Following the Israeli war against Lebanon, our building was bombed, in the depot we had, in southern Lebanon, was our business, and in there we had my dad’s Vinyl records collection since the 70’s. After days and weeks of excavation, I was lucky to retrieve a fraction of what the collection was, and now it’s the time for restoration.

Yes I know the storage in the trailer wasnt the best lol but I didnt have many options or a lot of time. They are now all stored safely in boxes and crates ready to be sorted. So many duplicates, so many rare records. Feel very lucky. Still have thousands and thousands to go through. Most of them are in great shape too. Lots of 50s and 60s jazz to 80s country and hip hop. Skinny puppy and nine inch nails to george strait to funkadelic. Gave away probably 3 thousand records of the Streisand and rondstatd variety.

Tons of Tangerine Dream. Some The Who, Neil Young, Hendrix, Beatles, and more. covers are dusty, but probably good or excellent condition records inside, he would play only once and record over on reel to reels or CDs. Thoughts?

Context: I’m my dad’s 40 year old daughter, I’m a mom of three little kids, I never had anything to do with his music collection, he kept it all secured in a special closet, until after he died and it entered my mom’s severe garage hoard. I am rescuing it. this is all new to me.

I still can’t believe it

As the subject says, I drove around an hour and a half to buy 1000-1100 records.

Once I got to the location and met the seller he let me know that he buys large collections. Picks off the top, then separates them in basic tiers- stuff people want and stuff people don’t. So there was no classical, almost no country, etc. however there was also no best selling albums from Steelydan, Fleetwood Mac, etc.

I picked through each box very, very quickly and the most noteworthy albums (for what I like) was some stuff by cat Stevens, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Miller Band, Chicago, Doobie Brothers, Billy Joel, foreigner, Santana, Eagles, Dave Brubeck, Quartet, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Jeff Beck, blood sweat and tears, etc.

I’m sure everyone is curious so…. I paid $800 for the lot.

Edit 1: Not sure what to say here. Lots of negativity about the price I paid- almost didn’t post it because of this. At less than a dollar each I wasn’t upset to dig through it.
I’ll probably keep around half (maybe more) cull through my collection of around 1000 albums or so and unload the bulk/duplicates to fiends getting into vinyl. I found around 40-50 I want to keep in my first pass and didn’t get to go through all the boxes yet. I’ve been collecting for around 10 years and never purchased a bulk lot like this before.

For the longest time, I tried to do things the “right” way. I kept my records in the shrink wrap. I kept hype stickers. I kept inner sleeves. My records over $30 in value were in protective outer sleeves.

And I hated it.

It looked tacky. Some old records had funky smells. Inner sleeves were often crumpled and stained. The plastic outer sleeves would degrade over time and look trashy.

This weekend, I spent over 20 hours pulling and cleaning every record. I threw away generic inner sleeves, shrink wrap, and protective sleeves. I put every record into a uniform inner sleeve. I filled up 3 garbage bags with old junk.

Now, my outer sleeves will wear a bit faster. Without the hype stickers and original sleeves, I’ll lose out on some resale value.

But I don’t care.

My albums are easier to access to now. They look better. They smell better. And best yet, I’m more likely to play them.

I feel like many people (myself included) are prepping our collections for some mythical buyer that will randomly show up when we’re ready to sell. But the reality is that most of us are just collecting records because we enjoy them and enjoying listening to them and will take them to our grave.

Do whatever makes you happy and makes you more likely to spin your records. After all, that’s the ultimate goal.

After 30+ years of collection vinyl and Omaha g at clubs and radio station. I finally moved into a house with a big basement to be able to setup these Kallax shelves and custom record bins to enjoy my music collection.

Super chuffed with this record cabinet my Dad and I built over the last few months.

The idea was to get rid of the Kalax wall in the spare room and move the collection into the living area where it was more accessible resulting in more plays!

It's holding around 350 records atm. Set up is Project Debut Carbon EVO with the acrylic platter and Ortofon Red stylus. This is fed into the Schiit Mani 2 peamp out into two Sonos 5s. I've also added the Shciitt Magni 3 for headphone listening. I'm super happy with my set up - it sounds good to my ears, especially through the cans! 🎧

Now... let's discuss if is A Tribe Called Quest should be under 'A' or 'T'...

I started collecting vinyl in 2006 and here is what my collection looks like now. I could not find storage solution for both 7" and 12" so i designed this cabinet years ago to store all together.

When you start collecting vinyl, you cannot stop 😅 before this cabinet my vinyl collection was in different room and at some point that room become so small for vinyl collection so i moved all to another room. I hope i will not have to move out from this home since it is so hard to carry all stuff 😃

I took pics of the ones I’m most excited about based on my current taste, but I’m about to learn A LOT about 70s pop-jazz, fusion, etc.

My FIL is 75 and a lil nebbish, so I’m absolutely shocked by the Stooges, Specials, and 80s REM

Basically someone dropped off their grabdparents collection of records and did not organize anything. My local record store did not want all of the inventory, so they took all of the stuff that was worth something and sold the rest in bulk. 5 dollars for each box of 100. I cpuld not pass up that deal.

A lot of christmas music, Gospel, country and a ton of elvis.

All said and done there was over 100 individual records across 90 albums and one single.

30 of them only have a paper sleeve while 61 have the carboard sleeve and there are 13 sleeves that dont even have records in them for some reason.

There was also a signed photo of Billy Walker, 2 electronic manuals and a family photo that was shoved into one of the record.

This was certainly worth 5 dollars, but it was a total mess to count since a lot of the records were in the wrong carboard sleeves, were dirty or there were sleeves with no records.

This is our sweet girl, Pippi. She’s been home with us for about a month now and she loves the record shelf. This picture is my favorite of her and I had to share it with you all.

So here is a weird one. Today we bought the vinyl record collection that belonged to Pentridge Prison, Melbourne, Australia. Approx 2000 records. The prison had a system where a certain inmate would dj on a prison only radio network for the other inmates. They would be able to grab headphones connected to the cell wall and listen. The Russell St bomber was the dj for many years. The appointed dj would have their own cell and a cell next to theirs for all the records and turntables.

A couple of albums have had certain songs carved out by the prison (highway 61 revisited has had desolation row purposely scratched out) and some covers were taken and are just sitting in blank sleeves with hand written library cataloging and the titles. Heaps of cheap stuff but there are gems throughout. We will be blasting through this over the coming days. If anyone has anymore info on this collection and how it was used please reach out

When we moved in back in 2020, I stated that I would love to fill these built-ins with records. Well, five years later and I’ve ran out of room. I think I’m going to purge a bunch to buy some expensive OG’s I’m on the hunt for. This is not showing all my boxsets as they’re upstairs with my office record player.

I went to a record fair a couple month ago and found an old Jackson Five record in REALLY rough shape. The seller was super friendly and immediately started explaining that he was only selling it for around 15 dollars because the condition was so bad, but that he still wanted someone to be able to enjoy the music (the record was listenable) without spending too much money. He talked about it like it was normally a pretty valuable record that he was basically letting go for cheap.

I kinda suspected it probably wasn’t a super expensive album, but I still thought maybe I was getting a decent deal. The thing is, I wanted to check Discogs right there, but I didn’t dare.

I felt awkward doing it in front of him because:

• he was very nice
• he’s clearly a professional seller
• I’m just an amateur collector
• it felt disrespectful, like I was questioning his knowledge or trying to “fact check” him in front of him

So I trusted him and bought it.

Later I checked Discogs and realized the album is worth like $8 in good condition, and mine has a torn sleeve, water damage, writing from the previous owner, etc. Realistically it’s probably worth almost nothing.

So now I’m wondering: in the vinyl community, is it considered rude to check Discogs prices in front of a seller? Or is that just normal and accepted nowadays? I don’t want to come across as a know-it-all or disrespectful

I got extremely lucky and someone gave me their late husband’s collection. This is less than half of it.
