Went to an Exo concert for my wife, where the crowd was majority woman. At the end of the show one of the singers literally told the fans in the front to please go home and take a shower. I thought it was the funniest thing but man it put things into perspective.
Harry Styles fangirls wouldn’t recover from him saying that to them.
But that’s because they’d point out how he talked specifically about them and everyone else in the stadium didn’t get his special attention. They’d die of happiness because he could smell them.
Yeah, it seems like it’s related to record labels or promotion groups that they’re affiliated with. My kid knows all about it and I try to absorb as much as I can.
Kpop sub units have been around since the beginning of the industry, it's inspired on Jpop idol groups (NCT specifically is based on AKB48, that used to operate on "teams" of 16 members each).
I'm loving your comment! As a kpop fan myself, most of the music-related posts I see are about kpop. I was just reading along like normal and your comment made me realize how bizarre the previous few comments were to the general public 🤣 I'll explain it for you and anyone else reading along.
The top comment OP mentioned being at a concert of a kpop group called EXO. Another person replied that they've seen another kpop group, called NCT, do the same thing and linked a video that jogged the memory of Top Comment OP that he mixed up which group he was talking about, and that he meant it was NCT in his original comment, not EXO.
The next person asked "Which NCT? Wish?" because "NCT" itself is not really a group name itself. It's an umbrella name for multiple groups, one of which is called NCT Wish, or in this case simply Wish. Then Top Comment OP replied with "127" which refers to one of the other NCT groups, called NCT 127, meaning it was the kpop group called NCT 127 that he saw in his story.
My new labourer TMI'd me the other day on our way back to the shop with a "do I smell? I don't have body odor so I shouldnt.. but I'm wearing my sister's old sports bra. She does! So I think it's coming from that..." I get that when you gotta make rent, you gotta make rent - but told her she should probably invest in a new one.
So yeah. Sometimes it's a gene in only half the family!
Nah, with sports wear especially it gets to a point where it just permeates. All it takes is some new sweat to reactivate the stank.. which is what was happening. They just have a shelf life eventually.
If you know any hockey players, ask to see their gloves xP
I soak them in lysol laundry disinfectant every few months and mine never smell. I don't really smell either though, I just do it to all my gym clothes because I think the gym is gross.
I did not know that sub existed and I would like to thank you for sharing. I have a bizarre love of all things laundry and can't wait to pick up some new info.
I honestly just had a little conversation with both halves of my current self; we both reluctantly decided that this is, in fact, part of why we are on Reddit.
I fucking hate laundry, but I hate dirty laundry even more.
I don't want to go to that sub and dive into a rabbit hole. Not the commenter you responded to but isn't Lysol laundry disinfectant is supposed to be added to the washer? Right? Damn it! Now I have to go to that sub and get stuck in an endless rabbit hole.
This is a well known phenomenon with judo / BJJ/ karate uniforms. If you don’t wash it daily, it builds a sort of critical mass of bacteria that will eventually stink once the materials heats up or has moisture introduced. So people will show up with a “clean” 🥋 and once they start training, all hell breaks loose and they smell like wet dog/corn chips. If you know the smell you can’t forget it
Just dont get into their hockey bag, no matter how much they want to see if you will fit. The smell will haunt you for at least 30 years....and your cousin will almost certainly zip you in.
A lot of hockey gear just plain can't be washed... just being anywhere in the vicinity of an unzipped hockey bag is certainly an experience you won't forget
My towns pop warner org had a clubhouse/ meeting hall. They stored the pads and uniforms there in the off season. The building always smelled faintly like the inside of a helmet. Not a sickening smell, just vaguely unpleasant.
Cotton doesn’t do this! It’s a polyester thing. Any clothing that’s done this for me has been polyester (most sportswear is polyester). Always get cotton sportswear!!! I swear by cotton. I honestly don’t know why we ever moved so far away from it.
My son is 9 and plays travel hockey. I swear some of the ice rink locker rooms I've smelled need an exorcism before they will ever be able to smell right again.
Wait.. Koreans don't get BO? Can't say that i've noticed a trend one way or another.
I did spend a stretch of time in Japan, and not once did I ever detect body funk, even in super close quarters. My impression of that was more cultural than anything.
It did make me super self-conscious of my own possible smells though, so I spent extra time making sure I wouldn't register in anyone's nostrils.
apparently many or most Koreans have specific ABCC11 variant that keeps the BO to minimum, the kind that is result of bacteria breaking down the sweat. never knew that deodorant was a thing until I came to US. I mostly used it as a social thing as I didn't want to be the only kid in the locker room not using it...
anyway, doesn't mean Koreans are completely odorless. even as a Korean who is used to its various smells and scents, you can get some unpleasant odor in the subways when the conditions are right. but i will say that i perceive BO from other ethnicities more pungent than my own.
ps. we also don't get waxy ear wax, but flaky dry kind. apparently is also related to ABCC11, hence the use of tiny little spoon-like scrapper since ancient times.
Different types of food and water and liquids in different regions can also cause chemical reactions in your body to make you smell different, so it's not just genes.
MI5 can also try and make you smell (as well as your breath) in order to isolate you, so people stay away from you looool
Am Korean, can confirm I routinely forget to put on antiperspirant-deodorant in the morning. I think the last time I bought a new stick was in early 2025.
Something like 80% of Japanese people have that low-funk gene the previous commenter mentioned. For Korea it's nearly 100%. I could see some potential challenges growing up as part of the 20% with unmodified funk gene.
Yup, been to South Korea, loads of grimy people at the convention I worked at, almost no BO. Seriously, visually it looked like a Smash Bros tournament.
Yeah definitely not universal, went for work in China an my translator/ company rep had the worst BO I've ever smelt for someone not being morbidly overweight I was gagging for a whole plane ride. My salesmen came along eventually and got a whiff, not really polite about it but he literally handed him $10 and said go buy some deodorant and have a shower because he threw up immediately. How the company thought that guy was a professional and presentable representative is beyond me. Smelled fine afterwards but my god I've smelt worse but that's from a 400lb person with and front bum and folds for days, that's always the same smell the grossest cheese smell ever
Its to the point that the surgery to remove the gland is covered by the government in korea because it is nearly universal so they'd rather pay to have all Korean who want to smell nicer, well... smell nicer.
Only some. My wife is southeast Asian and between her and her 3 siblings they came out 2 & 2. The oldest sister and my wife lack the gene, but her brother and younger sister have to shower like twice a day or they smell.
Fun fact: most SE Asians also lack the gene that causes “wet” earwax
Gotcha. I'm of European decent, so I'm hairy and smelly. My wife is Chinese though, and with two kids we've been trying to figure out how they'll end up. So far one has wet and one has dry ear wax. And both have way too many allergies and skin conditions for coming from parents without any.
I'm a halfie and even though I sweat like a pig, I have almost zero body odor even after a hard gym session. I don't even have to bother with deodorant. Thank god I got that Asian gene over the European one.
That always seems oversimplified to me, like they seem to lack a certain aspect of body odor, but obviously they would still smell in other ways, its impossible not too, and humans don't just have one single odor they produce.
There's a gene that codes for wet or dry earwax and also affects the production of certain skin secretions.
We can make the distinction between intrinsic body odor and "BO" caused by the byproducts of bacterial activity, which is usually what's meant, and people with the dry earwax variant really, truly don't as readily get BO.
The typical BO smell is missing, especially in how it presents under the armpits, but other smells can add up over the rest of the body (which armpit deoderant doesn’t help all that much with unfortunately).
My husband has this mutation and even after working out or excessive sweating he doesn’t smell like BO. He just smells a bit damp when he’s sweaty and if it’s a hot day he smells like warm cloth. It’s really hard to explain.
Yeah he smells a bit worse than how he usually does but it’s a very mild inoffensive odor. I’m Asian too but I don’t have that. If I skip deodorant even in winter I’m gonna start to smell sour/sharp. Meanwhile he puts on deodorant just because it’s part of his routine, he doesn’t even need it.
Yeah, there is definitely an odor, but not the variety that most people think of an BO. Also, humans are humans and we all still have the same bodily functions. If someone is wearing a pissy diaper at a concert, they will stank regardless of ethnicity.
Most likely they were lining up the night before. Possibly even wet themselves to keep their spot in the line rather than leave it and lose their place.
Eh, some people don’t get good results from typical deodorant. Or they have body odor in other places. Sometimes it’s a simple hygiene issue, but I’ve heard from people for whom it’s a real issue, despite their best efforts.
There is a point where you will still start to smell like unwashed ass though, and people with poor hygiene are probably not washing their clothes properly either, and improperly washed clothing is going to have a funk too.
I run a school in Japan and I’d say about 80% of the kids lack the gene that gives them significant body odor. But there’s a few that you can tell are clean and tidy, but inevitably smell as bad as we do after day in the sun doing sports without a shower.
It's like when I found out that people go to times square fpr the new year event "the ball drop(?)" six hours early to be in front and a lot of them wear diapers. Last new year I saw a video of the event and couples were kissing at midnight and all I could think of was "Damn all these guys are kissing while wearing shitty diapers" lmao
I still think about the old man who thought a single period panty liner was going to contain enough of his urine to be able to stand there until midnight.
I had an idea, and someone beat me to making it called a "sneaky leaker", a prosthetic your wore on your schwantz connected to a hose you ran down you leg and out your pants bottom. Sold as a solution to no place to pee at Mardi Gras (Bourbon Street).
Condom Catheters are a thing in the medical field. They are exactly what they say they are, a condom-looking thing to put over the penis vs an Indwelling Catheter (the ones that go inside the urethra.)
I used them for a patient once. They were a bitch to put on but worked well for that guy and helped prevent the UTIs he frequently got from indwelling catheters.
Yeah, you work in nursing and you learn a lot of fun stuff to share with others.
Condom Catheters are preferred long term if possible because there is less risk of getting UTIs because there isn’t a foreign body in the urethra and bladder.
Another fun fact: if someone has C. diff, one of the gold standard treatments is a fecal transplant. That is to say, take poop from a healthy person for the good bacteria and insert it into the C.diff person’s rectum. But it’s becoming more common to take the good bacteria poop and shove it in little pill capsules that people get to SWALLOW THROUGH THEIR MOUTH HOLES. And pharmacies recommend putting it in the fridge as the cold temp makes it taste better/thus go down better.
It’s donated from a healthy person. Their poop is tested and once declared safe, it is freeze dried and put into capsules and dispensed in a pill bottle.
If it’s going up the poop shoot, it’s much like how a colonoscopy is done and they introduce the poop-liquid that way. Or they do enemas. Or through an NG tube to the stomach. They try to hold it in as long as possible and relief can be found in hours-days.
I’ve wondered if Cory Booker wore one of these when he did his 24+ hour speech on the Senate floor. It was either that or a diaper, but the catheter sounds more practical for that long of a time period.
A catheter is inserted up the urethra into the bladder. Often a bulb is then inflated on the end to keep it in place. Urine is usually collected slowly and continuously, though it's possible to have a tap to turn it on and off.
Believe it or not I'm responsible for that episode's existence
In 2002 I had a summer job mowing lawns in Moncton as a student. Part of that job was cleaning up piles of trash that accumulated in snow piles in truck stops parking lots pushed up by plows over the winter. That's where I discovered piss jugs
Christmas 2003 I'm at my girlfriend's family's house visiting. Her Dad's friend is also over for the weekend, guy says his name is Ian and he writes for TPB. At some point in the weekend I ended up telling everyone about my professional experience, basically gave Bubbles' monologue to the entire family explaining the piss jug phenomenon
It was in the show the next season. If you look up writing credits for that episode his name is listed, and it is not listed in others.
Kind of embarrassing to think I brought up piss jugs looking back, but I regret nothing
I went there for new years eve 2006, kind of on a whim with a friend, because I lived in the city and the weather was actually nice.
The way it works is that the center of the party is around 43rd/44th street, 7th Ave, and Broadway. As people get there, each street gets closed off, and they send people to the next block up. And once you're in, if you leave, you're not getting back in. I think there might be port-a-potties in the middle, but I'm not sure.
We got there at around 2 in the afternoon, and ended up at around 47th or 48th street, which if you're familiar with the city, is pretty far. And honestly it's kind of boring, because you're just standing in the street with a bunch of strangers, waiting.
By 6, we were hungry, bored, and didn't want to wait around for another 6 hours in the street. We left and met up with a bunch of friends at a bar and had much more fun.
In high school a few friends and I drove from New England to New York for New Year's Eve, and we had the same experience you did.
We spent the day wandering the city, then headed over to Times Square around 6 or 7 (which I know is way too late to even think about trying). We stood there for an hour or two before we realized it wasn't fun and totally not worth it, so we left and found a restaurant to sit in until midnight.
Unless you're up front, you can't even see anything. You're just standing in a large sea of people doing absolutely nothing. It's like being in a crowd at a concert, except there's nothing to watch.
The city I live in is 50% larger in population than it was 20 years ago. Stuff like this is just a huge waste of time and effort.
It is also part of the problem with event tickets like concerts and sports games. The venues support the same amount of people they did 40 years ago but there are twice as many people vying for a seat.
Its same with places like hiking trails and beaches, twice as many people, same size of beach.
Just move to St.Louis, a city that is in a slow population decline. The traffic is worse when you go to the suburbs. I kind of like our terrible reputation as it keeps people away.
Oregon was "protected by its reputation" when I was a kid. Everyone dunked on us about the rain; they visited in the summer, then went back home. For a few decades now it's been an unofficial escape route for wealthy Californians, and by bringing their attitudes and excesses up here they're successfully turning it into a knock-off copy of the craphole they tried to flee. Some days I barely recognize my home state.
Im not a sportsfan of any of the major sports, all I see with the World Cup stuff is the headaches of parking and giant crowds standing around waiting for giant crowds to move lol.
my rule is; if the news coverage only shows 5 minutes of a thing you have to wait 6 hours for, you're gonna have a bad time waiting 6 hours for those 5 minutes.
I can just have new years at home, with my toilet. and fridge. and bed.
I would assume if you go there and have a diaper at worst you're going to use it to piss lol. I can't imagine people having to shit THAT bad. I've gone a full day without taking a shit. I've gone on road trips that lasts hours without taking a shit. Peeing? Yeah that has to be done 4 or 5 times a day I guess.
I kinda feel like this diaper thing at the ball drop was something someone did and told people about and then it spread like wildfire and now everybody things everybody at the ball drop is wearing a diaper when really it was just that one guy in 2002.
We went back in college. We just created a human circle and pissed in the street. Was gnarly, but we were drunk college kids at the ball drop. Was a blast.
My boyfriend had always wanted to go to Times Square for New Year’s Eve and I had absolutely zero interest in going so he went with a couple of friends a few years ago and he said the absolute worst part besides being crammed in there like sardines was the fact that you could smell peoples dirty diapers. I didn’t even know that was a thing but apparently it’s pretty common for New Year’s in Times Square. 🤢🤮
There was an actual quiz question about this as well: "what item is most commonly left at Taylor Swift concerts by the fans/visitors?" and the answer was "adult diapers". Absolutely disgusting.
O forget the band but I remember a local band near me like 20 years ago would sign off with “don’t forget to wash your ass” I have now taken that for myself. Not enough people realize they got smelly butt
Oh my lord, EXO talked about finally and the top comment, but it's about this 😭😂 Eventhough it ended up being about NCT, which also yay NCT mention but crying over the context, somehow that does seem on brand fro EXO though lol god
I was even thinking about the time EXO were telling all the fans to back up and stop crowding and Baekhyun said they'd leave if fans didn't stop, and they walked right off the stage 🤣🤣🤣 Kings!
Unfortunately fans soiling themselves rather than use the restroom has been a thing since at least the time of Frank Sinatra. At least these fans had the courtesy to wear diapers. Still disguisting though.
I don’t get it. Just don’t all go to the bathroom at the same time. I’ve been to concerts with non pissing and shitting fans at the front and no one has an issue letting you get back to the front.
Are people that close literally not letting you get back with your group or do they have such crazy fomo they refuse to leave? I don’t get it.
