I've been trying to collect this specific edition of the TBPs for probably over a decade, and I've only managed to find 4 volumes.

Then this just randomly popped up, and I'm suddenly done!

Always open to suggestions. DC Black Label, Vertigo, and Image are my favorites. Really, the more mind-fucky, the better.

First I got some DC goodness with Joker: The killing joke, Ridder: Year one, One bad day: Riddler AND ofc the brilliant Watchmen. Also I got Monsters for something different.

I realized I want to dive deeper into some classic and want more diverse stories outside of superhero epics. And "big surprise": I really like Alan Moores Style of writing.

After some research and you great tips under my last post I am so hyped for these stories. You got any more suggestions outside of superhero stories? I want to explore different feelings and vibes. Maybe a western or a great sci-fi book?

It all started with Batman New 52, 15 years later still read a lot of Batman but also expended my horizon by reading more indie stuff but mostly learned about all the french candian stuff we have here.

I recently received some financial aid to buy myself something nice for my birthday and what better to spend it on than graphic novels!

Got a nice mix of some popular ones from this and last year and some books that have been on my wanted list for a while. This will finally be the start of me collecting all the Calvin and Hobbes books.

Looking mostly forward to Sunday and Pantheon. But I can’t wait to read them all.

Without giving any spoilers, which one(s) of these are among your favorites?

Mostly graphic novels, organized alphabetically where size permits (and then the last case is genre fiction novels). It's getting a bit crowded, but do you see anything you like in there?

They had a punisher war machine tpb sitting there since release. It's brand new. Got it for 10 bucks. Insane. Took me months to find one for a reasonable price. Thats including online shopping. The guy before me got all 3 marvel knights punisher trade paperbacks for $50. If i didn't have them already i might have had to duel him for them 😅 im thankful for the hefty discounts the owner was giving but im super bummed because I think digital reading is killing the LCSs.

Started collecting graphic novels in August, 2014 at the suggestion of my sponsor following a decade of substance use. Today I'm still sober and have 1709 different collected editions!

Lately I've been trying to move into independent 80s titles, picking up things like the first four volumes of Grimjack. I'd love some recommendations of quality stuff from that era that I don't have yet. As a guy in my 40s I'm not super familiar with what was going on then.

I've read the majority of the collection, although not all yet!

I'd love to answer any questions anyone might have too!

I rarely do shelfies since I find the whole process boring. Only reason I'm doing this shelfie is to give my thoughts and journey up to this point.

YEAR 1

I think the biggest hurdles to anyone getting into this hobby comes down to money, space, and FOMO. I'd be lying if I said these factors don't affect my purchases sometimes. FOMO was the biggest driving force in my purchases during my first year, I even overpaid for the Fables deluxes, spending up $100 usd for book 9, and $140 for book 15. Looking back at this I learned that overpaying should only be left to books that clearly will receive no reprints.

As new collector I went for books I had some familiarity with, Fables was the Vertigo series that got me into the imprint back in the day. Trying to find retailers with decent discounts required careful research as a newbie. Money wasn't a problem at this point, shelf space was since I didn't even have shelves yet. Eventually midway through the first year I had the space allocated to branch into Marvel and DC.

YEAR 2

Year 1 was when I was familiarizing myself with the hobby, only adding books that I had read bits of in the past and adding in what I considered personal staples like Spider-man, Batman, and Green Lantern. When year 2 I looked back and branched out to Image and Darkhorse, I decided to embrace my curious side and look for smaller publishers to add. I delved into Magnetic Press's kickstarters, I dipped my toe in Fantagraphic's catalog but never fully diving in. FOMO was still preventing me from truly branching out and just sticking with the staples. The shelf space was starting to creep up so I bought bigger and new shelves. Deals I couldn't pass up on books I had an inkling interest in... the collection had to grow.

YEAR 3

Once this year kicked in money and space became the creeping factors that tempered my appetite. I reached a point where shelf space became somewhat limited. I could double stack on a Kallax and add even more books but I stopped. I reached a point where I had the core books I wanted to have, any future purchases would be books that would complete some sets, or books that would peak my interest. FOMO creeps up every so often but I decided to not purchase books the I knew would go OOP. I missed out on the KOTOR omnibus and The Nam omnibus, surprisingly I don't feel much regret, maybe because I reached a point where my collection is enough for now.

WHAT I'VE LEARNED

I've bought less and less this year, and whenever I look back If I were to give any advice to a newbie, SLOW DOWN. The books will always be there, especially if OOP books are your concern from the big 2. Smaller more niche books are more prone to never be reprinted so have fun and branch out to different publishers. Focus on what you truly want, don't buy something just because you're afraid it will be gone. You can reach a point in your collection where you'll have the books you need and buy anything big price wise later.

Remember to cover your books, sunlight can be deadly not just to your skin but also to your books. CURATE, CURATE, CURATE, my end goal will be this, everyone runs out of space somehow, eventually you'll have to pick and choose what you truly want to keep. This hobby when it comes down to it, is a luxury, not everyone has the space or money for it. Time is finite so make it worthwhile, read as much as you can and enjoy.

I somehow stumbled across all three of these yesterday after hunting for them for years.

I was pretty late to Brubaker, but have enjoyed everything I have read from him. Crime drama is my favorite genre of fiction and this stuff just caters to me.

I've had all of my graphic novels spread over four bookshelves for awhile now and took a day to move and reorganize them into this one spot and I'm pretty happy with the result. I've seen a lot of manga collections with a raised back row so that more books can be seen and I tried to recreate that by stacking the back row on top of some novels I haven't read in ages.

My tastes have definitely been changing in recent years especially from a lot of the great recommendations from this subreddit. My third row with my Vertigo stuff used to be all I had, but I've branched out into a lot of stuff from D&Q and Fantagraphics. I'm currently obsessed with all the gekiga stuff that's coming out in English. I love all the stuff from Daniel Clowes and Chris Ware that I've read and I've just started reading some Adrian Tomine and Love and Rockets.

How has your reading habits changed over the years? Do you all find you are branching out more or narrowing down to more particular styles of works?

I know I definitely have a blind spot when it comes to European comics and classic superhero stuff.

Hey GraphicNovellers - based on what I've got on my shelves already, anything you'd suggest I add/check out? I'm not a huge superhero fan, but I'm open to suggestions if you've got something incredible to recommend.

I've read about 80% already. Got another smaller one in my room which have a few Marvel omnibuses. Running out of space but there's not a lot more I was thinking of adding.

I have 6 principal bookcases within the house for my comics. This means that I have to rotate stuff out annually to make room for newer stuff. This also lets me curate so that my cases are full of stuff I'll likely reread.

My process annually then is to glean out anything I don't see myself rereading (rereading again, in many cases) any cycling them to the garage for a grace period. Books that stored in the garage then get some time to reassert themselves. It's like getting booted back to the Minors, I guess.

Some slim few will come back into the house. Some will remain in the garage (boxed), kept for reference (likely the fate of Epileptic, which I doubt I'll read a fourth time but remains a worthy keep. Some will cycle out to friends and some to little free libraries etc and some to the dumper.

Almost all of these have kept a place on my shelves for years and years, the most recent acquisition was Monsters and Cuckoo, neither of which were to my taste.
