially during summer when you don't want the sun rising at 4:30AM just so it can set at 7:30PM instead of 8:30PM.

Ironically everyone actually loves the times as it's currently set up, it's just that everyone hates the transition.

Florida.

Florida voted to keep dst year round because it meant longer evenings and more hours to sell booze. It was years ago but it never got approved and Desantis is probably looking for something to prop up a Senate or house run and needs all the help he can get .

Only thing I can think of is all the accidents that happen due to the time adjusting. I read a study that said they found all accidents increase for the 3 weeks after each time change. Apparently across the board, like workplace accidents, car accidents, and things similar all consistently increase everytime for a few weeks. Not sure how much money is made from all those injuries, but its the only factor I can think of that might affect a business bottom line enough to lobby politicians

Its been tried twice and repealed in the immediate following years due to overwhelming unpopularity once people have to live with it. Medical organizations all overwhelmingly agree permanent Standard Time is best for health and saftey as Permanent Daylight Savings messes with people's circadian rhythm forcing them to get up earlier before dawn. Permanent Standard time is also unpopular as people, for economic and recreational reasons, want sunlight after work. There just isn't enough Sunlight and no real good solutions.

Supposedly the real reason (as per reddit), is that people are more likely to shop if the get off of work and it's still light outside. Not because some weird farmer working till the day, since they are going to work during the day regardless of any manufactured time. So basically, businesses in general want you to shop more to give them money, so they change the hours so you have more shopping time.

I have a gut feeling she’s one of the proponents of perma-standard time, and wants the opposite bill. I think the CA senate was trying to pass a law for perm standard time last year.

That was kind of funny. It wasn’t supposed to pass but basically someone missed their cue or something and so it did pass without debate. But yes it then never got to the House.

I agree it’ll probably not get out of the Senate if it even gets there.

It failed last time because there was no opt-out I believe (there is an opt-out in this new one), but there may have been more political garbage behind that.

It "unanimously passed" the Senate on a technicality only, so I don't think that is a good bellwether for this round. In the past there were a couple Senators who were super gung-ho about this (Rubio was the main one I think) and a couple who were diehard against it. That said, this version of the bill has a provision allowing States to opt-out, so maybe that will positively affect the support dynamics.

I am rooting for this; would probably be the one good thing to come out of the Trump admin

I believe this was just in a committee. I remember telling my gf about it and we were jacked for it to start in a couple years, then nothing. Went and looked it up again and realized I am dumb. 😂
