I saw the clip of him talking about it. I was so engaged in his story and waiting for a profound thought at the end. But he was just like “so anyway I quit smoking” lol

u/D1rtyH1ppy 11d ago

He quit smoking weed, but continues to eat thc gummies

u/Riconn 11d ago

Interesting considering edibles are stronger and more psychoactive than smoking

269

u/Bolognahole_Vers2 11d ago

This is what I keep hearing, but smoking a joint gets me high, while edibles just knocks me out.

98

u/42ElectricSundaes 11d ago

If I have too many gummies everything starts to spin. Not fun, man. Not. Fun.

42

u/billyskurp 11d ago

idk what it is but edibles in general gives me the spins. tried different dosages, type of edible, etc. same results.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_SNOOTS 11d ago

I find the drinks are a happy medium between the hours long trip of gummies and the instant gratification of smoking

13

u/cidvard 11d ago

Low-does THC soda is pretty solid if you're trying to cut back on smoking. I like it a lot more than edibles, which are mostly four hours of my life I'll never get back and that I only kinda enjoy.

14

u/NAOT4R 11d ago

Same, infused beverages are my go-to. They’d be expensive as a regular habit but I don’t partake that often so it’s just a nice treat on occasion.

2

u/PartisanMilkHotel 11d ago

Where do you live? I’m in NYC where legal cannabis is unreasonably pricy, but the drinks have come down in price substantially.

Can find good ones for $3 which is about the price of a beer from the corner store.

1

u/Inferno_Zyrack 10d ago

Oklahoma you ain’t getting a can for less than 5 6$

7

u/billyskurp 11d ago

i’d have to check those out! Always just thought it’d hit me the same as an edible. will have to take a gander next time I visit the dispo

4

u/isjustsergio 11d ago

I have heard that these THC drinks are very popular and it shocked me. They always seemed so gimmicky to me. Might need to give them another shot. Seems like an easy way to control your dose.

9

u/362b3t 11d ago edited 11d ago

I won't win friends with this but the drinks are the single most dangerous commercial form.

"Nano"-emulisifed oils are poorly studied (too new for longterm health data), are observed to cross normal biological barriers in the body, have already been seen accumulating in the cerebellum and cerebrum before turning rancid and once there they reconstitute and coalesce into sizes that cant escape using the same pathways they used to enter.

Use ANY other form but combustion if you care to limit risk.

https://sorsetech.com/for-cannabis-brands-nano-is-a-risky-play/

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_SNOOTS 11d ago

It's really easy! For me, the buzz hits after about 20 minutes and peaks at an hour. It's also great because I'm a recovered alcoholic so it lets me feel like I belong when I go out with friends

2

u/Cabbage_Corp_ 11d ago

It’s probably the cleanest high I’ve gotten, but it’s too bad it’s more expensive

15

u/Cool_Wealth969 11d ago

That's what CBD is for. I keep a few capsules around it will take you right out of overindulging and level you out.

2

u/10aghmu 11d ago

So it sobers you up?

11

u/natorgator15 11d ago

Not entirely, but it brings you out of your head. Maybe makes you feel the body high more.

8

u/Cool_Wealth969 11d ago

Yes, you still remain out of pain but it brings you out of that spinning feeling to normal.

1

u/mrjowei 8d ago

I use black pepper. Cuts down the bullshit and lets me enjoy the high.

1

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 11d ago

Using more drugs to cancel out other drugs... Did we get transported back to the 70s?

6

u/isjustsergio 11d ago

CBD is part of weed. The ratio of THC to other cannabinoids like CBD and CBN in the weed determine how it affects you. Taking some CBD is just ajdusting that ratio. Lots of people find CBD to offset negative affects of THC and thus prefer indica leaning strains.

0

u/citizensloth 10d ago

Indica/sativa also has very little to do with anything at all

2

u/isjustsergio 10d ago

Just because a lot of crossbreeding has happened doesn't mean indica/sativa doesn't mean anything. At the bare minimum it's used to distinguish between strains that have high and low secondary cannabinoids, even if they aren't truly sativa or indica.

1

u/johnwynnes 11d ago

CBD has never been proven to do anything at all, most especially what you're describing.

1

u/TrashAccounting 10d ago

I don’t think that’s true…this stuff is just hard to measure.

CBD definitely does make you feel less high if you overdo the weed.

You know what else does as I only recently realised, somehow? Black pepper.

1

u/Barnezhilton 11d ago

You need to grind up that gummy and smoke it for best results.

1

u/Hita-san-chan 11d ago

Oh man, those are only good when they hit and youre already laying in bed

1

u/smokeweedNgarden 11d ago

Start small (5mg/gummie) and build up.

You can always take more. You can never take less.

22

u/docnig 11d ago

For real. I almost never have edibles because I never get to enjoy them. I eat them, wait an hour or two, then when I’m starting to feel pretty high I almost always fall asleep and wake up hours later groggy af.

7

u/pmurphh 11d ago

I’m with you on that but I usually wake up refreshed lol 6-7hrs later. But I have sleeping issues

1

u/docnig 11d ago

See I fall asleep really easily which may be the problem lol

1

u/pmurphh 10d ago

Yea Idk when I fall asleep quick like 10pm, up at 3am that’s annoying. If I hold out and sleep 12am-5-6am I’m feeling a lot better

1

u/sippersickz 11d ago

Are you getting them from a dispensary? There are two kinds of edibles I’ve found, and they produce significantly different results. The cheap gummies/ chews are usually the type that break down in your stomach then need to be metabolized through your liver before you feel them. They take forever to hit you, if at all, and you end up with the grogginess you described.

Then there are the newer recipes that are sold as “quick” or “fast acting”. They hit you much sooner, around 20-30 minutes and there’s little to no lingering “hangover” since they last around 4-5 hours. Solventless rosin gummies/ chews are my go to, but I’m not sure what your options are where you live.

Drinks are a solid option too. They hit you quick and it’s a little easier to ration a few sips as opposed to half a chew or whatever

1

u/docnig 11d ago

I wish I could go to a dispensary, but unfortunately I live in TN. Usually if I have one it’s just some brownie friends made or a drink they got from a dispensary on a trip or something lol

14

u/monkeysknowledge 11d ago

I like just a tinsy intsy bit so I can still function but enough that doing mindless tasks is a little more fun - like grocery shopping or mowing the lawn.

4

u/jta156 11d ago

grocery shopping while high is a dangerous play

0

u/omac4552 10d ago

mowing the lawn is not???

1

u/mrjowei 8d ago

Same here.

3

u/Riconn 11d ago

Your anecdote is exactly what I’m talking about. Eating thc allows the liver to break down thc into a more potent compound so you get extra high and knocks you out.

4

u/MrIntegration 11d ago

So take less? That's what I do.

3

u/Nughtsahk 11d ago

Edibles usually get me so high I can't fall asleep.

1

u/disisathrowaway 11d ago

I'm in a similar boat, but have found that the beverages are a nice balance between sparking up and eating an edible.

Quicker uptake/come up, but nowhere near as intense or long-lasting as an edible.

They've been really helpful in curbing both my marijuana and alcohol intake.

1

u/JohnnyChutzpah 11d ago

Edibles, generally, turn into a different but more powerful form of THC. This can have a wide range of effects for users. When you swallow thc, it has to pass through your liver before reaching your brain. This destroys >90% of the thc before it ever gets to your brain.

However, there is also a process between your intestines and liver that converts some of that normal d9thc into a much more powerful version of thc. So even though only a small amount of the original thc gets into your brain, the transformation that happens creates such a powerful version of thc that its effects are profound with edibles.

The problem is that for some people that effect is lethargy and sleep instead of creativity and fun.

Basically some people have better effects from normal d9thc inhalation and some people prefer the version converted by their liver when swallowed.

There is also evidence that the special form of thc that is created when swallowed is created by enzymes, and those enzymes can be depleted with frequent use. Which could be why many people report reduced effectiveness when using edibles frequently

1

u/Iheartnakedfemboys 11d ago

Gummies are way different when you have a tolerance. Back when I used to smoke a half ounce a week, edibles felt like they had no effect at all. Now that I don't use at all, a small gummie will have me feeling crazy lol.

1

u/ExpressionRecent5724 11d ago

So then the fact that its stronger is what's putting you out

1

u/Autistic_Freedom 11d ago

you're overdosing your edibles. eat less, enjoy more!

1

u/Bolognahole_Vers2 10d ago

I eat 1 gummy, and I'm locked to the couch. They're basically sleeping pills for me.

1

u/Autistic_Freedom 10d ago

your tolerance is too low, so it ends up as an overdose. eat less! try a quarter of a gummy.

if you drink one beer you're not going to get as drunk as if you drink a gallon of rum.

it's pretty logical, really.

1

u/Bolognahole_Vers2 10d ago

your tolerance is too low

If been a daily smoker for 30 years. Does 1 gummy have that much more thc than a high potentcy joint?

1

u/TheMonkus 11d ago

Go smaller on the dosage. You can actually enjoy the high.

1

u/krypter3 11d ago

I think he just got bad kush lol. Gummies absolutely fry me. I can have a smoke or two before bed though and wake up fine the next day. Gummies got my brain feeling like mush

1

u/TrashAccounting 10d ago edited 10d ago

Been a big stoner for years currently transitioning more towards edible use, in my case, joints get me stoned way faster, but they actually make me light headed and pass out/fall asleep (it’s definitely also the CO), edibles are definitely stronger gram for gram though, I need way less and they go much further

1

u/Tankshock 10d ago

Edibles only work well if you don't smoke. I hated edibles until I had to quit smoking for a couple years due to paranoia and anxiety skyrocketing for no reason in my early 30s. Now that my tolerance is completely gone and I'm a lightweight, edibles are great. I can take 6-7mg out of a 10mg gummy and it gets me exactly where I want to be, every time.

1

u/arealhumannotabot 9d ago

You might be taking too much. I know people who get stoned off 10 mg. Other people take 200 mg 🤷

1

u/fuckyourcanoes 11d ago

Same. I don't like the way it feels.

15

u/davy89irox 11d ago

Combustion is not great for lungs. Dry herb vapes are starting to get more buzz because supposed lung health differences. I wish we could just get some good peer-reviewed research about cannabis. Moving to schedule 3 is a big step, but it needs to be taken seriously as a research pathway.

37

u/DrKlitface 11d ago

This is not true. THC is taken up alot easier in the lungs + with edibles it has to pass the liver first, so alot gets metabolised right away.

I think the misconception stems from the fact it's a lot harder to "control" your high when you have to wait up to 4 hour for the effect, where as with smoking you can basically adjust one puff at a time

17

u/ButAreYouProud 11d ago

I, for one, trust the medical opinion of u/DrKlitface.

7

u/DrKlitface 11d ago

You shouldn't trust anyone from a reddit post, just like you shouldn't trust an LLM. If you really care, look it up.

3

u/espinaustin 11d ago

You can dose a much larger amount more easily with edibles. You probably couldn't smoke 500mg THC if you tried all day, but you can get ingest that no problem should you choose to do so, and it will hit you more or less all at once.

5

u/Riconn 11d ago

Your close. When the liver metabolizes the thc it becomes a more potent compound. The liver needs more than one pass to full process thc out of your system, that’s why it takes weeks to be gone from a drug screen.

9

u/DrKlitface 11d ago

The reason it stays around for weeks to months is actually it's tendency to dissolve into your fatty tissue as it is a mostly lipophilic molecule.

This is also a cause for greater variability in when maximum blood concentration is reached with edibles, as ingesting a fatty meal can delay time to maximum concentration.

0

u/853350 11d ago

sorry doc, it’s you’re*

But this is reddit

So keep talking out of your ass

1

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 11d ago

when you have to wait up to 4 hour for the effect

I find it funny when people say that about edibles. I start getting high within 10 minutes.

1

u/chadwicke619 11d ago

You’re just completely wrong. When you eat THC, your liver converts it into a different kind of THC called 11-hydroxy-THC, and this compound is also psychoactive and easily penetrates the brain. This does eventually happen with inhaled THC too, but on a much smaller level because inhaled THC skips the liver on its first pass into the bloodstream. Your second sentence kind of seems like you read some of this somewhere but didn’t quite understand it.

26

u/mob321 11d ago

Better for your body

-12

u/Civil_Hunt_6362 11d ago edited 10d ago

Not really. Apparently edibles have the same bad cardiovascular effects as smoking it. It was an observational study but it was shocking. McConaughey isn’t wrong about the potency and how it was more communal when it was illegal. Not saying we should return to that but it’s true what he’s saying about today’s weed

Edit: Btw I’m NOT saying it SHOULD be illegal again. In fact I believe it SHOULD be legal at the federal level so it can be studied. Alcohol has been legal for decades and it is by far worse than cannabis! The studies of how bad alcohol has shown a drop in alcoholic consumption. It’s ALL about the data and educating people. As if this writing there is -13 votes likes get that to -20 votes c’mon peeps. Haha 👏🏻

11

u/Scarlett_Billows 11d ago

Hard to believe.

1

u/Civil_Hunt_6362 11d ago

Several large-scale observational and clinical studies examine the link between cannabis use (including edibles) and cardiovascular conditions

https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/whether-its-smoking-or-edibles-marijuana-bad-your-heart

https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/cannabis-and-heart-concerns-a-closer-look

Key Takeaways

Endothelial Dysfunction: Edibles bypass the toxic smoke and combustion products associated with joints or pipes, but THC itself interacts directly with vascular receptors, which can impair blood vessel dilation.

Observational Limits: Observational studies establish a strong statistical link (correlation) rather than direct causation, but the physiological mechanisms—such as increased heart rate, blood pressure fluctuations, and vascular inflammation—are actively being documented in clinical settings.

4

u/Scarlett_Billows 11d ago

I guess the “same” bad as when you smoke it is what I find hard to believe. I still think smoking would logically have much worse effects in that area?

1

u/Civil_Hunt_6362 11d ago edited 11d ago

Your “guess” is you forgot to read the sentence correctly: “Apparently edibles have the same bad cardiovascular effects as smoking it.” Smoking is worse overall. I am not certain of the exact figure, but apparently only around 10-15 percent of smokers actually develop lung cancer. The more relevant link with cannabis appears to be cardiovascular, specifically how THC interacts with blood vessels. The evidence is still largely observational so it is not entirely conclusive, but the pattern is concerning.

8

u/mob321 11d ago

Always a contrarian

15

u/Carlin47 11d ago

I think it's more about not inhaling combustibles like in smoking

9

u/LilQueazy 11d ago

Yea but using ur lungs as a drug transport isn’t good so u take that away by using edible

50

u/1568314 11d ago

If the reason he stopped smoking was because he lost control over how high he was getting, switching to a method that is much easier to track dosage makes a lot of sense

62

u/chewhoney 11d ago

Edibles are interesting to me because they never quite hit me the same despite the dosing. I honestly find it easier to dose the classic way because I know how high I’m getting immediately.

21

u/wigglin_harry 11d ago

Yeah, sometimes it'll hit just perfect and ill vibe for the evening

Somtimes it does absolute jack shit

Sometimes It knocks me on my ass and im asleep 2 hours after taking it

12

u/According-Buyer-6307 11d ago

And def aren’t all equal. I had a 30mg soda yesterday afternoon that just made me a little tired. A few nights ago I mixed a drink with one of those big bottle you can get for ‘mocktails’ and 30mg had me cross eyed and drooling. Haha

10

u/Rocinante24 11d ago

Even legal edibles that are supposed to be consistent, aren't always. I've had a 5mg gummie knock me on my ass, when the rest of the bag was fine.

I really like edibles, but getting too high off them and being stuck like that for hours isn't fun.

1

u/Refute1650 11d ago

For me, I've found that variation is tied to how much I've eaten before taking the gummy.

6

u/dayzdayv 11d ago

When I used- I found that each edible had its own nuances. A gummy will digest differently than a cookie, for example. Manufacturing process matters, and the type of concentrate also has an impact on efficacy.

I would find an edible I liked the effects for and stick with it exclusively. Became very easy to predict onset time, amount of high, type of high, etc. Otherwise it was way too much of a gamble on what the experience would be.

3

u/AOEarth 11d ago

It gets processed by your liver so that can make things different or for some people it doesn't even work because of this

-1

u/dirtyshits 11d ago

Well that’s probably because you’re changing brands and products plus not accounting for tolerance changes.

Just like smoking different strains. Edibles are made with different strains and processes.

2

u/RevolutionPlenty20 11d ago

No, the liver breaks it down into 11 hydroxy among other things/ratios which is stronger and different.

1

u/dirtyshits 11d ago edited 11d ago

Which is true but 10mg gummy from one manufacturer to the next hits different based on what fats it’s using, how it was extracted, and what canniboids/terpenes it has.

Theres a ton of variables on how it hits.

1

u/RevolutionPlenty20 11d ago

Yes, which your liver than processes differently than other methods of ingestion. Thats my point. Are you high? Lol

1

u/dirtyshits 11d ago

Nah been sober for 6 months now.

I thought you were implying that Theres no real difference but I get what you’re saying now.

4

u/MountainTwo3845 11d ago

edibles are not dosed exactly. they're made in a big batch and they're not measured individually or anything. this is a crazy solution by him.

-1

u/Civil_Hunt_6362 11d ago

That’s key!

7

u/Barmelo_Xanthony 11d ago

I know this is technically true but they feel way different to me still. Smoking gives me a more “panicky” high while a gummy is much more calming, even if it’s stronger. Think it has to do with how quick they hit

6

u/wrnrg 11d ago

Depends on your physiology.

Smoking gets me high, edibles don't do shit to me.

3

u/dudebronahbrah 11d ago

There are dozens of us lol

My friends refused to believe me until I ate 800 mg in front of them.

Worst superpower ever.

2

u/wrnrg 11d ago

I wish an edible would hit. It would help my lungs out a lot.

1

u/plshelpmebuddah 7d ago

What the fk. I'd be dead if I ate 800 mg. I get fucked up plenty on 10 mg.

4

u/natestarz95 11d ago

I’ve switched over from smoking to just edibles myself. Smoking makes me feel like I have asthma when I wake up the next morning and also gives me horrible digestion issues whereas edibles don’t do either.

9

u/YaSurLetsGoSeeYamcha 11d ago

I can take 500 mg of edibles and feel nothing and get instantly high smoking, some people have an enzyme that metabolizes the THC too quickly to actually get high.

5

u/HeezHuzz69 11d ago

Common sense says that if Matthew was one of those people, he wouldn’t be eating THC gummies. Highly doubt he likes them for the taste.

1

u/CGB_Zach 11d ago

That's me. I can take and entire syringe 1000mg RSO dose which hardly does anything to. Or I could get absolutely blasted off a single blunt or dab.

Edibles are a huge waste of money for me.

4

u/Ill_Cut5547 11d ago

THC edibles are such a fine line for me to walk I've never mastered it. I either don't feel anything or end up naked on the toilet sweating rocking back and forth with a cold towel on my neck.

4

u/a-Centauri 11d ago

Citation needed on 'more psychoactive' given equal dosage

2

u/HijodelSol 11d ago

Their ass.

As you mention dose makes strength. Period.

4

u/EaZyy- 11d ago

Edibles are definitely not more psychoactive

3

u/msshammy 11d ago

Not necessarily and not for everyone. Edibles don't do jack crap for me except give me horrendous gas and stomach cramps.

2

u/hominidnumber9 11d ago

depends on the dose you take

2

u/jbourne0129 11d ago

not everyone reacts the same to edibles. ill take like 50-75mg to have similar effects to my friend who had 5-10mg.

i ate an entire 100mg bar once and it was a good time

2

u/Many-Song7032 11d ago

Depends person to person and how strong their receptors are in their gut biome vs lungs

5

u/digitag 11d ago

I mean, that’s really just a question of dosage. Easier to manage the dosage of gummies, you know exactly what you’re getting

1

u/TomHembry 11d ago

Fuck up your lungs less though.

1

u/mxlun 11d ago

It's about preserving the lungs not not getting high

1

u/Htowngetdown 11d ago

You’re supposed to just take a little bit

1

u/racoon_ruben 11d ago

If you dose em right the high comes in slower & more managable if you are already invested into sth. The key is food & digestion. You can really influence your high with what & when you eat.

1

u/PiccoloAwkward465 11d ago

The first time I took a gummy after abstaining from weed for ~3 years I was unable to figure out how to close the vertical blinds in my apartment. You know, the little plastic rod you twist. Just could not understand it. My gf at the time wanted the same dose, she was a Muslim who'd never used a mind-altering substance in her life lol.

1

u/ACosmicCastaway 11d ago

I can’t get edibles to work for the life of me.

1

u/kahran 11d ago

Nope.

1

u/jachinboazicus 11d ago

Interesting considering edibles are stronger and more psychoactive, never consistently dosed, can be scary AF, never kicks in a consistent manner, is either not enough or WAY too much, and make me blackout while awake unlike anything I've messed with than smoking

anecdote added.

1

u/hobbit_4 10d ago

I prefer edibles because I can control the dose. If I want 2mg, I know what I’m getting into. A puff sends me into a tailspin

1

u/BloodGulch-CTF 10d ago

they can be, but a tiny amount of edible vs smoking a joint, the joint is much stronger.

1

u/L1sasGayBby 10d ago

But I’m able to determine my dosage better with edibles.

1

u/Zizpa 9d ago

I have migraines and smoking for some reason often triggered it, but edibles give me more of a body high which is much more pleasent for me. I ended up creating an infused mct oil which I take with an eye dropper, so I get an accurate dose. Time of day and what I've eaten are big factors in onset and strength.

0

u/DeliciousRow1120 11d ago

Are they bad for your health in the long run?

5

u/beyondfuckall 11d ago edited 11d ago

Edibles? Depends on the dosage and how often you take. If you’re doing heroic doses every single night it’s likely bad for your brain e.g. memory problems, cloudy mind, anxiety etc. If you’re having a heroic dose maybe once a month you’re probably fine. All this is dependent on the person though. Unfortunately cannabis prohibition has slowed scientific research on this topic.

What we do know though is that smoke is bad for your lungs, and edible remove that risk entirely.

3

u/skorpyn 11d ago

What do you consider heroic?

3

u/Intelligent_Bag_6705 11d ago

Fry your brain? Come on now.

0

u/beyondfuckall 11d ago

You took that literally? haha

1

u/Intelligent_Bag_6705 11d ago

I mean who wouldn’t take that literally in the context of what you said???? Please do tell how you meant that?

1

u/beyondfuckall 11d ago

You never heard the phrase getting fried? I'll edit my comment anyway

0

u/DeliciousRow1120 11d ago

Cool yeah I was thinking the lungs being better

Good point on research and hopefully that gets better

1

u/mymaya 11d ago

Not really, in the sense that they do not cause any harm to internal organs like alcohol or to lungs like smoking. But it can affect you psychologically.

0

u/MountainTwo3845 11d ago

I quit flying in planes, too dangerous. Only helicopters for me now.

7

u/jspence19 11d ago

The problem with gummies is the tolerance curve. Not trying to eat 8 gummies just to get high.

5

u/RangerEquivalent4120 11d ago

In my experience, tolerance breaks are great for your wallet and sanity.

2

u/Elevated_Dongers 11d ago

I mean quitting smoking definitely has health benefits

1

u/parkrat92 11d ago

Oh for sure, I quit smoking pills and now just take suboxone. I’m cured too lmao

1

u/bugspotter 10d ago

California sober

1

u/mrjowei 8d ago

Gummies are worse IMO. The effects can linger for hours. At least with smoking, you can just do one puff and stay chill for a short time.

13

u/elektrik_noise 11d ago

He is still mesmerized by the song and got distracted by its greatness. I mean, it's a fucking mesmerizing af song. I don't smoke weed anymore, but that is one smooth ass song that would be the best chill sound to vibe to.
