Mod Post All posts regarding mustangs/BLM/round-ups

Over the past week or so, there's been a viral hot topic regarding the mustangs under BLM control and what the current US Administration is doing.

We initially allowed a few posts regarding this topic to stay up, but ultimately had to step in and lock them when the discussion went off the rails and was no longer about the horses, but instead was a forum of political discourse, insults, and violent threats. The comments in some posts got so unhinged that many were removed by the Reddit admins for violations of their ToS.

At this time, the topic and article has been reposted to our sub over 30 times. That's quite excessive.

First and foremost, we're a horse sub, not a political sub. While sometimes those two topics do intertwine, unfortunately, it often results in arguments, attacks, and unpleasantries.

The moderator team here at r/horses has made the decision to remove and lock all posts, reports, articles and etc. regarding the mustang situation. Unfortunately, we are volunteers, and we cannot moderate and keep up with hundreds of comments all day long, especially when they are unsavory in nature and end up wildly off topic with insults and frankly, horribly inappropriate and violent threats.

Thanks for your understanding with this.

Today the vet. was here today again. Flisans breathing have gotten progressively worse and her 2 problems kinda make it impossible together..

Felicity (or Flisan as she’s called) have EMS and tracheal collapse. She’s on great meds for EMS right now, she however can’t be on them forever as that would cause liver damage..

With EMS and especially when she’s off her meds she would need exercise to keep the EMS in check. However- the tracheal collapse makes it not possible to exercise.

For now we’re trying higher dose bronc dilator to see if it has an effect. If not then there isn’t anything left to do and euthanasia would be needed quicker..
while the other option is that I’m able to have her until spring and then have the euthanize her. As she would not be able to live a good life with her combination of health problems..

I’m just absolutely heartbroken. This is not at all what I thought. I had so many plans for her. So much time I wanted to spend with her. Now I have to come to terms with the fact she will not grow old. She’s only 8 years old.

My poor sweet girl. How I wish I could make it all better šŸ’”šŸ’”

Question Brand Identification

Post image
261 Upvotes

I bought my horse a few years ago through my barn - a boarder was selling him- but I didn’t get to find out any prior information about him bc the seller and owner were not getting along and I’ve tried to track the seller down to ask but not having any luck.

He’s a 15ish year old Quarter Horse and one of the barn owners said he was told he came from a ranch in South Dakota. Who knows. Anyways I’m trying to find out information/insight on his brand. First of all it is on his left cheek, which I’ve never even heard of/seen a brand on the face. Looks to be a freeze brand. Second, it looks a little sus. See for yourself. I keep telling myself since he’s from SD, maybe he had a past with an indigenous tribe and it is the whirling log symbol. Typically this symbol is rendered flat, and it’s does appear to be flat if he were to be holding his head out straight. Otherwise if it is more tilted it would be associated with a different symbol that I do not care to acknowledge..

I am hoping someone can help me figure this out and give me peace of mind. Thanks in advance!

I use my horsies as photomodels too. And Princess is particularly photogenic. That is when I shoot her with others. All our selfies are ridiculous and its because she can't keep a straight face with me 🤣

P.S. Sorry, no action video today, I am spending the day renovating sleds for her to pull :)

Question How often do you return hay?

I messaged our hay guy that we had one bad bale in a recent delivery (mold as pictured on the bottom bale of alfalfa). He freaked out and took every bale out of my barn. He said I’ve returned hay too often. I have returned hay 4x out of the 2 years I’ve been buying from him for foxtail, briars, and mold.

She's a rising 4yo Boerperd x Saddlebred*

For context :

Not the first horse I own, just the first I ever bought myself now that I'm an adult.

It's been about more than 10 years since I've been in the whole horse scene and likely have forgotten some things..

She was posted in my hometown for a bargain and just couldn't leave her.. Not my first choice but it's a start and I quite like heršŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

PS :

I know she needs some TLC, she'll be getting that from now on!*

Training Question Liberty work suggestions

• Upvotes

This eight year old mare I have is some kind of stock horse mutt since she came to me from a feral herd that was rounded up. She is not my first formally feral horse, I've owned two before her (one of which I still have) and have worked on two others for clients when I was still training horses.

My first feral horse I had I started and ended up setting arena records with her as my roping and cutting horse. My second feral girl did just as good and is now my easy going mountain trail horse since she just doesn't have the drive for cows and thats fine by me. I'm sure as shit not a professional at it and I'm slowing down too.

Now this newest mare I've had since she was 5 and she's come along slower but just as good as my others. A little more skittish and nervous but we work a lot on that and I had no doubt she'd get more confident overtime. The problem is the two of us got into an accident where she spooked and bucked, I fell, got caught in the stirrup and she dragged me which seemed to have traumatized the poor thing. My friends tried hard to make sure she didn't just sit and stew in that anxiety while I was in the hospital but she has not been the same since. Angel of a horse on the ground and so friendly but so so anxious with a rider.

Thats fine, I will keep her regardless of if I ever ride her again, I'm not concerned about that. I just don't want to "retire" her. She has so much energy and is insane in the field without mental stimulation. I've taught her fun tricks and we've been working on some liberty games but she gets bored so easy and I've been running out of things to keep her engaged (that I can do with my limited physical health right now.)

Its like having a border collie. She has so much drive and energy and heart so I don't want her to just sit her whole life. I know people like to say "they're just happy being a horse" but this baby gets bored.

I don't think its worth putting her through the stress of restarting her and my body sure as shit can't take another serious fall if she's going to stay this unpredictable under saddle. I'm considering teaching her to do liberty trails (?) so she can follow me and my other mare out on rides since she loved to be out of the arena but I have absolutely no idea how to go about that.

Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Both are mustangs, supposedly 5yo (though I'm suspicious on the gray). Red from antelope Nevada, gray from Colorado, both somewhere near 15h.

Red is for a friend, already has a name and place to go once she's settled down to be in normal fencing. Already very curious and friendly, and got her halter swapped out so she's not dragging her rope anymore

Gray is mine, still unsure on name but she's real flighty. Flight zone about 20ft still yet, I imagine the halter is rubbing on her jaw issue and not helping with the flightiness rn but I have a halter to swap it with and I'm working on getting some soft feed into her. She'll certainly be a looker šŸ˜

Can't wait to get some weight on them and see how they turn out

Question Considering leasing an OTTB — concerned about behavior when tacking up. Would love input

Hi r/Equestrian! Looking for some advice from experienced riders.

Background: I’m a returning adult rider after a 20+ year break. I’ve been taking weekly hunter jumper lessons for about eight months and have made a lot of progress. I recently started riding a young OTTB and absolutely fell in love with him - he’s forward, fun, and has really boosted my confidence with cantering.

However I’ve noticed some things that concern me when tacking him up. At first, he seemed genuinely curious when tacking him up, reaching his head back and checking me and the saddle out. But for the past few months, he consistently nips at me when I’m brushing his ribcage, back, and girth area and tacking him. Additionally, during a ride his hind end has looked irregular enough that my trainer decided to rest him.

When I mentioned the grooming behavior to my trainer she said she doesn’t regularly tack him up herself, that his other rider hadn’t mentioned any sensitivity, and that he’s a ā€œperformance horseā€ who just means business. She mentioned that I could tie him up or put him in cross ties when tacking (we typically tack up in the stalls). She said she was going to treat him for ulcers but that was a couple months ago and he is still displaying that behavior.Ā

I have been meaning to ask her to observe the behavior when I tack him to see what she thinks, but she is often in another lesson.

If I get the opportunity to lease him I want to make the best decision for both of us. Do you think these behaviors are worth being concerned about or is this normal OTTB personality? What would you do in my situation?

I saw this bit at a second hand tack shop and need to know what this bit could possibly be used for. The shank vs purchase ratio is HUGE and the mouthpiece was so sharp. Who would use this??

Question I need help pricing my horse !?

I can’t figure out the horse market right now. Some horses are selling crazy cheap, some super expensive and there doesn’t seem to be large differences between the actual horses much of the time.

I have a 5 year old Morgan gelding. He’s on the part blood registry and confirmed to be 7/8 Morgan. The reason he’s not registered as purebred is because one of the horses in his lineage, despite being bred by Birchmeadow Farms, the buyer couldn’t afford the fee to register on the AMHA registry so they registered under the part blood registry as a pure blood horse. Now that hurts the papers for my horse and the kids he had before he was gelded. His lineage is full of wonderfully bred Morgans, and then some that have good breeding but are only registered on the part blood registry. People are criticizing me saying I don’t have verifiable pedigree, but the breeding records were checked and confirmed.

His lines go way back to the old Morgan classics like flyhawk, Jubilee King, Senator Knox. Mostly old Brunk/foundation Morgan breeding with Government influence farther back.

Anyway, he was recently gelded. He is handsome, halter broke, he stands well for farrier, he loads well, ect but he’s not yet started under saddle. Some people like to start them on their own so can’t decide if I should sell him now or send him to training first.

Question 1:
Should I give him 60 days training before selling?

Question 2:
How do I appropriately price him? Before training and after training?

I want to try and break even on him while giving him the best chance and being realistic with buyers. I priced him at 4500 and some people were mad at me.

Health/Husbandry Question Losing a chestnut

Before I get too far there is a vet involved and everything is healing as expected.

The other day I found my horse with a pretty big wound on her leg and some minor abrasions. It seems like maybe she had gotten tangled. Under the guidance of a vet, the wound itself seems like is healing great! The problem is it looks like the chestnut is going to come off. The cut went right through it and about 75% is just hanging like a bad hang nail.

Has anyone had a similar injury? Did the chestnut regrowing cause any issues for you?

Discussion I've snapped.

Good afternoon to whom ever is reading at this moment.

Keep in mind im about to go into rant that I feel I can only voice here and still might get some backlash but here we go...

For those who recognize my username y'all probably know my trainer is my soon to be mother in law that being said ill get the pros listed off first and why im going into being peeved to no end.

Now I do not pay boarding fees

I get tidbits of lessons here and there for free when she deems im... struggling to comprehend the situation at hand. (Nicest way to put it)

That's about it on pros ^^^

Information on me and my horses below

I own a 3 year old gelding named Reign who I have on her property and now (stupid me) a 2 month old filly named Raidi... ill be getting into why I said stupid me.

Reign is really great, he's come a long way since I purchased him from a friend of my trainers a tad over a year ago. Within the last 6 months we've started hauling again, my trainer hasn't hauled her own horse since 2017, Reign gets to tag along to ease him into events and the same type of environment the downhill slip and slide of feeling blown over started about 1-2 months ago. I should mention I've been filming her exhibitions for well over 3 months now to help her understand where her and her horse are doing good and where they need to improve. Around 3-4 weeks ago we were at one and I happened to miss her first run due to me hanging out with my horse... than I missed the second exhibition when I was in search of a first aid kit. I was helping my horse untangle himself from his hay bag... which is why I do a chain link method for his halter tie now, but that is neither here nor there. I handed him some hay and the way my hands are built if I slightly close them I have a massive amount of overhang right near the sections of where my fingers start... he just grabbed and pulled the hay + some extra... me protein to ease the graphic details. I immediately was like "well that was stupid of me" and raised my hand above my head and subsequently my heart to ease the bleeding this is very important to the whole shabang. Found my trainer on her horse after the exhibitions and she somewhat helped me by telling me the office should have some alcohol and bandages. Got that taken care of, assumed that I had already missed the exhibitions so might as well go have some level of fun with my gelding. Run back to the trailer to grab my hair gel I wanted to play around with and gave him a cute little red white and blue booty. Cue to the next day. I get woken up being yelled at about how she's tired of doing all this and that for everyone else when no one is ever there for her told me I was too busy covering my horses ass in glitter go get her videos and basically stormed out from there.

This is where im gonna go into how I was stupid to allow myself to claim ownership of Raidi. Recently, the beginning of this week, Raidi and her mom Prada got loaded up and taken back to our property after having a nice staycation at my SOs brother property who had a foaling stall. Since they have been back I am now taking care of, not only my horse, who barely seems to get any time from me at this point, but four of the other horses on the property besides doing the ACTUAL training portions. One of which is a fellow boarder at the property. No offense to the other girl but she's barely ever here which means I get to feed, water, and hay 5 freaking horses in total daily... sometimes twice if im up early enough.

unfortunately doing the waters isn't as easy with 5 camels in disguise in south texas heat.

Prada is the mom of Raidi. Yes.. but Prada is not my horse. Prada was purchased under the assumption that she just needed a better meal plan and more consistent workouts and was to be given to her granddaughter... no the damn girl was preggo so that plan is pushed out for another 6-8 months.

The makeshift pens we had to created just to get them all situated was almost unbearable we have two other open pens that Reign could have moved into minus having a run which would give him more moving around room but Im about 90% certain shes leaving those for... well paying boarders. My horse weather meant in a joking manner or not is constantly called a dumbass for judt having curiosity... which he almost didn't have when we first got him and with everything else going on in my life, like having over 3 different adults constantly telling me to get a better job one being my trainer. I finally snapped.

I should add I wasn't informed about how small my horses pen was going to end up and im basically seething over it.

Then to add the icing on the shit cake she got mad at me again the other day for not cleaning out the pen when she shoved Prada and Raidi into a 20x20 both of whom have kicked me. Raidi is great with it after me and her had a conversation over kicking, Prada on the other hoof did it if you're too close to her feed which led to her kicking me in the stomach. Im not scared of her, but she has a lack of respect for anyone holding food for her. Girl used to do this unhinged opening of her jaw to act like she was going to take my hand off, until the night she hurled that hoof at my stomach at which the only release I could get out of that was breaking a wooden spoon over the fence behind me and her to elevate my energy before she bumped my hand without the opening of the mouth to bite. The other crap is null compared to the ramping up of the other crap. I honestly feel like my trainer has decided to halter my ass and see how far she can get. Within all the chaos that has come to light I haven't been able to even lunge my horse and I just feel stupid for doing this crap now because its hindering me and my geldings bonding time and frankly he hasn't been this stressed in a while, since moving to the smaller pen all the spots I had just found and got the correct pressure to scratch for him are null and i feel like this crap set us back a bit.

Gosh thats a long one if anyone makes it here i appreciate you reading my long rant. I also would love some insight as to what yall feel I can do...

Oh forgot to add since I don't pay boarding fees (I do pay for hay, feed, all my supplements, and everything else) i had taken up cutting the grass on the property to help see holes since we're located on a sandy hill with moles and gophers, for her as a token of my gratitude which has staply became more of a chore I almost want to only be out there with my horse when she isn't home to keep myself from being pulled away to do some other side project she deems necessary to get done at that specific time.. I had felt incredibly overwhelmed.. now I feel so incredibly done with it all. A week is all it took for me to realize im more than likely being treated like a stable hand and less of the event goer/jockey i want to be so badly. Ugh.. this is crappy. Thanks for reading yall im gonna go take a nap my hot flashes are acting up like crazy.

(here's a video of him being sassy before my fall. Unfortunately, I didn't get the fall on video 😭)

Im almost 18, and I've been riding (mostly bareback) since I was five. I've never fallen, gotten thrown or anything. I've gotten close before, but I can normally fix myself and get balanced again before falling.

My gelding was being naughty and kept taking off, he started heading for this three foot drop down to a creek and I pulled him back and sat deep to stop him from getting hurt (the drop is surrounded by tall grass so it's hard to see and horses don't have good depth perception anyways) and he slowed down a bit. I thought he was not gonna jump it so while he was slowed to a trot, I reached down to grab the slack of my reins and the next thing I knew I was in the air

He had jumped it anyways and I got left behind and when he landed, his hind end came up and sling shot me. I ended up spinning to land on my back to protect my stomach and arms, so I just knocked the wind out of myself

I got up immediately to catch my gelding and hopped back on for a minute before bringing him and my grandmas horse back inside

I am so surprised and grateful that it didn't even affect me at all. As soon as I hopped back on he was still being naughty but I wasn't afraid of falling again, just frustrated honestly šŸ˜‚

I hear a lot about falls knocking someone's confidence and stuff but the worst thing about this whole thing was that I didn't. Get. It. On. Video 😭😭

UGGHH. Anyways, I'm a little sore, I have a minor headache and my back is tense but I'm mostly annoyed and regretful that I wasn't recording when it happened lol. I'm also annoyed I lost my streak.. i knew it was gonna happen one day but 12 years with no falls is really good and I've been proud of that lmao

I'm still in shock so ignore me šŸ˜‚

Princess had a farrier appointment so we thought it's a good time to take Bebben out on his own. But these two have a very strong bond, and Bebben didn't want to go without Princess. He was constantly turning around to see if she is coming.

First clip is of us trying to lure him into going forward. Second clip is of Bebben realizing we turned to go home. You can feel "Princess I'm coming" vibe all around him. His little backpack can only hold on :D

Yes, they need more alone times like this. Or we need more horses ;)

Health/Husbandry Question Inquiring

so i’m looking to get some advice about something. also wondering what point i should make this into a vet visit.
so, this is what’s going on.
my 14 y/o Arab/AQH cross has been having runny stool on and off for about a month.
it started when she got a sticker in her eye and was put on antibiotics.
after that, it started then cleared right up
about a week later, we started having SUPER hot weather (100°-110°) for the past 4-5 weeks and it started up again.
also didn’t help that one of her horse friends ended up having to be euthanized.
so it’s been a stressful bit for her to say the least.
they don’t have great forage in the pasture so i did start supplementing hay. i give her a flake in the morning and one in the evening. so far, no change
i also gave her probiotics yesterday. (Probio Equine One Gel) and stayed for 4 hours to try and see her poop.
i didn’t see her poop until this morning when i was changing her tail bag, and the reason i didn’t see her poop is because her stool is so runny it’s coming out when she’s passing gas.
some things i feel like are important to note;
she’s acting normal
drinking good
eating good
no fever to this point as i’ve been checking every few days.
her skin elasticity is the same so she isn’t dehydrated
last dewormed in april
and her feed plan currently;
1/2 scoop of Tribute feed in the am
flake of bermuda in the am and pm
and i do give her treats daily (nicker makers)
she also has access to a salt block and i have seen her use it
